    Dinner!

    Another evening. Another dinner. Two types of pate and crackers to start. Main course was turkey steak marinated in chilli and garlic, courtesy of Mr Sainsbury. Also pork sausages. Accompanied by Mr Ben microwaveable rice. Good but not as great as last night’s dinner. And now to follow, will it be three types of cheese and crackers or a Mr Kipling pudding and Ambrosia custard?🤔Les mer

    Coldingham to Eyemouth

    Early morning sun and an early breakfast al fresco and then we were off on our walk. We walked down to Coldingham Bay and then turned right in the direction of Eyemouth. Although only a three - four mile walk mainly on the top of the headlands, with wonderful coastal views all the way back to St. Abb’s Head, it does however involve two steep downs and two steep ups with a bit of scrambling. All evidenced by Margaret’s FitBit which calculated we did 12,600 steps and 41 elevations!

    It took the best part of three hours and rather than walking back, we took the easy option of the 15 minute bus journey from Eyemouth to Coldingham and the bus dropped us right outside the campsite. Of course, we could not use our bus-passes as we are in Scotland! We did not go all the way into Eyemouth as we know from previous experience that it is an unprepossessing place.
    It is still a working harbour but could be much nicer, maybe with a couple of seafood eateries. However, it is just long refrigerated container lorries of whatever seafood has been caught waiting to be shipped out to France and Spain!

    We were back at the campsite to enjoy our tuna sandwiches for lunch. There has been no breeze today and this morning was warm and sunny - perfect walking weather. This afternoon has been dull and cloudy but still pleasant.

    There is another gourmet meal being planned followed by Round 4 of the Great Scrabble Competition. Come back later and experience with us some culinary delights!    Les mer

    We left you on a cliff-hanger earlier not letting you know what the gourmet dinner was!! We had BBQ prawns to start cooked in their shells served with lemon wedges. Delicious! The main course was lamb steaks marinaded in rosemary and olive oil, cooked on the BBQ and served with roasted peppers, tomato, feta cheese and pitta breads. We certainly don’t slum it when we are camping!Les mer

    North Berwick to Coldingham Bay

    Awake early with the dawn chorus of wood pigeons and a blustery breeze but it was sunny. After an early breakfast, we left North Berwick and drove west to Guillane and Aberlady with fine views north to Edinburgh. We drove for a bit down the A1 and then turned off to Coldingham. It wasn’t a road we had been on before but Sabine, our SatNav directed us that way and it was fantastic. Elevated views in front of us all the way. We arrived at 10.30 at the campsite at Coldingham and fortunately were allowed to get on site and set-up. Then we headed off to walk via Coldingham to St. Abb’s Harbour. Warm sunshine but breezy and we sat on one of our favourite benches overlooking the harbour and enjoying our packed lunch. Then back to Coldingham and a restful afternoon. Margaret read her novel while Peter prepared a gourmet meal. More of that to follow!Les mer

    North Berwick

    Second attempt at sending this message! This morning we walked from the campsite into North Berwick, a walk of about one and a half hours. We took a different route from this time last year and walked along a small part of the John Muir Way rather than along the beach. We followed the path inland but parallel with the sea. We walked into North Berwick along a wonderful road with interesting and large and even larger houses. We then skirted around a golf course and then into the town of North Berwick. We enjoyed tea and shared a scone at the Sea Life centre, sitting outside, enjoying the scenery. We then split up for a while and met at an Italian Restaurant where they serve Italian “tapas”. We had been there once last year and then again on a second occasion with Isabel. The food was wonderful, staff attentive and all Covid regulations in place. Great! Then it was a taxi ride back to the campsite. This evening , continuing with the Italian theme, we are having Insalata Tricolore. The wind has now got up so we are sitting inside Wolfgang but can’t complain as the weather today has been glorious!Les mer

