      A very special stumbling stone

      4. mai, Belgia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      Whom do the STOLPERSTEINE commemorate?
This project commemorates anyone persecuted and/or murdered by the Nazi regime: Jews; Sinti and Roma; Jehovah’s Witnesses; homosexuals; mentally and/or physically disabled people; people persecuted for their political views, their religion, their sexual orientation or the colour of their skin; forced labourers; men considered deserters; people who were persecuted on grounds that they were “asocial” such as homeless people or prostitutes.
NB: STOLPERSTEINE are not only placed for people who died, but also for “survivors”. For example, in front of a house in Amsterdam, a STOLPERSTEIN might be placed for a woman who survived Auschwitz alongside two STOLPERSTEINE for her parents who did not. This “reunites” families. STOLPERSTEINE can also be placed for people who were able to escape to Palestine or South America or survivors of concentration camps. The project also commemorates those forced by the circumstances to commit suicide.

Frida Kahlo en veel van Brussels

      12. juni 2022, Belgia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      3. april 2023, Belgia ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

      Farewells to yurt and friends

      31. juli 2023, Belgia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today we woke up for the final time in the yurt. We packed everything up, grabbed one final bacon sandwich and headed to Brussels. The drive was fairly easy and it was time to say farewell to Holly and Kate. It was so nice spending time all together and the group really got along so well. We'll see Kate soonish but it'll be a while to we see Holly, the newest UK convert. Kate is off to Paris then home and Holly is off to Paris as well but then will continue her travels.
We then navigated back through Brussels to the outskirts to our accommodation. It was confusing to find the accom but luckily a lady eventually came out with our key. We then turned the Matilda's game on and it was almost half time, so after a brief sit we headed into the main centre.
We found an Irish pub and watched the end of the game which was very exciting. We then walked trying to find somewhere for lunch. After passing a few places, one place got us as the waiter put on an Aussie accent after asking where we are from. We then visited a bar named the Squire which had a horse shoe as its logo and horses on every table. The waiter was wild and when I went to pay, the waiter and I were dancing together. He literally grabbed my hands and we did a quick two step. Dance is the universal language. On our exit, some other guy was also having a boogie with us. The Squire really was my scene.
Next we walked to what Liisa dubbed the 'oldest shopping street in the world' which was literally home to about 10 chocolate/macaron shops. Liisa tried 3 different macarons and had a good time. We then got a Belgium waffle, however we weren't allowed to sit in the shop unless we all bought a drink... So we struggled to eat them outside with what resembled a toothpick. Erin was the Waffle Wally and somehow managed to have cream on her nose. We had seen this souvenir of a small boy statue peeing literally EVERYWHERE so had to check it out. It was Pissing Boy, potentially the son of the original Pissing Men (see Prague day). It was also a tiny statue, which is allegedly a replica. We bought souvenirs anyway as it was hilarious.
We then caught the train back and walked once again in the rain. Had a shower and watched some Vampire Diaries. It's been a big few days for us all.

      Brussels Day 1

      2. desember 2023, Belgia ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Our night was amazing - we are LOVING Brussels!!

1.) Saw the famous Mannaken Pis statue (dressed up for Christmas which is so fun)

2.) Had dinner at “NuetnigEnough” - i had the puff pasty pie and classic “Brussels Frites (fries).” Such a cute small restaurant, only ~8 tables, very friendly staff and delicious food :)

3.) Then had Belgian beer at La Port Noir which used to be the kitchen for a monestary! Such a cool place and loved my cherry sour beer.

4.) Ended the night with a (surprise) lightshow in Grand Place, followed by “Gluhwein” (mulled red wine) and the Christmas Market right by our cute AirBnb ✨

      Brussels

      30. september 2023, Belgia ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

They were unfortunately setting up for a marathon in the Grand Place, so it spoiled the ambiance a bit, but still almost absurdly gorgeous buildings. And yes, I also got a picture of the Manneken Pis :P Fyi, the glass covered shopping arcade is Europe's oldest continually operating one, and the building to the left of the spired town hall is where the Communist Manifesto was written.Les mer

      Brussels 101

      28. august 2023, Belgia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After a rainy first day in Brussels, we awoke to a much nicer day for a second and last full day before we headed off to Paris the next day. We had a sleep in and planned out some activities for the day.

The first stop was a trip to the European Parliament which is one of the main offices of the European Union. It was interesting to explore the buildings and the scale was immense compared to the Beehive. We made it to the main parliament chamber which was set up to cater hundreds of MPs from all across Europe, with live transalation into all the different European languages.

After finishing up at the European Parliament, we walked slowly through a nearby park to find some lunch. We settled on a Syrian restaurant, which turned out to be some of the best food we’d had on the trip to date. In the afternoon we had booked a food & beer walking tour so we had some time to kill before that began at 4pm. We continued exploring the city, going through a park with some interesting cartoon, animal-themed water fountains, and stopping for some coffee along the way.

At 4pm we made our way to the starting point of the tour. We were greeted by Thiago, our very friendly and enthusiastic tour guide. There were 20 or so other people on the tour too from all around the world. Our tour mixed sights, history, food and a Belgian beer tasting at the end. First was chocolate tasting at Pierre Marcolini’s shop. Thiago described Pierre Marcolini as the Gordon Ramsay of chocolates, and we were all given a small box of assorted chocolates and a macaron to taste. The fact they didn’t last long probably describes how good they were. We continued walking through the city, with Thiago providing insights into the history of Brussels. The next food stop was for fries and waffles, two classically Belgian treats. Both were incredible and a perfect way to fill us up a bit before our Belgian beer tasting. The beer tasting contained a range of beers, from older trappist beers brewed by monks, through to modern IPAs. We enjoyed our drinks while making some friends with the other people from our table who were from Austrlia, Germany, Brazil and Canada. All in all the tour was great and it was a good day in Brussels. -V
