This started out as a retirement dream.

    Maria Island - Wildlife

    Maria Island is literally teeming with a variety of rare and unusual birds and animals. You will see, without a doubt, many wombats, pademelons, and wallabies. You will also see Cape Barren geese, parrots, and a variety of other birds, including the endangered forty-spotted pardalote and swift parrot.

    As part of a rehabilitation program, 15 Tasmanian Devils were introduced to the island as an insurance population in 2012. Elsewhere in Tasmania, they are near extinction because of Devil Facial Tumour Disease.

    Despite having Australia's healthiest surviving population of Tasmanian devils, your chances of seeing them are minimal unless you camp overnight—they are strictly nocturnal.    Baca lagi

    Maria Island - Darlington

    Darlington is the most representative and intact example of a probation station in Australia. Its 14 convict buildings and ruins are preserved in a layout that reflects the key features of the probation system in Van Diemen's Land. The site has remained relatively unchanged since the convict era.

    Over 165,000 men, women and children were transported from Great Britain to Australia as punishment for their crimes between 1788 and 1868.

    Darlington was recognised in 2010 by World Heritage Listing as part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property.    Baca lagi

    Spikey Bridge & Kate's Berry Farm

    Spiky Bridge

    A quirky structure built by convicts in the 1800s to help connect Hobart to the East Coast still stands as a testament to their hard work. No one has definitively explained why the spikes were added! Was it for a structural reason, perhaps to stop cows from wandering off, an act of or, as revenge by the convicts? Have fun guessing! It's a unique experience and a fascinating look into our convict heritage.

    Kate's Berry Farm

    A beautiful and peaceful little place to visit, where you can also enjoy morning tea.
    The jams are absolutely delicious and the relishes are divine! The highlight for me was the tasting station they provided. Of course, I took a few little take-homes. I'm so glad we made this stopover! It's such a cute location.    Baca lagi

    Swansea - The Bark Mill

    The Bark Mill is a restored mill and museum in Swansea on Tasmania's east coast. The mill is Australia's only restored Black Wattle Bark Mill and possibly the only one in the world. The fully working mill demonstrates how bark from local black wattle trees was once crushed for export worldwide. The bark is the basic ingredient used in tanning. The mill was established in 1885 and continued operating until the early 1960s.

    Burton's Lookout

    As this is our last day in Ulverstone, we decided to take one last tour around the area.

    We left Ulverstone and took the Turners Beach exit, following the winding road through Forth, where the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular. Then, you come across Burton's Lookout, an easy and quiet roadside lookout that offers picturesque views of the little town of Wilmot, Mount Roland, Mount Vandyke, and Mount Claude.     Lake Barrington

    Lake Barrington is an amazing body of water filled with history and rustic natural beauty. This man-made lake spans 20 kilometers and is stocked with king-sized fish by the Inland Fisheries Service. It is the perfect spot for fishing, swimming, boating, and nature lovers. The lake features campsites, picnic areas with sheltered tables, BBQs, and restrooms.

    SkyHigh, Mount Dandenong.

    It was a great afternoon visiting SkyHigh, Mount Dandenong.

    SkyHigh is a spectacular destination that did not disappoint. The panoramic views of Melbourne and the surrounding Dandenong Ranges were nothing short of amazing, even though it was a bit hazy over the city. The restaurant serves delicious food with views that are hard to beat. It was a relaxing afternoon taking a leisurely walk around the beautiful landscape garden; I even loved climbing on the Giant's chair!

    SkyHigh Mount Dandenong is a top-notch spot for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking tranquillity and breathtaking scenery.    Baca lagi

    Wangaratta

    Today was an uneventful day. The awning has now been replaced, and we are heading to Wangaratta. When Phil and I arrived at Big4, we were not impressed; the caravan park is old, and the sites are small. We barely fit our 33-foot caravan. The amenities are clean but could do with a slight upgrade, but the staff were very friendly.

    Looking forward to exploring the area and hopefully getting some push biking done.    Baca lagi

    Today began with breakfast at the renowned Beechworth Bakery. Cornish pastie, steak and mushroom pie for Phil, a ham and salad roll for me, and two hot chocolates.     Mountain Rail Trail

    It was a relaxing day today. There was nothing we could do because of the heavy fog that lasted most of the morning. Phil and I went on a 6 km bike ride this afternoon and ended up at the beginning of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.

    Even though my fitness level is below par, I felt good and quite proud of myself. I just need to take it one day at a time.