    North Berwick

    Here we are on a campsite close to North Berwick. We camped here for a few nights last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a two hour journey from Seahouses this morning and the weather was better than what had been forecast. We set up camp just after 12 noon. This afternoon we enjoyed a walk along the beach. Weather is warm but breezy. We enjoyed pasta puttanesca for dinner and now the great Scrabble challenge is about to commence. We have cheese and crackers and red wine at the ready to fortify us!Les mer

    Getting ready for another adventure. No big safari to Scotland this September. Due to Covid, although many sites have re-opened, the number of people on sites has been restricted. Therefore, there are not so many pitches available. In addition, not all of the campsites have opened their shower and toilet facilities. As we are not totally self-sufficient on Wolfgang this is a major factor. Lots of preparation today at Seahouses in glorious sunny, windy weather!Les mer

    This is the final blog entry for this trip. We are now in sunny Seahouses, we have dried-out, the laundry has been done and Wolfgang has been cleaned both inside and out.
    We had an amazing Scottish Safari covering about 1000 miles over 12 nights in 7 campsites. We were on 5 ferries, visited 2 peninsulas and 5 isles.
    Despite the weather (and it wasn’t all bad), we had a wonderful journey. The Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries were great, the campsite locations were amazing offering us spectacular views. The food was none too shabby and our accommodation in Wolfgang was snug and comfortable!

    Some of the highlights were, in no particular order:

    Tea and crumpets in the sunshine in Oban
    Our seafood lunch in Oban
    The fish lady and her van at Carradale Bay Campsite
    Tea at Ardnamurchan Visitor Centre with spectacular views
    Lunch at The Old School Restaurant in Dunvegan
    Driving along and listening to a CD we purchased at Ardnamurchan Visitor Centre: “Flowers of Scotland - beautiful Scottish melodies by some of our finest female voices”
    Spectacular views of lochs, mountains, glens and rivers - too many to mention.

    Thank you for following us on our journey. We have awarded points for the most “likes” and the most “comments” and we all know what points mean. Points mean PRIZES! We are pleased to announce that the winner is ...... Alistair Guthrie. Keep watch for the postman, Alistair who will be delivering that special prize. We are sorry that there can only be one winner but “likes” and “comments” from all of you were appreciated.     A blustery, windy, showery night with winds from the North West forecasted to be between 50-60 mph. We decided on advice from the Camp Warden to put down Wolfgang’s elevated roof which meant Peter had to slum it downstairs overnight with Margaret, rather than being in his penthouse apartment with the triple-aspect windows. It was a wise move! We woke to wet, windy conditions so decided to breakfast quickly on some of Margaret’s excellent tea-loaf, made at home before setting out on our adventure. Just like the flapjacks, it is keeping incredibly well. We then packed up and left quickly. We drove through torrential rain and blustery winds, 50 miles to the Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. Fortunately the Bridge was open as it can sometimes be closed due to high winds. We drove a further 100 miles to Fort William and it took three and a half hours. It was a miserable slow drive. If the weather had been better, we are sure the scenery would have been spectacular with plenty of glens, mountains, lochs and rivers. We battled through heavy traffic in Fortwilliam and decided to quit and camp overnight at a Club site, Bunree just south of Fort William. It is a very nice terraced site with apparently spectacular views across Loch Linnhe on one side and up to Ben Nevis on the other. We have opted not to take the cable-car up Ben Nevis! We fortunately set up in the dry but the rain soon started with a vengeance. However, we are warm and snug inside Wolfgang. We have spent the afternoon posting these blog entries as we have had no internet connection for the past few days. Peter has planned the route for tomorrow when we will head to Seahouses and Willerby, our static caravan. A couple of pictures are attached. One taken from the rear window of the van and through the bicycle rack and another of Margaret when she returned from a trip to the facilities! Isn’t camping just wonderful?Les mer

