      Sint-Sixtusabdij Westvleteren

      Yesterday in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

One of the goals I had for Belgium was to buy a case of "The World's best beer", Westvleteren 12. To order it, you have to create an account on the Abbey's website and then wait in an online cue for your turn to order it. The pick-up date is several days later. I placed the order in Porto and then made some preparations to make the journey to the countryside to pick it up. Today, we picked up the rental car I ordered online. I was a bit worried that the car rental might be a problem. Despite the fact that I didn't bring my passport as ID, car pickup went perfectly. Hugh then provided navigation services. It was about an hour and fifteen minutes of driving. The drive also went perfectly. When we arrived, we found out that the cafe attached to the Abbey was closed for renovations. I was pretty disappointed. The cafe had a great menu. It also had a gift shop that sold smaller packs of the beer, gifts, and the Trappiste cheese. I was planning to bring some cheese home. To kill some time before the set time for the beer pickup, and to get some lunch, we drove to a town called Poperinge. We had a really nice time. The town was nice and we had a nice lunch. After lunch, we looked at a few points of interest and then picked up the beer and drove home. The car drop off went equally smoothly, and we took an Uber back to our apartment. Now I have to bubble wrap my prize to survive the flight home. The beer cost €76 for a case of 24. The cost included a deposit for the wooden crate and the glass bottles. The car rental was €68 and the gas to fill up the car was €23. All in the case of beer cost €166.Read more

      Day trip to Bruges

      January 13 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

We heard there was a strike affecting various areas of transportation. Despite the issues, it was still doable to go ahead with our plan to take the train to Bruges. We walked to the train station and made the 30-minute ride. The weather was cool, but nice and sunny. While in Bruge, we walked around the old town (the area within the canal perimeter). Some of the highlights were the Belfort - the central tower, a few of the windmills along the perimeter of the old town, the shopping street, a beer store with an incredible selection, and a walk along the canals. We had a great dinner at a restaurant called De Vloames Trine. I had scallops on pork belly and cauliflower puree, and Hugh had spaghetti bolognese. Our meals were really good. They restaurant was really warm and inviting, too. My cousins told me about a bar that had a huge beer selection and a great atmosphere. It was called 't Brugs beertje. We had a few beers and a great time. There are some hard to get beers in that bar. The strike limited some of the later return trains, so we left by 700pm. We had a great day!Read more

      The highlights of Ghent: Part1

      January 13 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 0 °C

Our first full day in Ghent was excellent. We saw so much of the city. There is something beautiful or designed with incredible architecture almost everywhere you look. We had a delicious breakfast in a restaurant in the old post office. We toured the Count's Castle. While walking around the city centre, we happened upon a large crowd having drinks and celebrating. It turns out the city is celebrating the New Year. Everyone was talking, drinking, eating, and listening to the band playing. While talking with the batista at Starbucks, we learned about viewing the city from the clock tower. We paid the fee and made our way up. The view was amazing. We could also see more of the celebration from the tower. Our plan for the evening was to go for dinner at place for fancy fries, visit a few breweries, and see some of the Ghent Lights walking tour. This was my best day of this vacation, so far.Read more

St. Jakob Kirche zum Start ins Zentrum

      August 7, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Read more

      Guten Morgen, Gent!

      August 7, 2024 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Read more

      Gravensteen Castle, Ghent

      October 6, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

This morning we were awake at our normal time of 7:30am. I made tea and coffee and we both drank them in bed while I plotted a route to Ghent trying to avoid the low emissions zones. It was a total nightmare trying to look for a route on my phone, compare where the low emissions was and then try to plot it in to the sat nav. The problem being that TomTom doesn’t currently recognise low emissions zones. I eventually worked it out by plotting a course that involved 2 fake stops on the motorway so TomTom would guide us around the ring road rather than through the city center.
We arrived in Ghent just after 11am, I’d already found a huge car park on the edge of the city before leaving England and getting there was easy enough. Once parked Ellie fed me up with Wanda toasties before we left. Probably so I wasn’t begging for food like a dog every time we passed a restaurant.
Our original plan was to cycle in on the cycle paths but in the end we decided to walk in and it was about a mile and a half in an arrow straight line right to the city center and our first stop of the day. Gravensteen Castle.
The castle itself is right in the historic part of the city centre, right on the canal with a moat around the outside. Even the local buildings matched the era of the castle and it almost felt like we were back in Disney, walking down diagon alley and visiting hogwarts. There was even a little bar called the troll bar that had hundreds of different trolls in the bay windows, it was an amazing city.
The Current Castle was built in 1180 and was the residence of the counts of flanders until 1353. It was then re- purposed as a court, prison, mint and even a cotton factory. It was restored to its current condition over 1893 -1903 and is now a museum.
I was only here for outside pictures which I managed to get, mostly with no people in them. Then we continued on our tour of Ghent and to our next stop here.
