  • Come From Away!

    22 février, États Unis ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

The day was not over. We went back to Micheles, and got ready for dinner, our good friends from ATW2023, Cindy & John, picked us up and we went to a great dinner and then into Phoenix for a wonderful production of Come From Away at the Phoenix Theater Company.

“38 Planes, 7,000 strangers and 1 unforgettable act of humanity that united us all”.
It is a true story of the people of Gander, Newfoundland that welcomed these stranded travelers after 9/11 and generously opened their homes and their hearts, making lifelong human connections and proving that even in the darkest times, compassion can shine through. As I said when asked for audience feedback (yes, it was recorded), it is a wonderful story to be told over and over!

It reminded me of Pirkei Avot 4.2, “one mitzvah leads to another”. Pay it Forward!!! I always thought the ripple effect of doing good for others (sometimes rather than always "paying back") was so beautiful and remember when it was "a thing to do" at Starbucks around the holidays. It made everyone happy (except maybe the people that worked at Starbucks and were confused). As a Rabbi that was one of these strangers in the show sang “Oseh Shalom Bimromav, Hu Ya’aseh Shalom Aleinu," -Maker of peace in His high places, may He make peace for us. [Ironically, it is common to hear the first word “oseh” pronounced like "oh say" (the first words of the American National Anthem)!]

  • "HOLE IN THE ROCK"

    23 février, États Unis ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

The next morning after going on a great walk with Lee we ate and went the HOLE IN THE ROCK. Yes, that's what's its called. "Hole-in-the-Rock", a very popular natural lookout in Phoenix. It is located in Phoenix's Papago Park and is a natural sandstone formation featuring a large opening that provides great views of the city skyline and desert. We walked up and had a fun time taking photos from every angle (here is a sampling of them).En savoir plus

  • Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) Phoenix (1 of 4)

    23 février, États Unis ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

Most of the day was enjoyed exploring MIM, a one of a kind museum. We were there once before and still enjoyed many hours there again. As Lee said, "it is a wonderful place, why aren't we members!!" Of course, maybe because it's a 6 hour drive from home to Phoenix.

MIM ia the world's largest museum of musical instruments, featuring over 15,000 instruments from nearly 200 countries. Every country is represented with local instruments and descriptions as well as video of locals playing them. There are some incredibly rare and valuable instruments that are not seen anywhere out of their local communities around the world. We took over 400 photos (and that was just a small sampling of every instrument) here but of course we only are posting 100 here.

  • MIM (4 of 4)

    23 février, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

See the video of the APOLONIA. "Apollonia" is a massive, historic 1926 Dutch Decap dance organ featured at the MIM. Weighing over two tons, this mechanical instrument includes accordions, saxophones, pipes, and drums. In its day, it was cheaper than an orchestra so it was shipped from venue to venue for occasions to play and would have to arrive in parts and be put together each time. "Apollonia" is the female form of "Apollo," the Greek god of the sun and music. During its working life, this organ was owned by the firm Gebroeders M. & G.
Teugels, which provided organs for the popular circuit of dance halls and traveling shows. It remained in Teugels's collection until the mid-198os, when it was imported into the United States by an American collector.

On the way back to Micheles, she drove us through Old Town Scottsdale, which is always a fun little town with great restaurants (we didn't eat here tis time but on out last visit we had a great dinner here). Tonight we decided to go back to Michele & Chris' for a fabulous BBQ as we watched sunset.

  • Tempe, AZ for a TREAT!

    24 février, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

After a morning with Cindy & John at their house to continue catching up (they had just come back from the Olympics in Milan and Cortina) and for them to get to know Lee even better (they had met sailing in Newport last year).

Then, through extensive research Karen found a real treat for us back in Tempe for a stop on the way home. We stopped at CRISPY CONES. You might say, what's so special about an ice cream cone to research and come here. Well, this is the same concoction and background as where the creation first came from HUNGARY and later adopted in PRAGUE. Yes, we had it there and enjoyed it again. For the detailed explanation check our Prague footprints where we really had the original experience.

  • Back in Newport Beach for Pickleball

    25 février, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Lee & I played pickleball with some of my old friends from Newport Beach that knew Lee and I always enjoy playing with. It is a large group that still plays M,W,F and another that play T,Th. I rarely play with these groups anymore but when Im in the area they always invite me to join in for the day. Some wonderful friends! Don't miss the VIDEOS!!!

Next, I went to my monthly sailing club meeting. This month I filled in for Laura and attempted to take minutes at the Board Meeting, the Training Session and then at the General Membership Meeting. I never appreciated what a hard job it is to take notes that are very detailed and accurate and then transcribe them for the membership. WOW!
