    Agnes Waters

    February 28, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

March arrived and time to hit the road once more
Uncontrollable variables making our plans unsure.
First stopping in Yandina to catch up with friends
A few nights in Agnes Waters we want to spend.

Travelling in Chris’s boy toy, a Toyota ute
It’s rather a beast but he thinks it’s beaut.
A black canopy protects our gear from rain
It’s 4WD engine capacity handles any terrain.

Local National Parks perfect to give it a go
Potholed sand tracks make the going slow.
Discovering an estuary that exceeds expectation
Floating in it’s waters definitely feels like a vacation.

Morning coffees and long beach strolls
Absorbing sunsets atop of rugged knolls.
Anchored yacht reflections in 1770’s inlet
Days spent in this area you’ll never forget.

  • Yepoon and Keppel Island

    March 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Grabbed a yummy crab sarni on the way to Yeppoon
To an Airbnb stay complete with spa and cinema room.
Reflective thoughts the Anzac walk does bring
At Emu Park with it’s ship sculpture that sings.

Boats jostle and bob in the harbour of Rosslyn Bay
Where we start our trip to Keppel Island for the day.
Aquamarine waters and empty long stretches of sand
Challenging rock pathways make for a hike unplanned.

A snorkel & casual barefoot lunch is the island’s way
Fingers crossed commercialism continues to stay away.
Tranquil warm waters in which to fish, relax and wallow
On the ferry ride back wishing we’d stayed ‘till tomorrow.

  • Airlie Beach

    March 9, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Next a long uninspiring road before we reach
The Whitsundays and our stay in Airlie Beach.
But first calling into the airport of Proserpine
Meeting Dieter & Michaela who arrived on time.

Although we’ve visited here many times before
Beautiful to see azure waters lapping the shore.
Our first foray out proved to be totally tropical
With a 60 second drenching that’s very typical.

Cockatoos visited us on the rails of the balcony
Their unique arrival squawks, a real cacophony.
At night hearing frog croaks and plovers screech
Whilst stone curlews moan down along the beach.

Our guests felt odd consumed with jet lag
Slow to unwind, relax and unpack each bag.
The Great Barrier Reef beckoned an overnight sleep
Chance to discover another world under waters deep.

  • Townsville, QLD

    March 14, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Froggies Beach, Cape Gloucester & Cedar Creek Falls
Rose Bay to Horseshoe Bay walk with pink rock walls.
Frozen mango and juicy lychees are local delights
Kilometres of sugar cane crops an awesome sight.

Their green tall leaves sway lining sides of the road
Suitcases weighing heavier under the canvas load.
Arrived at Townsville in the middle of a heatwave
Magnetic Island shimmered in the resultant haze.

Another ferry trip taken across to Nelly Bay port
Koala spotting walking to the World War II fort.
With stinger suits & snorkels the wreck site we ensued
Feeding carrots to rock wallabies who happily chewed.

Devouring delicious gelato before it melts in your hand
Townsville waterfront appreciated walking the Strand.
A crocodile sighting, the beach closed with a red flag
Detour to shady Queens Park certainly wasn’t a drag.

Welcoming shadows under a myriad of tall trees
Kaleidoscopic canopies swaying in the breeze.
5am goat track walk to watch the sun rays show
Marvelling in the new day’s radiant, orange glow.

  • Mission Beach to Atherton Tablelands

    March 17, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Transversed boulders at Jourama Falls for a refreshing dip
Before arriving at Mission Beach for an icy cocktail to sip.
Silhouetted palms, fringe the wave lapped beach so calm
Sundays eclectic, exotic market stalls were a total charm.

Headed north west, up the Misty Mountains range
Past vast banana plantations for a scenic change.
Grateful for a tasty fresh paddock to plate lunch
On local dairy farm produce we happily munch.

Ulysses butterflies seen at Milla Mila Falls and pool
Temperature drop meant for swimming t’was too cool.
Along a meandering Atherton Tableland road we wind
Until eventually our AirBnB accomodation we did find.

Remote & unique with a welcome glowing fire pit
A chance to breathe, relax and for a little while sit.
Before the rain tumbled down incessantly loud
Our next 2 days we spent living inside a cloud.

These wet tropics are far away from sandy beaches
Sturdy shoes required and beware of slimy leeches.
Anticipated views of Bartle Frere we missed
Tantalising us within a constant swirling mist.

  • Fan Palm Creek, Daintree

    March 22, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Venturing further north towards the infamous Daintree
Where ancient rainforests meet the coral reef and sea.
Over the crocodile infested river by ferry we did sway
Deep inside dense green forests for our off grid stay.

An authentic Queensland home oozing with charm
Running creek edged with hundreds of Fan-palms.
Darkness descended & fireflies flickered and poised
The cicadas and frogs chorus a crescendoing noise .

Boardwalks followed under thick vines that are twisted
Understand why this ecosystem is world heritage listed.
An opportunity through it’s canopy we could zip
Hanging via a steel line and onto canvas we grip.

Interesting aspect into a bird’s world we peek
Exhilarating to fly over gushing flooded creeks.
Thrilling to experience and we definitely enjoyed
Glad the area is conserved never to be destroyed.

To see endangered Cassowaries is luck, not tricks
Were privileged to spy a proud Dad with two chicks.
Nonchalantly walking down the middle of the road
Then ducking into undergrowth their natural abode.

The rain swelled river, we cruised by fishing boat
As another squall engulfed us, glad of a raincoat.
When the sun finally shone it felt more like a dream
A few fish escaped, landing only one small bream.

  • Mossman to Palm Cove

    March 25, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Time to head south again, via Mossman we drove
To the beautiful holiday village known as Palm Cove.
Staying at the luxurious Mango Lagoon 4 pool resort
30 minutes from Cairns with efficient public transport.

Through the range behind, a road does meander
To an ex hippie tourist village named Kuranda.
Here the Barron River flows over rocks and drops
Chance to see koalas, butterflies and a few shops.

Went to Cooya Beach via Port Douglas, just us four
To experience the Kaku Yalanji indigenous culture tour.
Viewed artefacts created from seashells and seeds
Squelched through the mud flats as the tide recedes.

Learnt to throw a spear, hunt and gather food
Clambering over mangroves a satisfying mood.
De-husking coconuts ensure nothing goes to waste
A spicy turtle and periwinkle soup we got to taste.
