Iceland in October

Spontaneously booked the ferry on my birthday end of April without even having a car. :-) Since then busy building a rig (Mercedes ML W163), preparing the route and then traveling a totally different route. Stay flexible. Read more

  • Somewhere in Nowhere

    October 1, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Stopping on a small side road for my first telco using my satellite WiFi. Worked perfectly. This is pretty crazy. I'm old enough to remember times when we only had paper maps and cell phones simply did not exist yet. Now this. Weird world. The car is still in travel mode with spare fuel cans, shovel and board inside.Read more

  • Studlagil Canyon

    October 1, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Hexagonal basalt formations with a usually bright turquoise river - apparently too much rain so it's brown. And overcast. So reality is again much less glorious than the pictures. As it is normal these days. So I enjoy the experience of being wet, cold and windy eating two slices of half cold pizza for a small fortune from the cafe at the parking lot. And yet - being here makes such a difference. You cannot doom scroll to the next highlight to get your dopamine flash. Instead you have to walk on your own feet, get wet and then somehow dry your clothes in the confines of your tiny mobile home. Good. Better. Best. So happy to be here.Read more

  • F Roads

    October 2, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

Leaving the paved routes to check out the gravel. This car is so comfortable even on rough roads, very neat. With 25 years and 380.000 km on the odometer not bad.
    Now lunch time.

  • On the F-Road highway

    October 2, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

The landscape is otherworldly. No wonder they come here to shoot SciFi movies. Unfortunately the road to Askja is already closed. The good thing is that the land is empty, almost no tourists (just me).

So enjoying a drive on completely empty gravel roads. Leave the ring road and you are alone. At least at this time of the year I did not see a single car in two hours.

  • Tjaldsvæði Lambeyri campsite

    October 2, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Came late at night, way after dark. Uncomplicated camp site with full infrastructure including washing machine and dryer. They even have a 38° warm pool! Had to do some work in the morning, then quick breakfast / lunch and off to finally get on the "real" roads into the highlands...Read more

    October 3, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

It's kinda fresh around zero degrees but one stunning view chases the next, no time to feel cold. Solo thankful for the exceptional weather, this is by no means guaranteed at this time of the year...

  • Fording

    October 4, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

Honestly, this was one of the things I was really looking forward to. No idea why, but hey, what do I know?

This is the official highway. No "off-roading" here, just to make sure.

  • Hiking in Landmannalaugar, Iceland

    October 6, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

The trail from Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker is an easy 12 k walk. The scenery is simply incredible, an absolute recommendation. Depending on the weather you should... No, start again: No matter what the weather looks like you should make sure to bring extra warm, wind and water proof clothes, gloves, good hiking boots, warm hat and glasses. Sometimes there is very strong wind and when mixed with frozen sleet you are blind. Sounds too much? I thought so as well but actually no, this is perfectly good advice. And if you start as late in the day as I did, you should bring a headlamp.
The video is too big, so had to upload to Youtube here: https://youtu.be/qnowQCH1yKA

  • Hrafntinnusker

    October 6, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

25 k hike starting from Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker starting with rain, then sleet, then snow, then sun, then snow storm, hot springs, stinky vents, an ice tunnel and finally a full moon. Took 200 pictures and don't even know which to choose. But they should be on a cinema screen, not on a frickin mobile device. But what to do...

Short hike to a waterfall. Yeah, just another waterfall, there are so many in Iceland that eventually you lose track and stop to count... But this one will stay in my memory because it almost blew me away. Literally... 😃Read more

Sometimes roads end without much of a warning. This land is so young that everything is still changing quickly.

  • Lakagígar west of Vatnajökull

    October 10, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

Took a hike up Laki, a mountain bisecting a chain of volcanos along a fissure last erupted violently in 1784 (in geological times this is just the blink of an eye). Lots of jet black ashes, frozen lava and moss. I cannot get enough of this, sorry for the many photos... 🤣Read more

  • Found the crowd at Fjaðrárgljúfjur

    October 11, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

After spending two full days in the Lakagigar area which is only accessible with an at least medium sized 4x4 today saw me at Fjaðrárgljúfur which is ten minutes away from the ring road #1. And that is where there are still loads of people. Almost overwhelming after seeing maybe half a dozen cars in the last 5 days and only speaking to one ranger for five minutes to pay the camping fee. And it rained most of the afternoon. But I had some time to test new gear in the morning and for the first time ever flew my drone with goggles in FPV (first person view) mode. Weird but cool 🤪. The first helpless flight meter footage comes later...Read more

  • Vik

    October 11, 2025 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

This is a town along the ring road and shops are stuffed with tourists. And tried to get Hnetusmjör (Icelandic peanut butter 🤣) as a souvenir for my wife because we had that 4 years ago when we were in Iceland together. But it's all in English now. 😑
And the temperature is still rising...

Just another random stop at a signpost pointing to the right. Why not check out what it is, no hurry here. It turned out to be a crevice with a water plus some old trees (a rarity in Iceland), a legend, ghosts and a haunted place. Woohoo, let's check that out! I'll make a short video clip on this one when I'm back home (no time to waste here, tomorrow is my quadrupolast day here. No time to waste!Read more
