      Arrived safe and sound in BA. No immigration trouble except that the document I had to prove I had a place to stay didn’t have the address. So there was a moment of fiddle with my phone and the internet and airbnb. But it worked out.Les mer

      I’m my first quest for pesos I found Embassy’s instead. Just one block from my apartment. I know one was the Philippines, and one was Malaysia. The street had lots of little guard buildings. Kind of cool.Les mer

      Sometimes I need to feel like home

      I’d love to write some deep thought about being away from home, and away from loved ones, and the need to connect with the known world, but I’m not that eloquent. Instead I will say, it’s been 23 days on this trip, the language (especially how hard my brain works every day just to get the right direction on the subway) can make the trip less than fun. But there are times when everything clicks, I surprise myself with my abilities, my courage, and my general happy being. I look around and think “Holy Shit! I’m in Buenos Aires, no matter what happens today I’m on a huge adventure. “

      Everywhere in Buenos Aires

      Today was expensive! But I had planned it that way. I have way too many pesos from my exchanges and the rate was very high, so with my time winding down (10 days to go), I thought I’d better spend some. I went to the office and bought a day trip out of town to see a really touristy Goucho show. It was 55,000 pesos about $45 USD and includes lunch and wine and a horse show and ranch tour. I’m 100% sure it will be a long, albeit, corny day. That’s my Friday adventure. I also spent 12,000 about 11 USD in the hop on hop off bus. More about that in my next post.Les mer

      A nice breakfast then day 2 of the pesos quest. Western Union should be open (it’s Monday, but I thought yesterday was Saturday which is my own issue). The WU that is literally 94 feet from my apartment still doesn’t have WU system. WU 2,3 and 4 same issue. I stopped for lunch. (Chicken with fries, a coke and a bottle of water 7,000 pesos or 20.00 USD). If I’d had cash I would have had a 3.00 pizza but such is the life when you are on a quest.
      Then 5,6 and 7 same story.
      I give up, That’s all for me.
      Tomorrow I have a private guide who said she can help me with the “black market” exchange. Anything that works is good for me. Upside is that I did see some nice things today.      Les mer

      And just like I leave Ave Cablido 598 apartment 4C and I’m on my way.
      Observations:
      1. Buenos Aires is a really busy city. 2.Traffic all the time, if you come consider that in your selection of locations to stay. My location was fine but if you are a light sleeper it might have been too much noise.
      3. The theater was great and having 5 in the area would be awesome… if I spoke Spanish better.
      4. If you are a meat eater there is a good restaurant scene. But other options are limited (at least that I found). Beyond the one Chinese takeaway in the mall, my choices were: meat, empanada, pizza, and burgers. I’ve never wanted a salad more than when I can’t find. Oh and the food is surprisingly bland. Not at all spicy. Lastly, sit down type restaurants are open 11-4:00 close from 4-8pm and reopen. Be prepared for late meals.
      5. Every day, no mater what I did, my brain had a language work out. I have a semester of college Spanish and 3 years of high school Spanish and I live in California, and it was barely enough to get by. Consider that if you visit.
      6. Take tours as often as you can, or explore on your own, the City is full of things and history is everywhere.
      7. In my limited experience use Uber (I paid 12,000 pesos for an hour and half ride to the airport) don’t get in a yellow taxi (I paid 6,000 to go about 10 blocks).
      Ending thoughts —Definitely come to Buenos Aires I recommend it. Stay for awhile so you understand a little better the economics,daily life, and general joy of the people. This is a city that moves fast but you need to take it slowly.      Les mer

      Today I did a market run… all the way across the street at Coto. It’s so close I can see it now as I sit on my sofa.
      Here’s a photo of what I bought.
      I like that sauce things (spaghetti, yogurt, mayonnaise, ketchup) come in these package with a spigot. It probably makes them easier to ship. But I’m really at a loss what to do with one After I open it. How do you reseal it so I can have more yogurt the next day.? It doesn’t stand up. I’ll have to look that up.
      Grand total for today. 10,572 pesos Less than $30. It’s a bit confusing because of the exchange rate. As it fluctuates every single day.      Les mer

      Dia 4 - Tigre 🐯

      Oggi abbiamo preso un po’ di trenini e ce la siamo presa con comodo visto il tempo nuvoloso.
      Siamo stati sul Tren de la Costa, con un panorama abbastanza monotono di case e case e case.. per arrivare al mare, o meglio la foce di un sacco di fiumi. Si vede che è bassa stagione, perché in giro c’era poca gente ma almeno ci siamo rilassati.
      Termine corsa del treno è stata la cittadina di Tigre, dalle atmosfere tropicali. 🌴
      La giornata si è conclusa con un meritato tuffo nella piscina coperta dell’appartamento dove alloggiamo. 🏊‍♂️      Les mer

      Laundry Day

      7 days in and it’s laundry day. I went to a Kiosco (newsstand) nearby and purchased special tokens for the washer specific to my building. Each token was 850 pesos (about 1.00 each).
      The tokens are notched specific to my building. In the photo you can see how the doing thing has ridges and the coin has valleys. Like it up and it works.
      One token for wash and one for dry. In 2 hours one load all done, folded and put away.
      Everything about a new country is a learning experience.      Les mer

      Day 4 - Buenos Aires

      Our last day in Buenos Aires before catching an overnight bus to Mendoza.

      The people who own the airbnb apartment that we have been staying in kindly let us stay until the evening so that we didn't have to carry our bags around with us all day. This was great and meant that we gained an extra day of sightseeing.

      We packed our bags in the morning and despite neither of us having very much stuff it's amazing how much we had managed to spread around the entire apartment!

      We then went to visit a beautiful Bookshop called La Ateneo that is inside a former theatre. It has been voted one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world and I can certainly vouch for that.

      In the afternoon we joined another free walking tour of the Retiro district of the city. Here we saw the congress building, the presidential pink house, the obelisk and many more examples of the city's mixed architecture. We also learnt about Eva Peron, a former First Lady who died of cancer at the age of 33. Despite dying so young she achieved a lot, including championing women's suffrage. The famous song Don't Cry for me Argentina is written about her and the speech she gave to the city before she died. Her grave is also in the Recoleta cemetery which we fortunately managed to stumble across during our visit. At the end of our tour which finished outside of the pink house, our tour guide Fernando said that if we liked military ceremony's we should stick around as at 6pm every day they take down the Argentinian flag which flys outside the presidential palace. As it was only 10 minutes away we decided to wait. Now being British and having seen the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace I was expecting something exciting. What we got instead was a guy in militarily uniform who causally walked across to the flag pole and attempted to lower the flag. He couldn't get it to work so he wondered back to the palace and returned 5 minutes later with his mate. The two of them tugged on the ropes a bit and hit the side of the pole but with no success gave up and left. We also decided to give up at this point and caught the subte (the subway) back to our apartment.

      One thing I would also like to comment on about our stay in Buenos Aires is the Mosquitos. The Mosquitos here are on steroids! The were all over the news as Buenos Aires has had an invasion of the evil critters (that still bite you through your clothes) from Patagonia as the city is still unusually warm for this time of year. We will definitely be leaving with more than our fair share of bites!      Les mer
