  • 4.1 Staying at BahaSea in Nassau

    September 18, 2018 on the Bahamas ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Had a lucky dip by choosing a very nice hostel/hotel called BahaSea Backpackers (https://bahasea.com). Definitely a recommendation.
(If anyone is ever going to the Bahamas, go there. You can have a dorm bed or a private room. However, everyone uses the same public area, which creates a wonderful atmosphere. Suitable for all ages.)

Nassau, by the way, is the capital of the Bahamas and it is located on the island “New Providence”. Connected to this is “Paradise Island” on which the Atlantis Hotel and Resort/Adventure Park is, which is mostly referred to as being in Nassau. However, the locals strictly differ between New Providence and Paradise Island.

Another Fact: The Bahama Dollar is tied the the US dollar, meaning it always has the same exchange rate. Makes everything very expensive. Good thing about this: You can pay with both currencies.

  • 4.2 Love Beach

    September 19, 2018 on the Bahamas ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

First day at the beach with some people (now friends) from the hostel.

The beach is called “Love Beach” And is directly in the line of the airport runway, so you can watch the planes coming in.

Bus driving works different here by the way. You get on a bus which you can stop wherever you like by waving your hand. You then go I to the bus and ask the driver if he is going to the destination of your choice or not. If so, you stay in the bus until you are more or less at the place you want to go and you give him 1,15 Bahamanian Dollar. If he is not driving in your direction, you might have to wait for the next bus for an unspecified duration (usually between 5 and 20 minutes) and you repeat the procedure. Another possibility is that the driver changes his rout a bit for you to take you to the destination you ask for, even if he has to turn around for that.

    Take that AVV!

  • 4.4 Day trip to Eleuthera Island

    September 21, 2018 on the Bahamas ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Apparently, you have to us the plane to get from island to island if you want to be fast, e.g. for a day trip. So we booked two flights, one to Governor’s Harbor and one back to Nassau, both with Pineapple Airlines, ... or as we refer to it blew: Adventure Airlines. You fly with a propeller driven plane that can hold up to 20 people (excluding the two pilots) and has been doing this for 30 years. At least it looks and feels like that.
However, your adventurous attitude is rewarded with a beautiful with of the Exuma Sound and the Eleuthera Island.

With our “rental car” (barely driving and making unusual sounds/noises) we were exploring the island, stoping here and there.

And it was all worth it. Incredible beaches ...

  • 5.2 Cuba, Havanna - Santa Maria Beach

    September 25, 2018 in Cuba ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

First day in Havanna and we went for the beach, which is a bus ride away out of the city.

Side fact: The tourist bus (same as in Europe) is 5 CUC (equals 5$) for both ways. The local bus is 5 CUP (equals 0.20$) for one way.

So in general: There are two currencies in Cuba. The “Cuban Peso (CUP)” and the “Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC)”.

    25 CUP = 1 CUC*

*the CUC is coupled to the US$ to b almost 1:1.

Cubans and tourists can pay with both currencies. However, prices exist in both currencies and tourist usually bay th CUC price, wich is a lot more, of course.

  • 5.5 Collectivo a Viñales

    September 28, 2018 in Cuba ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Those typical old American (50s/60s) cars that everyone knows Cuba for are mostly used as taxis. But some are also used privately by Cubans.

In our case, we shared a “collectivo” taxi from Habana to Viñales, a popular city in the tabaco region Pinar del Rio of Cuba (tabaco is Spanish for tabacco). Very interesting ride, especially when the driver keeps going 50 km/h in a strong rain shower ... with no windshield wipers what so ever.

However, we stopped at a tabaco plantation and got free (I mean really free, free) coffee and an introduction to the tabaco making process. You could even smoke one fro free. I did not use any of the services, as I still don’t smoke and drink coffee. I enjoyed the smell though.
We also made our own cigar, being taught by a professional. Of course it is not that easy, so ours looked like sh...

Never mind, it was super cool.

(Unfortunately I took no pictures, only video, so you have to wait for th Cuba movie)

  • 5.6 Huge Rainshower in Viñales

    September 29, 2018 in Cuba ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

One of my favourite moments in Cuba. We met this super open and friendly Cuban guy. We randomly bumped into him on the street and he gave us shelter under some roof. But not just that; we chatted a bit (in broken Spanish), which was super enjoyable, and he afterwards invited us for a kind of tour into the backland/country side of Viñales. This included basically meeting all his family on the way: mother, sister, brother, girlfriend of brother, cousin 1, cousin 2, grad cousin, grandfather and uncle. Super fun!

He showed us several different plants and we ate berries, star fruits and bananas directly from the tree or bush. He even took the girls piggyback to cross the rivers that were coming out of nowhere because of the rain. We also stopped at a café plantation and got an introduction.

And at the end, he was not even demanding money or similar. What a great guy! Would you agree girls?

  • 5.7 Visiting watefalls in Trinidad

    October 1, 2018 in Cuba ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

In Trinidad we went to visit a little waterfall in the forest, which is a popular thing to do there. Thing is, you can basically get there only by horse. So we, once again, were taking a horse ride as we already did before in Viñales to visit the tabaco and coffee plantations. However, this time it hurt even more.

How the heck can you comfortably ride such a thing. Although they are semiautomatic (meaning they todo the tour every day and literally know the way in their own) it is not that easy. Maybe I am just not used to it, but there is literally no position in which I was able to have a relaxed ride. For my part, I need a proper theoretical introduction and then some practice. In this case it was rather a trial and error way of finding out how to ride a horse.

Nonetheless, the ride ended at the waterfall which a beautiful scenery and super relaxing. Liked that a lot.

  • 5.9 Cuba Movie

  • 6.4 Paddle boarding

    October 13, 2018 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

A little tour for 3 h with the hostel. Super nice to do it in the mangrove area.

You start in the port and go to a little beach and then back.

Even better, right after we packed everything together, we were hit by this enormous rain shower. Incredible! All while we were paddling.Read more

  • 6.5 Cancún Beach Clubs

    October 14, 2018 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Cancún is one giant enormous party!

Of course we went to a beach club. Which was great. The play house-longe music for the hole day until night, when the party starts. However, everything is super expensive.
So best way is to go with people who are spending a lot, then I don’t have to.

  • 6.6.2 Visiting a turtle farm

    October 16, 2018 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

It is a obligation to visit the turtle (not tortoise) farm on Isla Mujeres. For all the non-zoologists of you (twinkle), turtles are the animals with the big shell around their body and fins to swim (lives in the water). Tortoise are the animals with the big shell around their body and legs to walk (lives on land).

It was interesting to see and look at those little things, ... they are so cuuuuut! *Laura!

However, the living conditions are not very good on those farms. As you see, they live in very simple tanks/pools and have not much space and fun.

¿Did you know?: turtles and tortoises can feel through their shell because it is grown to their body. It’s about as much as you can feel someone poking your finger nail form above.
Learned that together with my lovely aunt Laura, who will most likely love this post!
