  • Crazy 5-Day Trek in Ausangate

15 de junho de 2018, Peru

Five days of trekking in Peru. We did a cushy tour with lodges heated by fireplaces at night and delicious, hot meals served every day, but there were still ups and downs - literally and figuratively.

The Ausangate mountains, part of the Andean mountain range, are no joke, especially at these elevations (we were no lower than 14,000 feet for all five days!) and when covered in so much unexpected snow. There was some minor altitude sickness and lots of sketchy paths that shouldn't have been taken or at least we should have had crampons.

But damn, the views!!! The colors of the sunrises, the lakes reflecting the peaks above, the incredible star gazing at night, seeing the Rainbow Mountain in all its colorful glory. I don't know if I've ever been anywhere more beautiful.

  • UNTOLD!!!!!

    2 de agosto de 2018, Romênia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

    SO MUCH FUN.

Before the music festival, we wandered through the main square of Cluj and saw the cutest mobile prosecco van being set up for a private party. After seeing me take some photos and hearing me exclaim how adorable it was, the owner kindly poured us some prosecco and invited us to join the party. Perhaps it really is the nicest place in the world!

After a crazy crazy attempt getting to the airport in Brussels, we somehow made our flight (thank you WizzAir for having such poor on-time performance!). Just in time for Chainsmokers, Kygo, Tiesto, and Jason DeRulo. SO GOOD.

  • Dubai

    18 de outubro de 2018, Emirados Árabes Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Dubai was one really weird city, big and gaudy and so much wealth in the middle of the desert, with a mix of intense Muslim culture. It made me feel a little uncomfortable walking around. Can't say I liked it much. But seeing the fancy stores in the Dubai Mall, the light show at the Dubai Mall Fountains and having tea at the 123rd floor of the Burj Khalifa was pretty great!Leia mais

  • Overnight with the Bedouins

    26 de outubro de 2018, Jordânia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Amazing two nights at a Bedouin camp in the middle of the Wadi Rum desert. Over the last few years, this area has become very touristy with so many camp offerings, numerous jeeps driving visitors around, and nearly 40 people at our camp. But none of that took away from the fun or beauty there.

We got to see huge sandstone formations lined by red sand, scramble over giant rocks to see incredible views, and experience traditional Bedouin music and dancing over candle light. We even got to see the first rains in the desert after seven months.

  • No thanks.

    28 de outubro de 2018, Jordânia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

This bubble hotel seemed like a great idea. When we showed up, I kept gawking about how cool they looked, like a city on Mars or something. But in reality, not so fun when there are intense winds banging on the outside of your bubble, making you feel like you're in a constant earthquake.

Also not fun when the electricity goes out in the middle of the night, causing the entire bubble to deflate on top of you.

Even the main tent didn't hold up so well to the storm with massive rips through the siding.

Turns out this is my new fear.

  • Made a New Israeli Friend

    15 de novembro de 2018, Palestina ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

On the Jewish side of the Western Wall, men pray and offer written wishes to be placed in the cracks of the old temple's foundation. As this area is maintained by Orthodox Jews, men and women are still segregated in their prayers.

However a new section of the Western Wall has now been established for Reform Jews who choose not to segregate.

Such interesting stories and history here.

We also got approached by a Canadian-Israeli evangelical Jew. His mission is to get more people to either convert or just do more with their Jewish faith. He invited us into the nearby yeshiva to sit in on a class and see the Western Wall from above. Definitely interesting!

  • Absolute Magic

    24 de novembro de 2018, Quênia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Absolutely amazing day in the Mara - we were watching a family of elephants when a leopard walked right in front of us, saw a sleeping pride of lions super close, enjoyed breakfast while observing the hippos in the river (Brice's dream come true!), witnessed a hyena chasing after a wildebeest during our incredible sundowner drinks in the bush. I can't get over how magical this place is. I don't ever want to leave!Leia mais

  • Well that didn't go as expected

    6 de dezembro de 2018, Zimbábue ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Well our volunteer experience at Imire in Zimbabwe didn't go nearly as we had hoped. We disagree with the organization's standard of animal care - I cried or nearly cried every day we left our activities on the "reserve." Imire does a lot of good for the local community and I realize that my utopian ideals for wildlife may be somewhat unrealistic, especially given the high risk of poaching and the political and economic turmoil in Zim. There are some logical reasons for most of the treatment and some positive goals for the future, but I certainly wish the elephants, rhinos and other animals there were able to be wild and undisturbed, not locked in pens or tied up by chains.

We did meet some great people though and certainly had some fun once we were at the volunteer house, doing team building games and eating so much good food. Learning about Shona culture was wonderful and the local staff like Trymore were really wonderful.

I always hate quitting things I've committed to and certainly feel guilty given the money we spent to do this part of our trip, but staying another week was with the animal treatment, plague of bugs at night and bats with questionable diseases flying in our bedroom was just too much for us. Leaving was a hard, expensive decision that I struggled to make but in retrospect sooo thankful and happy we did.

  • Elephant love

    21 de dezembro de 2018, Tailândia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

My friend Lauren and I spent an overnight at Elephant Land, two hours outside Chiang Mai. Our time consisted of feeding the five elephants lots of bananas, walking with them through the jungle, giving them a mud bath and rinse off in the very very cold waterfall. We spent the night in a rustic jungle hut, making friends with the Thai guides and the other fellow tourist Ahmen from Mumbai, eating a ton of curry, singing songs (Chang, the kids song about elephants) and drinking Thai home brewed rice wine. The next morning, we bushwhacked our way on a 4 mile hike through the Doi Inthonan national forest before heading back. Such a fun crazy adventure.Leia mais

  • Spontaneous Half Marathon

    23 de dezembro de 2018, Tailândia ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

At 5pm yesterday as Lauren and I were strolling through the old city, we stumbled upon the expo for the Chiang Mai Marathon, which was happening that night at 2am (yup, you read that right). In the spirit of spontaneity while traveling, we figured what the heck, let’s sign up for the half marathon!

So a few hours later, we ran 13.1 miles under a full moon, through the streets of this amazing northern Thai city.

I haven’t run in weeks and only shorter distances, so it was a lot slow and a little painful towards the end, but an awesome experience nonetheless.

  • Beautiful temple

    3 de janeiro de 2019, Tailândia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Our friend Summer is now staying with us for a few weeks. We toured around the Old City and stumbled upon one of the best temples I’ve yet visited, Wat Chedi Luang. Built in the late 1300s, you can still see the elephant sculptures lining the pagoda. Along with the colorful lanterns and flags, it’s a beautiful sight.Leia mais

  • Short trip to Myanmar

    3 de fevereiro de 2019, Myanmar ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Short overnight to Tachileik, Myanmar, the town on the other side of the Thai border, to extend our visa. In a way it feels a bit like Thailand's Tijuana, with gambling, girls and garbage in your face much more so than in Chiang Mai. But excluding all that, we found it to be an interesting trip, the surrounding mountains were beautiful and people very friendly and welcoming, especially those working at the border control!Leia mais

  • Hong Kong in 3 Days

    1 de março de 2019, Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Three short days spent exploring Hong Kong: hawking at all the giant buildings, walking almost 30 miles, hiking Lion Rock for a full view of the city, somewhat hopelessly trying to find vegetarian food, wandering through the markets, admiring the Symphony of Lights show on the night skyline, and enjoying a memorable conversation with a wacky, drunk but very welcoming restaurant owner.Leia mais
