What a fabulous morning! We arrived bright and early at the Truffle & Wine Co. ready to learn about and hopefully find some seriously good truffles. Greeted with coffee and PowerPoint (can't escape the bloody things!), our guide Debra explained about the farm, how truffles are grown, harvested etc. They are Australia's biggest producers of the French black truffle, highly sought after around the world.
We then enjoyed breakfast of truffle scrambled egg with truffle butter - delicious! Eggs and truffle are one of those heavenly matches (we learned) that once tried are never forgotten. After this it was time to get amongst the hazelnut trees with Jazz, our adorable golden lab truffle hunter. It is the end of the season so she had to work hard to find them but find them she did, even if they were pretty small. She simply scratches the ground and there it is - clever pooch!
We came back to the winery with our cache and enjoyed a wine tasting before a wonderful lunch of truffle gnocchi (best gnocchi we've ever had) and baked Brie with honey truffle hazelnuts. Did I say decadent???
Another totally unique experience - so lucky. 😄Read more
Traveler Today we had a very slow morning, why not when it's chilly outside, it's warm in the van. After brekie and showers we took off to take a drive to Beedalup National Park and Karri Valley. Pete bought me to this area in 2007 on my very first trip to WA. We stayed at Karri Valley Resort at the time so visited the Resort again and had a lovely lunch in the Lakeside Restaurant overlooking Lake Beedalup. It's still one of my favourite spots in the South West. We watched the little ducks swim past and some very keen people in canoes on the river. When we were here in 2007 we walked around the lake and as it was Summer time also did some canoeing ourselves. Such a peaceful spot. They have built a new caravan park here now, so next time maybe we'll stay. We left the Resort and a few kilometers further was the road to the Beedalup Falls. We didn't get there last trip so we decided to take a walk. It wasn't a hard or long walk and the falls were running with the recent rain. We crossed a little suspension bridge which was a bit scary but it was a lovely walk. We caught site of a cheeky kookaburra, I'm sure he was laughing at us along the way. Nice to not have any rain today but it's still very cold. I am sitting outside in my thermal jacket, as its still pretty chilly, listening to Pete strum his guitar. We are very lucky indeed. Nearly time for Sundowner drinks 🍸🍺 and heater time.
Traveler Day 1 of our Southern adventure and we travelled from our home to Fonty's Pool just out of Manjimup. We had a lovely drive, about 20ks from our destination the drizzly rain started. Not ideal when you have to set up. Being our 1st day our set up took a little longer than it normally does but as we have found on other trips the longer we're away the quicker we get. What a beautiful place this is. The caravan park is reasonably small and really quaint. The Pool area and gardens are gorgeous and well maintained. There was a wedding ceremony here this morning so the grass and Pool had rose petals scattered. Would have been lovely. Even with the cold temperature there were crazy people swimming in the pool. When we checked in the Receptionist offered us a fire pit, which we declined, but by the smoke around most other campers had taken up the offer. It was 12 degrees when we arrived and the temperature is dropping rapidly. We decided to take a drive into the Manjimup township and you could have shot a gun down the street without hitting anyone. Pretty quiet for a Saturday. We did manage to find the pub so we popped in there for a cleansing ale. Pete tried the local brew and I had a lovely Rose from a Pemberton Winery. We decided the bangers and mash was a good option for dinner do stayed before heading back to fire up our diesel heater and snuggle in for the night.
Traveler we started our 4th day on the road as slowly as yesterday. Did I mention how cold it is here. 🥶 crazy to think it's November. Needless to say we were not in any hurry to get out into the world until it warmed up a bit. the sun is at least shining today and the sheep that are in the Paddock behind don't seem to mind how cold it is. After a delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs and avocado we decided to take a drive to One Tree Bridge near Glenoran. It is in the Donnelly Forest and the drive was amazing with the huge Karri trees lining the road as we drove. We found the bridge and after exploring the area there went for a walk to Glenoran Pool. The Donnelly River was running and there were many grass trees growing through the bush dotted underneath the huge Karri trees. The township of Nannup was our next stop and we found a quaint little cafe that served delicious scones jam and cream so that was lunch sorted. We spent some time wandering around the town, popping into a few shops and Pete and I both bought new hats 👒 The town area has beautiful gardens and a truly regal looking old Pub. We didn't venture in as the scones were still settling in our tummies. The afternoon sun is starting to fade so we'll head back to Fonty's Pool now to start packing up a little as we are moving on tomorrow to Denmark. Forecast temps aren't much better there but hopefully the sun will hang around.
