    11. September 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Miini Reis startet in Guatamala (Antigua).

    11. September 2023 in Guatemala ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

• Copan (Honduras)

    12. September 2023 in Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Ufem Weg het euis de Guide no spannendi Facts über Guatemal verzehlt. Guatamala heisst übrigens übersetzt "Land of many trees".
Zerst hemer no es sehr feins Mittagesse derfe gnüsse und denn i de heisse Quelle i de mitti vo de Natur entspanne.

  • Time to say goodbye

    28. September 2023 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Rice with beans or beans with rice?
During these 17 days on the group tour across Central America, I had many exciting experiences, met wonderful and warm-hearted people, learned a lot about the true stories in the countries and was able to experience the beautiful nature and wildlife at first hand. It was a very educational time and I can go into my next adventure with a full backpack of memories. Even though it is hard to say goodbye to my new friends (especially my new and close friend from Ireland), I am sure that we will meet again somewhere and sometime!
Unfortunately, I couldn't write my travel blog regularly, but I will make a short summary here. Pictures speak for themselves anyways😊
Overall, I can definitely recommend this group tour! It allows you to travel through countries that are a bit dangerous on your own. Furthermore, it was also very exciting to travel with people from different backgrounds and ages. Of course, it takes some adaptability and flexibility and you are less free where and how long you want to stay in a place, but you can let yourself go and don't have to worry about anything.

Deniz our guide was great! He took care of everything, made suggestions for restaurants and activities, always took us safely across the borders (which was always a bit of a nightmare and needed a lot of patience). What I really appreciated was that despite being in a group, you were very free to choose which activities you wanted to do and you could also withdraw if you needed time for yourself. During these 3 weeks, I was able to travel to 5 different countries, which were all very different. However, I think my highlights were El Salvador and Nicaragua. In both countries I was able to learn a lot about history at first hand. It showed once again how much false information we get from the news in Europe and that if you really want to learn about the truth of the stories, you have to talk directly to the people from the affected areas. Except in San Jose, I never felt unsafe, of course you always have to be attentive. The people are very warm and kind and it is so nice to see that they are happy despite having few possessions. Other highlights were the small spontaneous private parties with the group, where we learned Irish dancing and listened to different music from the countries or played games. I also learned a lot about the history and culture of Ireland. It touched me personally to experience the pride of the Irish people in their origins and history. I also learned that "I am fine" is not convincing for "I am good" you have to say "I am grant" instead😄
To sum up, it is a gift and a privilege to be able to make such a journey and it is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer in many ways. I am very grateful that I got the chance to have such experiences and to have met all these great people! Pura Vida!

  • Day #1: Barrio Getsemani

    30. September 2023 in Kolumbien ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

After my adventure in Central America, I have finally arrived in Cartagena. There, I go to a language school for 3 weeks and live with a host family. The flat is in the Manga district, which means mango in the indigenous language. The host mother is very nice, but it is not easy to hold a conversation with little knowledge of Spanish. The children are already 11 and 17, years old, but as far as I understand, they are only here on certain days and otherwise live with their grandmother. So far I just Met Mariana the daughter. Furthermore, I have a great view of the harbour from my room. Today I had two typical Colombian dishes for my morning meal. Buñuelos, are like sweet doughnuts (Krapfen) or cream puffs (Windbeutel), which remind me a bit of "Fasnachtschenkeli", and a yellow dragon fruit (pitaya), which tastes similar to kiwi or pear.
Moreover, It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the old town. It is very hot (40 degrees) and only my room is air-conditioned. This means that after a shower, you start to sweat again 😅 Today, I went on a free walking tour. It was very exciting and now I'm finding my way around a bit better. I'm looking forward to school on Monday and hope to meet some nice people then so that we can go on excursions together. It feels a bit lonely after the group tour and I am more on my own again. However, I really miss the people from the group tour! But I think it takes some time to get used to the new environment and new people😊.

  • Day #4: First day at the Spanish school

    4. Oktober 2023 in Kolumbien ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Today I got to try another speciality called Cayeye for breakfast. Cayeye is a dish of Colombian cuisine made from mashed green guineos, a type of green banana. It is mainly eaten for breakfast. I think it tastes great! It's so nice to be able to try something new every day. I also got a delicious, healthy green juice😊 The host mother is really nice and integrates me really well. It's not always easy to have a conversation, but we try.
Afterwards, I walked 10 minutes to school. It was to be expected, of course, there are many Swiss. Another family with two children, a Swiss woman and a German started the first day of school with me. First we had to take a placement test. Now I am in the class together with the parents from Colorado, a young Swiss woman and another Swiss woman (who has been in Cartagena for a while). I only have school in the morning. Unfortunately, it rained a lot at lunchtime, so I was forced to buy an umbrella 😅 Lunch was also good, but once again a bit salty. Here they say "you're happy when the food is too salty"😁.
To sum up, after the first four days, I can say that I more or less like Cartagena, especially the old town and the colourful Getsermani district. Otherwise, however, the city is not really beautiful. It has many high-rise buildings and the beaches are not really nice either. However, I enjoy the many small cafes and restaurants. I still have to settle in a bit, but I'm slowly getting used to life here.
For dinner, I was able to try another speciality called ajiaca, a chicken soup with potatoes and corn.