    The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail stretches for more than 100 kilometres through the heart of the Victorian alpine region. The trail starts in Wangaratta and connects all the way to Bright. There is also a short detour to Beechworth and a separate section linking Rutherglen to Wahgunyah on the Murray River.    Baca lagi

    Murray River Paddlesteamers, Echuca

    Went on a one-hour cruise on the PS Canberra Paddle Steamer along the Murray River.
    This was a great way to see a part of the Murray River.

    It was a nice, relaxing way to spend an hour while listening to the crew share their knowledge of their vessel and other vessels at the Echuca Port. They explained the history of the paddle steamer, the Murray River, and the surrounding areas.

    It was very impressive to see the exposed steam engine, and everyone on board also had a chance to steer the boat.

    If I ever return, I would choose to do an overnight or three-day cruise.    Baca lagi

    Australian Silo Art

    While passing through Rochester, you will find these sensational Silo artworks located right in the middle of town. I am not sure if Rochester is on or part of the Australian Silo Art Trail, but it is a pleasure to view these vibrant paintings of an endangered Squirrel Glider, Azure Kingfisher, and a Platypus by artist Jimmy DVate.

    Located across the road, Phil noticed and photographed two wooden sculptures, one of an Eagle and the other of a Story Tree.

    The last pictures are of a water tower located in the town of Deniliquin, where we were staying.

    Artist Cam Scale painted two majestic Kookaburras, perched on Gumtree branches. While mesmerised by this artist's work, you walk around and see this artwork transition into a night scene of a star-studded night sky and a welcoming campfire flickering at its base.

    Looking forward to seeing and photographing more Silo artwork during our travels.    Baca lagi

    Last day in Deniliquin, we went for a walk around town. We stopped at a bakery for morning tea, then went and had a look at the Reutilise Ute Sculpture. This is part of The Long Paddock's iconic ARTback outdoor sculpture series. They are located across the touring route from Moama to Wilcannia. Deniliquin is also home to the world-famous Deni Ute Muster.

    That evening, we went to the RSL club for dinner with Phil's nephew and his wife.    Baca lagi

    Dubbo

    Today, we were up at the crack of dawn, as we have a 7-8 hour long drive ahead of us. Along the way, we witnessed a spectacular sunrise and had many rest stops before reaching our destination, Dubbo, where we will be staying for the next three days.

    Old Dubbo Gaol

    Afternoon visit to Old Dubbo Gaol.

    This old gaol offers an extraordinary piece of history without taking up your entire day. As you walk in, you will be surprised by the small, old buildings that housed the cells.

    Each area of interest has a summary near its entrance, making it easy to understand the history and hardships of the inmates and prison officers. The displays had so much information; they were extremely interesting.

    The highlight of my visit was going up to the watchtower and walking along the path where the guards walked.

    We thoroughly enjoyed our time viewing this historic site. It was very informative about the prisoners and their experiences.    Baca lagi

    Taronga Western Plains Zoo part 1

    Taronga Western Plains Zoo is an impressive facility with a large and beautiful landscape, perfect for a day out in nature.

    This was our second visit, but the last time was many years ago. The zoo continues to improve and be enhanced.

    It was great to see the animals in such large paddocks and pens. The areas they have to move around are huge, so there is plenty of room for the animals to be comfortable. We were able to see most of the animals, and many of them were active, but it probably depends on the time of day you visit.

    The best thing about the zoo is that you can drive your car, walk, ride a bike, or hire an electric golf cart to get around the entire zoo. We chose to use an electric golf cart.    Baca lagi

    Wollomombi Falls

    Wollomombi Falls are the tallest in New South Wales, with the water plummeting 260 metres into the Chandler River. At times, the water flow can be intermittent, depending on the rainfall.

    The gorge is absolutely spectacular, and the falls are quite impressive when the water is in full flow. There was very little water flowing today when we visited, and the sun was in the wrong position for the best photograph, but it was still impressive. There are also a number of walking trails to get different views.Baca lagi

    Stonehenge Recreation Reserve

    Stop at Stonehenge Recreation Reserve. A nice, rustic, no-frills spot featuring nature's beautiful artwork. The boulders are unique, with many different shapes scattered around. You will be amazed at their size. There are benches where you can enjoy a picnic or go climbing on the granite boulders in the field.

    I believe this place would be even more beautiful at sunset, especially if you like granite boulders and autumn colours.    Baca lagi
