  • Day 1

    June 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Today is the start of camping season for us in 2024.
It has been a long dry summer. We waited for the rain to wet the bush so that we were not in bush fire risk. We inadvertently did an unexpected gruelling 13km hike on 13th of June at Wungong Gorge, in preparation for the Stirling Ranges. In the week leading up to this trip, we were still uncertain about camping here because of the 2 - 5⁰C minimum temperatures, and maximum just above 10⁰C.
It took us 4½hrs to drive to Stirling Range Retreat, and about half hour to set up the tent as the rocky ground put up persistent resistace to our drilling in the pegs. There is no off grid camping around the Ranges, so we had to set up in a caravan park. Not a bad idea as we could always retreat into one of their cabin.
The campsite was rather quiet, and views magnificent and uninterrupted with the front of our tent opening to the Range.
After a yummy lamb stew dinner and a short sit by a communal campfire, we retired for the night.

  • Day 2

    June 18, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The people we shared the communal campfire with were going up Bluff Knoll at 5am to catch the sunrise today. We met them at the kitchen having just come back from the hike when we had just emerged from our tent. 5am is too dark and too cold to be hiking, plus we haven't even had coffee yet. The heart will not start beating till the first coffee was consumed.
We had a relatively lazy, relaxed day as the skies were grey with periodic showers that threatened to develop further. We did a very flat 4km walk around the retreat and spotted lots of orchid leaves but only one green hood banded orchid.
We started preparing lunch of pasta and precooked sauce at 1.30pm, only to realise that the inferior single burner stove took an hour to cook pasta without ever properly boiling. Ruby made the great suggestion that I cook the sauce in the camp kitchen and when the sauce was ready , the pasta still had more cooking to do.
We finally had lunch at 3pm.
We found Bluff Knoll sunrise family's stove top expresso maker and coffee in the kitchen. Ruby had the bright idea to get the office to call them so that we could take it to Perth for them to collect when they passed through. They were a family of 4 travelling from Melbourne and were very happy with that arrangement.
Our good deed done for the day.
The rest of the afternoon was spent sitting in the camp kitchen, dry under the tin roof but still subject to gusts of very cold wind.

  • Day 3 Toolbrunup

    June 19, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The one that got away..... Toolbrunup....
We had a hearty breakfast before we set off for Toolbrunup. Started our hike at 10am, fresh and eager. Ruby scaled this mountain on her own at her first attempt about 4 years ago. I had to give up halfway from nausea and a sore belly. This time I was determined to finish the hike. A mere 3.8km track distance but a relentless steep vertical ascent for 1.9 km and a steep descent of 1.9km. The whole hike took us a whole 7hours to complete. I managed to get 90% of the hike up completed before the nausea and vomiting and tummy troubles set in. ¾ of the way up was scrambling on all fours. With Ruby's encouragement and patience, I made it to the summit. Loved the 360° view from the summit and the accomplishment of reaching it.
Then there was the descent. On bums we shimmeyed down most of the way and with poles to keep me upright, I made it back to the car.

  • Day 4

    June 20, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

We were undecided whether to pack up and leave or stay another night. We were not up to a major hike but decided to stay to do a bit of orchid hunting and some gentle flat walks around this property. We did 17200 steps today compared to 6800 steps but we are not the least bit tired nor drained. Stirling Range Retreat sits on 50 hectares of land with lovely walks around the property, meandering through bush and woodlands. One walk crossed Chester Pass Road and brought us towards the bottom of Bluff Knoll. The sun was out today, and it was lovely having a slow and lazy day around our campsite.Read more

  • Homeward bound