    Our first night at Edinbane was dry with no wind and we woke to a bright morning with intermittent blue skies, white clouds and warm sunshine. We decided to drive to Dunvegan via the Watternish peninsula which was a three mile drive of very scenic views, nice little villages, art studios and a quirky cafe in a Yurt! We drove back up the peninsula to Dunvegan, not quite what we had expected and although overlooking an estuary, there was no real harbour. We then headed to The Old School Restaurant which had been recommended by Sarah and Andrew as they had enjoyed a meal there a couple of years ago. We enjoyed a light lunch with Peter choosing a salad of local blue cheese, caramelised walnuts, salad leaves, pear, apple and grapes with a yogurt dressing. Margaret enjoyed Cullen skink which she had been longing for throughout the holiday! We drove back to Edinbane, still in good weather and enjoyed a BBQ dinner, similar to the previous evening. We finished watching “Rebecca” on our portable DVD player and battened down the hatches for a stormy night!Les mer

    Although we thought we had left early enough, it took us one and three quarter hours to drive the 40 miles from Resipole campsite, on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula to Mallaig and we nearly missed the ferry to Armadale on Skye. However, two pleasant Calmac Ferry operators kindly allowed us on at the last minute. It was a very short crossing of about 20 minutes, just enough time to enjoy cups of tea on board and two of Margaret’s excellent flapjacks - made at home - and they are keeping remarkably well! The weather was much brighter over Skye then the mainland and indeed we drove the 50 or so miles from Armadale to Edinbane in warm sunshine and enjoyed lovely views of the mountains, lochs and harbours. We stopped at Broadford where there was a Co-Op petrol station which enabled Wolfgang to be filled with diesel. The Co-Op store itself was large and we stocked up on some basics as well as some impulse buys. We loved the location of Edinbane campsite mid-way between Portree and Dunvegan overlooking the sea loch. Friendly helpful staff and although the site was busy, we managed to book in for two nights. Very good facilities. There were lots of other VW campervans on site - the most we have seen anywhere. We enjoyed a BBQ from purchases made at the Co-Op of langoustines followed by pork kebabs in a maple syrup marinade and garlic and lemon chicken. Served with Mediterranean couscous. We followed that with local cheese and crackers. None too shabby!Les mer

    We were awake early and packed up, drove to Oban for the 11am ferry to the Isle of Mull. A journey of about 45 minutes. It was a small ferry carrying about 25 cars, drivers and passengers and also foot passengers. Spectacular views the whole way. We then drove from Craignure, west and south-west almost to the furthest point west , where the ferry leaves for Iona. Unfortunately the weather deteriorated so we drove east and north on a scenic but challenging route to Salen. The scenery was spectacular following the shores of various lochs. Single-track road but with plenty of passing places. We arrived at the campsite which is right next to the ferry terminal. Once again, lovely views from our pitch. Again we were fortunate in being able to set up in the dry! We then prepared dinner for tonight while the weather was still dry.

    “Across the Ardnamurchan Peninsula to Resipole on Loch Sunart”.

    A short drive of about 25 miles so Salen and Resipole. Single track road all the way but very scenic, wild, landscape of glens, lochs and vistas. We drove across the Ardnamurchan Estate, a landscape of forestry, sheep, cattle, deer, birds, otters and other wildlife. It was a dry, bright warm morning and we stopped at the Ardnamurchan Visitor tea for cups of tea and a bit of retail therapy. Wonderful views across Loch Sunart. We arrived at Resipole campsite in warm sunshine by the shores of Loch Sunart. Very scenic setting on flat ground with all pitches overlooking the Loch and the mountains above it. We spent a house-keeping afternoon doing our laundry in the very good launderette on site. The weather then deteriorated and we had strong gusty winds and heavy, squally showers. Dinner consisted of sausage casserole made at home, and in Wolfgang’s small freezer. We added some black-eyed beans - accompanied by sour-dough bread which we had bought in Tobermory. We enjoyed a Mr Kipling sponge pudding and custard while we finished watching “The Devil wears Pravda” on our portable DVD player. We had a very stormy night and lots of rain!
    We have decided that despite the inclement weather we will press on with our Scottish Safari and head to Skye on Thursday 12th. We have decided to “skip” Harris and Lewis on this occasion - partly due to the weather but also due to the times of the ferry crossings.

