      Setting Up Camp

      We had such a good time with Kai that we had breakfast with her at her local cafe before we set off for Greenbushes. I had my favourite, Sriraca chilli scrambled egg .
      Nice drive down to Greenbushes passing lovely Autumn coloured treelined farms and orchards. Got to Greenbushes in good time and were totally surprised at how big our new shade shelter was once pitched.
      A friend commented that we now have a bedroom and living room in camp mode. Soon have sheltered kitchen 🤭.

      We finished our day at an old pub called Shamrock Tavern. Yummy food and giant serves. Spent some time on our very own star gazing at our campsite.      Read more

      Greenbushes Loop Trail 16.93km 5 hrs

      Toasted our bread for breakfast on the public BBQ at the pool down from our campsite. Ate at the picnic tables overlooking the pool.

      We started the hike from our campsite at 10.48am. We walked the trail in an anti-clockwise direction which meant we did the historic walk around Greenbushes town at the start of the hike. In the early 1890s, tin was discovered in Greenbushes, and a town quickly grew around the productive tin mines. The timber industry also helped develop the town to a population of 3000 by 1904. The census in 2016 recorded the town's population at 362. In this trip, Grace and I discovered that the town has woken up somewhat. It's still a small quiet sleepy town, but at least it's not dead. It woke up due to the Talison lithium mine that we hear rumbling 24hrs a day. The Discovery Centre is still shut, but for once, the tiny cafe was open and the Shamrock Pub is beautifully renovated and open every evening for dinner. We're planning to have breakfast at the cafe tomorrow. It's dinner again at the pub tonight. As we are enjoying the benefits of free camping, it is always good to be able to visit the local businesses.

      Back on the hike. It was beautiful, it was long and it did not rain. The terrain wasn't too hilly. A little undulating treks that takes us through the forest , gullies and passing beautiful dams.      Read more

      Medieval Carnivale, Balingup

      Having sorted out our van problems, we arrived in Balingup looking forward to a brilliant day. Dressed to impress, we hit the Carnivale and were immediately blown away by the pageantry. Firstly, it was huge with probably close to 100 stalls, three entertainment stages, fighting arena etc. Secondly it was warm and sunny and just a great day for wenches and dark hooded strangers to be out and about.

      Mead tasting was obligatory, as was watching the demos and learning a little medieval life. Graham even traded in his old "found on the side of the road stick" for an impressively polished staff that will serve him well at future events. Gumeracha Medieval Festival, here we come!       Day 3 - still at Greenbushes Pool

      Decided to stay an extra day at Greenbushes Pool. Such a nice spot to spend some more time.
      The day was very cool and overcast with periodic rain - all day. So, it was a bit of a test of how to cope with dodgy weather with a van - not too bad at all.
      We visited the viewing area overlooking the nearby Lithium and Tantalum mine. Quite and eye opener. Some huge open pit areas. Three pits with all the surrounding areas full of mining activity, and the main Cornwall pit is some 350 metres deep and actually partly below sea level.
      One of the problems we encountered was keeping phones and tablets powered up. Forgot to bring proper 12 volt charging plugs, so we can only charge from the car, when driving along. However, we visited the local Community Resource Centre, and were welcomed in to use some of their power points, in exchange of a small donation. So, we duly left everything hooked up on their plugs and went off to have a long lunch at the local eatery. In fact I think it was the only eatery around. Nonetheless, some decent food and a coffee later, we dragged out our stay for quite a while, before heading off for a walk around the town. Not much to see, and I am sure some of the locals were looking sideways at us as we skulked around the place, waiting for a few more percent to be sucked into our phones.
      Eventually picked up the electronics (with almost 100% on board) and headed back to the pool. Spent the rest of the day, around the Pool, in between rain showers.
      Overall, very happy with the Marrinup Pool site. And the price is right. We did feed the turtle with some coins for a donation.      Read more

      Day 2

      Marrinup to Greenbushes Pool

      Woke up early and decided to drive to our second planned location - another free camp - Greenbushes Pool camping area, just outside of, you guessed it, Greenbushes.
      The one downside of Marrinup had been lack of phone signal and data. But this soon improved, as we got on the road again.
      Spent the morning passing through various towns on way to Greenbushes. Donnybrook seemed really nice - worth a re-visit.
      Found Greenbushes Pool quite easily, with the help of Google maps. Lovely area, around a natural pool. Being midweek, it was very quiet. But I could imagine this will be a busy area on the weekend. There is a kids playground, a free bbq area, and nice beach area leading in to the pool.
      We got in ( a bit tight) to a great site on the upper level of the camping area - overlooking the play area and the pool. Very happy with the sight, and the bonus of having 4G access through the modem - hooray, it does work.
      Caught up on a bit of work and then went for a drive through Greebushes (nothing much) and then on to Bridgetown, which looks like a nice spot. Very friendly at the visitor centre, and a great dog there - cross Arab Bull ? and a Staffie Terrier.
      Did a bit of shopping at IGA, including a Salted Caramel and Macadamia ice cream, then back to the van.
      Had a long chat to one of the campers there, and picked up some good tips. Might have to spend some more money on an extra battery and solar panel. But will see how our free camping experience goes, first.
      Good quiet night. Had fish for dinner, cooked outside on the gas ring that cost all of $10 at BCF - a good buy indeed.
      We can hear some of the activity in the distance from the Tantalum and Lithium mine in the area. But that noise is being taken over by the sound of frogs from the pool.
      We will go and look at the mine tomorrow - apparently one of the biggest of it's kind in Aus.

      Jayes Bridge

      It was so peaceful here on the river. Lots of open space and sunshine to keep the battery charged.

      The added bonus of some magnificent big trees. The free camp area is surrounded by farms. They are baling the hay at the moment.

      Went for a drive wildflower hunting. Found a couple that might be interesting when I do my research. Such nice countryside around here.
      Was only about 40 minutes out of Bridgetown, so not a big trip.      Read more

      Manjimup/Bridgetown

      Out and about Manjimup. Visited Bridgetown, very pretty. Went and checked out the jigsaw gallery. Some amazing jigsaws. Largest measured 7m x 2m and was over 40000 pieces. Would sink a few beers and wines doing that one. Took a look at one tree bridge or what's left.Read more

      Bridgetown & Karri Gully

      We just overnighted in Bridgetown. Had a great free camp area for only 24hrs...the big plus was free power to a lucky 2 vans... you guested, we got on early and grabbed one. Was a cold, wet day so no real photos. We shopped. I cooked ... a big pot of pumpkin soup. As we had power baked a cake and did a roast for dinner. Love our airfryer. Did find the best quilting and yarn store. Would move here just for it 😁😁😁

      We moved on to another 1 night stay. Karri Gully. A pretty pull off and picnic area. There was what looked like a great walk. But freezing cold and raining so not temted to explore.
      I was pleased to find a pretty purple bush I had been seeing with nowhere to spot and grab a photo.      Read more

      Bridgetown ... revised

      Back to Bridgetown for a couple of nights. How sweet are the flowers lining the main street. Open gardens this weekend here.

      Got to visit my favourite craft store and pick up some yummy yarn.

      We needed to recharge the battery after the fuse having an other dummy spit. Them the solar panels not putting in much power with the grey, cloudy days we had at Alexandra River. We weren't allowed to use the generator while camping there.

      Yornup rest area Wilgarrup

      We headed out from Emu beach this morning during a rain storm, aiming to stop at Denmark but when we got there we looked at the weather forecast and realised that it was due to rain for the next 7 days, so we thought better of it and carried on driving.
