  • And so the nervous journey begins.

    October 13, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Up early ish for us now days a cafe noir up the promenade then final pack out and off to the airport. Deviating via a temperamental gas station which was choosing which peoples credit card it would accept or not ! The poor woman ahead of us was nearly in tears trying to fill fill her Fiat 500.
After a cruise through lower Nice a stop to look at the stoney beach with all the tanned and taut bodies - we managed to find where to ditch the car snd strolled to the terminal 2
Checked in found the lounge and relaxed for the boarding call three hours hence.
    It’s been a real blast with a
Terrific bunch of people through the Vaison house.
We have done 2500 kms around Provence in 5 weeks without incident. We have seen some fantastic sights had great food and drinks all over the country.
The venue organised by Bob and Rachel Downer was absolutely top notch and the massive pool got thrashed daily.
So it’s on to Akl via Dubai - let’s hope the blokes firing the rockets off down that way are watching the footy when we fly through there !!

  • Villefranche around the coast to Monaco

    October 12, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Massive sleep for us both then an omelette and coffee on the cafe Along the road. Then off again up the very steep and winding roads out off the coast and then along at considerable heights to the tourist trap of Eze. It’s an old castle on the top of an extremely steep rock outcrop. It has many retail outlets throughout and a 5 star hotel restaurant bars and cafe all utilising the ancient rooms of this incredible castle.
After a good hour or two climbing around we headed on to Monaco for a whistle stop tour as the place was very busy and no parking we could find so Goldie did the obligatory photo shoot while I ducked and weaved the coppers who were glaring at this “Roast Beef” ( French slang for pommies ) parked in totally inappropriate places. Then back to Nice to get the car washed in a self wash - what a fiasco - there was absolutely no organisation and there were cars everywhere and shouting and pushing in - quite disconcerting when one has no idea how the machines work and what the protocols are. I short there were none. Everyman for himself so we took bay and gave our best on the foaming wands and rinsed and polished until the time ran out. Ce La vie. Then back to the dogs for a soothing rosē and settle down for our last evening in France we fly tomorrow arvy for Dubai overnight then Akl home Sunday

  • Vaison to Villefranche

    October 12, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

It was with much sadness we pulled out of Vaison house and headed for the coast
We turned off the A8 and headed through to Saint Tropez then after seeing a motorcyclist in a mangled state and cleared the road block he had caused we headed toward Cannes on the coast road. A slow winding trip not dissimilar to the Thames to coromandel trek but built up all the way mostly 30-50 Km. Then we bailed out onto the motorway again for an evening arrival out our digs on the waterfront n Villefranche. After a bit of hullabaloo finding keys and acesss we dumped the bags and headed 100 mts up the nearest bar for a few very scoops of Bombay and tonic. Delightful they were too then crashed into bed and didn’t wake until 0830 !!! I was a bit knackered.Read more

  • A big days Footy at home

    October 8, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Having trudged to most chateaux, wine caves, Roman ruins and the occasional restaurant or bar of Provence we stayed local and rested up fir three games of the final week of pool play. We did do have a terrific drive around the south east the other day going through a gorge that was in the heart of the French Resistance war with the Nazis. It was quite amazing, having avidly read many books about what those guys did over the years, to be right there in their area of operations.
Also - nearly all the villages through this region have significant monuments remembering them with names dates of death and ages some 18-19 years old. Often three of four brothers on the same day. One can only assume executed in the village square.
Goldie and I snuck off for another superb French luncheon in town a place recommended by some Flems we ran into somewhere along the track.
Very good and very reasonably priced as long you stick just one bottle of rosē and no beers. Food brilliant again
Chocker with locals too - always a good Litmus test if the “Onion Riders”are in - probably a good venue for discerning Kiwis !
We lost Pat n Boong to Italy the other day then Jock and Glynn and their two Louise’s turned to after a prolonged journey from somewhere on a train which sadly mowed a cyclist down enroute to Orange - (the train not the cyclist - he was headed to the morgue. )
Boozer Bobs pommy mates arrived Thursday - four in number and it was like an Airforce “A” strike on the beer and wine supplies of Provence !! Great guys all and had terrific laughs with them as they were all pretty clued up on the Rugby and RWC In general. Thirsty brutes though they were, they pulled out this morning for the UK about a 12 hour run back I believe.
We’ve got Japan v Argentina kicking off in an hour at 1300 local then two more later on. Can’t wait.
We are not looking forward to packing up the suitcases again after such a wonderful few weeks but sadly duty calls back the “Shakeys” so onto the “ Tin Budgie “ we must board on Friday arvy out of Nice - Dubai - Mangere

  • Vaison to Isle sur la Sorgue

    October 4, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

A revisit to this spectacular town for shopping and lunch at a restaurant bar we like called ‘Le Flanker’ goal posts and names up around like Eden Park etc. Food and rosē very tasty and the town quite quiet this Wednesday so a pleasure to wander about - we headed back towards Vaison after the obligatory shopping excursion to the rugby shops and we went through Carpentras and then stopped for a look at one of the Barry chateau in this area to see how they were getting on. This one is in a quiet area called Le Barroux - I ll pop a couple of pics up to give you an idea what were up to a couple of haircuts back.
Then a slow stooge back on the back roads for a swim and a few beers prior to Vicki’s Chicken Coq au Vin.
(The guts has dropped out of the temperature today we are all running for jerseys tonight it’s down to 23 ! Sorry it had to be mentioned)

  • All Blacks v Italy Lyon

    September 29, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Goldie and I stooged up the track to Lyon from our Vaison base taking about 2.5 hrs and found our transit hotel which is just 16 Km from the Olympique Park - using the experience of Nice parking debacles we went over to the ground to establish if there was any parking you a couple old punters from NZ. Low an behold straight into a very large area - biffed them €30 parked inside the ground about 50 mts from our entrance ! About 5 hours early so we went for a wander about and blow me down for the second time in an hour - a huge hospitality area with bars and restaurants everywhere and a quite a few kiwi supporters of all sorts of nationalities having a frosty and a bite - utopia ! Met a great couple from Tauranga who raced stock cars against Pete and knew Sam and Rob from mini stock days very well. Graham and Michelle Peter. Had a very happy few hours as the crowd and antics by them grew around. After a bit of confusion eventually found Bruce and Prue who had our reprinted test tickets had another couple and into the stadium. Great tickets once again great game and a painless extraction back to the hotel for a big sleep. All in all a pretty straightforward operation.Read more