    Today - Wednesday 11th - we woke to a bright but breezy morning, following a night of heavy rain and winds. We have enjoyed an “At Van” day, updating this blog, taking inventory of our food cupboards and planning the next few nights dinners. We have looked on the web at campsites and planned the next part of our journey.    Les mer

    We had showers during the night and low cloud enveloped the Shieling campsite at Craignure. Everything was rather muddy and wet. Full wet-weather gear was needed to get from Wolfgang to the facilities in order to get washed and dressed. However the weather improved by the time we left the campsite to drive the 25 miles or so north to the capital of Mull, Tobermory described as a pretty, thriving colourful harbour and town. Indeed it was, making a bright splash of colour on a grey day! We spent an hour or so in Tobermory which included a visit to the weekly “local producers’” market where we bought some very tasty cheddar cheese. We caught the 1pm ferry to Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Once there, we drove to the Lighthouse, the most westerly point on the UK mainland. It was a six mile winding drive on a single track road but once again, there were plenty of passing places. It is not a particularly attractive Lighthouse, we had hoped for white with red stripes but it was a dull grey! We wound our way back to the Ardnamurchan campsite and Wolfgang’s good friend Sabine guided us there perfectly! The site was muddy but the weather cleared and we enjoyed cooking and eating outside overlooking the sea and the Isle of Mull’s mountains scenery. Dinner was salmon pakoras which you may have remembered we bought from the fish-van last week at Carradale Bay. We then cooked a tasty campsite dinner of tuna, olives, tomato and pasta. Many thanks to Sarah for buying us “The Hungry Camper Cookbook”. In answer to one of Alistair’s questions, the purple utensil is not a cooking utensil. It is a fly/wasp/midge swat!!!!
    We enjoyed a quiet evening with no rain.    Les mer

However the weather deteriorated so we drove east and north on a scenic but challenging route to Salen. Spectacular scenery all the way following the shores of various lochs. Steep and narrow in places but little traffic and plenty of passing places. We arrived at the campsite which is right next to the ferry terminal and again we were fortunate as we set up in the dry. Another campsite with fabulous views.

    This is a blog entry for yesterday (Saturday 7th September). Camping just north of Oban. We woke early to clear blue skies and fantastic views across the sea to the Isle of Mull. We got a bus, departing at 8.30 from right outside the campsite into the centre of Oban. We enjoyed tea, crumpets and honey sitting at an outside table of a couple of quirkily painted cafes overlooking the harbour in warm sunshine! We checked out the seafood restaurants, selected one and made a lunch reservation for 12.15. Margaret then went to Mountain Warehouse and bought some waterproof walking shoes as she was fed-up having soggy feet and socks. Peter decided to walk about a mile along the esplanade past small hotels and guest houses and the (Catholic) St Columbia’s Cathedral, all the way to the ruins of an ancient Castle. The views all the way along across to the Isle of Mull were fantastic with clear blue skies. We both met each other at the restaurant at 12.15 . By 1pm the restaurant was full - probably about 40-50 covers. We dined on a shared platter of mussels, smoked salmon parcels enveloping a langoustine and Thai fish cakes. Peter followed that with a starter portion of smoked salmon pate, toasted ciabatta and salad while Margaret opted for a starter portion of scallop gratin. Excellent food and service, excellent value and a lovely bottle of Trebbiano white wine!
    We caught the bus back to the campsite, still in warm sunshine and enjoyed some more great views. We lazed around, read, looked at the views and chatted with our neighbours - a German couple with a one year old son called Merlin, who like Edward took great interest in everything going on around him. They are doing a big trip from Munich to Scotland to Cornwall!
    Dinner after our very pleasant lunch was tuna and sweetcorn quesadillas seared on the BBQ.
    We have got some great photos of Oban but we are not going to attempt to attach them as WiFi signal is poor.    Les mer

    Yesterday (5th September). Dry and bright morning and we enjoyed a circular walk from the campsite along the beach to Carradale village and harbour. A walk of approximately 4 miles. We had a lazy lunch of mussels, cooked with white wine and cream back at the campsite. The sun shone all afternoon which was a real bonus. Dinner consisted of BBQ scallops wrapped in bacon, followed by salmon fishcakes and hollandaise sauce. All of which we had bought the previous afternoon from the van which came around the campsite.

    Today (6th September), after a blustery and showery night, we struck camp early and left for out 90 mile drive to Oban, around the Kintyre Peninsula. Spectacular coastal scenery following lochs all the way to Oban. We had mixed weather along the way - glorious sunshine and then torrential showers. We arrived at our campsite, 8 miles north of Oban at around 1pm. We had our sandwiches for lunch and then set up camp on a great pitch with fabulous views. We enjoyed an afternoon and evening in warm sunshine with ever-changing views over the sea to Mull.    Les mer

    After a showery and blustery night, we awoke at an extremely soggy campsite, had breakfast, packed up and left for the ferry from Lochranza to Claonaig. We took the thirty minute ferry across to the Kintyre Peninsula and headed for the Seafood Shack at Skipness and enjoyed an early lunch of fish-finger roll and smoked salmon roll, with the silhouette of the ruined Skipness Castle in the background. We then drove through showery rain and torrential downpours on a single-track road but with plenty of passing places, 15 miles to Carradale Bay and the campsite. At this point, the sun was shining and we walked around the campsite to choose our pitch. Although we could have had a pitch with great sea views, we decided it was too blustery. So we choose a more sheltered pitch which is very spacious. Highlight of the afternoon was a red van which drove around the site with a lady from Kintyre Fisheries selling fresh fish and seafood from the back of the van! We selected, scallops, mussels, salmon fishcakes and a specialty of an Asian/Scottish fusion of salmon pakoras which came highly recommend by fellow campers!

    The views from Carradale Bay across to the Isle of Arran and back to the mainland of Kintyre are spectacular.    Les mer

    3. september 2019, Nord-Irland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    We’re off! We drove from Barbon to Ardrossan, a journey of 180 miles, arriving in plenty of time to fill up with diesel and to fill ourselves up with tea at Asda before queuing for the ferry on Brodick on the Isle of Arran. The CalMac (Caledonian MacBrayne) ferry was large and spacious with lots of different seating areas. The journey took 55 minutes.
    At Brodick, we turned left and headed south taking in Lamlash, Kildonan, Lagg and then up the west coast to Blackfoot Water, taking in Arran Aromatics along the way. At Blackfoot Water, we turned east across the middle of the island, back to Brodick and then north to Lochranza and our campsite. The weather, although showery, misty and driech allowed us glimpses of sea and coastline, all of which was scenically very attractive. There are many attractive harbours, bays, villages, craft shops etc.
    We were fortunate to be able to set up camp whilst it wasn’t raining - always a bonus and even enjoyed cooking and eating al fresco - before the next band of mist and rain appeared! The campsite is located at the foot of three Fells (to use a Cumbrian term).
    We are now sung, warm and dry inside Wolfgang. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.    Les mer

    Wolfgang is about to embark on his second Scottish Safari taking his owners with him! Wolfgang has had a full service, been to the car-wash and has been filled up with diesel. We have spent the whole weekend sorting out equipment and re-stocking the pantry. We have bought some new equipment including a small gas BBQ, comfy outdoor chairs complete with fold-out Gin and Tonic tables! Wolfgang now has a “reserved” sign so that if we are camping for more than one night on a campsite and choose to go off for the day, we can drive away and know that we won’t lose our pitch. We are hoping to attach a couple of pictures to this blog entry including a picture of a map so that you have some idea where we are going.

    Ripley again

    Stay with me folks. I am trying another off-line entry! We left Barbon at about 10.30am to drive to Ripley via Harrogate. The road was busy with various roadworks and a lot of tractors transporting hay. It reminded of a song which Sarah sings with Edward of a big red tractor bumping along bring in the hay. “Hay”!Les mer
