  • Hmmm...Kemo Sabe...

    24. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Great boat ride... but we walked over a mile from Meirengen in the heat wave to get to Aare Gorge and then walked another mile and a half only to find out we could have taken the train and walked 25 yards to get there. Half way there I had to dunk my head in a fountain. Here are more boat pics. Gorge pics to come.Læs mere

  • The narrow canyon of the Aare River

    24. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

After arriving in Brienz and departing the boat, we saw a train for Meiringen was leaving in two minutes, so we spontaneously jumped onboard. Then we saw that we were close to the Aare River gorge. Close a relative... it actually was about an hour walk in the heat. Finally we were there, and we trekked through a blissfully cool tunnel carved in stone for the next two hours. Along the way, we walked unto platforms suspended about the river, grateful for the respite given between the canyon walls. At the end, we trekked again down a hillside in the 95 degree heat. At the bottom, there was actually a metal door that opened only when the train arrived. This little important piece of information cost us dearly in the heat of the previous hours. We were actually about two minutes from this gorge by train when we started walking. The funny thing is I said to Tim, “Let’s have an easy lake day!” Sixteen hours later we have arrived home. Whew!Læs mere

  • Maybe it was revenge...

    25. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

It occurred to me that perhaps my paragliding instructor suggested this :easy waterfall hike" in the woods as revenge for ruining his perfect take off stats. Or maybe it was that at several thousand feet in the air, everything looked a lot flatter. For we climbed straight up the road and then through a "short cut" through a farmer's field which was straight up, and then through the woods straight up. Among the way Tim acquired a hiking partner of the feline variety. We left the cat behind after crossing through a cow meadow, but then upon our return(we gave up before the falls as we had been taking that short hike for two hours), here came the cat up the trail to join us for the hike out. Then we met a lovely Swiss couple on holiday who invited us to their home in the mountains for coffee and homemade bread. We were told by our hosts, Andy and Marianne of Zurich, that a "short hike" to the Swiss starts a one hour. Good to know since our total hiking time was over three hours... in the heat.Læs mere

  • The guy in the pictures

    25. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Ever notice how Tim is in so many pictures? It's because he is always ahead of me and gets to rest while he waits. He was a real comedian on the trail today. Coming down on the rocky trail from the woods, he cautioned me to move slowly. "If either of us breaks and ankle, neither of us can carry the other. "

When we were crossing the dangerous cow meadow, I asked him what would happen if I had a heart attack. His answer, "I would roll you down the hill. " Yes, it's THAT steep. And they still mow the lawn!

I am so glad the only cat we have seen in Lauterbrunnen loved Tim so much.

  • Don't believe the estimated hiking time!

    26. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Last night violent thunderstorms struck in the valley in the dark of night sending rain and hail but little relief from the heat. But this morning, the air was crisp and clear, we we headed towards a waterfall that looms far in the distance in view from our home. A bus from our home took us to the end of the valley and then we hiked for, well, forever, always telling ourselves “just one more bend.” Two hours later we made an executive decision to turn around. Here is the start of our day.Læs mere

  • Downhill...downhill is better!

    26. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Tolkien walked to the back of this valley at the age of 19. Coming around the corner to this view, it is not hard to imagine how these waterfalls at the end of the valley inspired the Elven kingdom. Just magical!Læs mere

  • Free afternoon? No problem.

    26. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

After a quick lunch, we took that ten pound box of winter clothing and mailed it back to myself in the states... since it was 95 degrees again. Then to escape the heat, we had this grand plan we would ride a train to the lake and then to the high mountains. Surprise! It was hotter there. So we caught another train back to the end of our little valley and the start of our morning walk. There is a hotel and restaurant in this out if the way place, and we sat outside in the gathering clouds. Wow! Best food I have ever eaten...no joke. Then we hiked home in a gentle rain from there on a new part of the trail by our home. Found another beautiful waterfall tucked away by the trail. I don't normally post pictures of food, but this homemade pesto was unbelievable. Now it is thundering and pouring, coming off the earth. Good night all!Læs mere

  • American ingenuity at work...

    27. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

Well, after two plus hours of straight uphill, we decided to make use of the excellent transportation system by only walking downhill today. We bussed to Lauterbrunnen, a teeming metropolis of 2,500 people and the nearest city, and then walked to a city whose name we can’t pronounce along the River Aare, which flows down the valley through a canyon to Interlaken and Lake Brienz. Once arriving at our destination 90 minutes later, a train pulled up within five minutes to take us uphill back to Lauterbrunnen. We found a local restaurant for lunch and noticed that tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Stechelberg, which is a short walk from here, the yodeling club is having a performance. What’s not to love about that? Tonight we will take a cable car to Mürren which rests on a cliff above us, and have gelato and watch the sun go down...or maybe lightening, since thunderstorms are predicted!Læs mere

  • About those clothes headed to the US...

    27. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

After a quick lunch at home we dragged ourselves out the door this afternoon walking to a bus stop via our trail and then heading up on two cable cars to Murren to watch the sun set. Joke was on us. You can see from the progression of pictures that the sky lowered and then the wind and rain came in with a 20 degree temperature drop. Change in plans! We were in shorts and tshirts. Caught a train in the other direction and took a cable back to Lauterbrunnen. Best thing about the rain disaster was meeting Jayde and Steve, from New Zealand and Australia who are currently vacationing from Hong Kong, where he teaches school. We may have them housesit for us next summer as they want to come to the Pacific Northwest for more adventure. You would love them!Læs mere

  • The pace has infected us...

    28. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

At some point yesterday, a grand scheme was hatched to visit a place known for its beauty and cultural significance in a nearby town. But at 2 am, I awoke and realized that with only a few days left I cannot leave this valley. Our life here happens at walking speed, except for our few failed attempts to go to a big city of say, you know, 5000 people. When we do ride the bus, it is only to Lauterbrunnen, which now feels like a trip to New York, though it has only 2500 people. Even the cog wheel trains into the mountains run on a gear.

Nothing is fast here in the valley. Nothing is supersized. I cook in our little Swiss sized kitchen with a mini refrigerator and no microwave. If you want bread, you can go to the camping store across the road and order it to be delivered fresh the next day. Across the street, the farmer sells the fresh milk he gets from the cows we visit every day.

I am already anxious about re- entry. Usually as we approach the end of a vacation, I am anxious to come home. This is the first place I have ever been where I don't want to leave. I told Tim before we left that my greatest fear in coming here was not of the paraglider but that I would never want to leave. That fear had been realized. I am living in the Elven kingdom here.

So today, as I write this to you with tears I can't explain, I decided to send you pictures of our home away from home.

You, our friends, our family, are what calls us back to our abode... but in my heart, this is the only home I will ever know ... it took a lifetime to find it.

  • Just kidding...

    28. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

100% rain means 100% punishing rain in the valley, so we took that train to Spietz in the end and found our way to the castle and the church there... accidentally of course.

  • A great day to be a duck!

    28. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

A fresh chicken dog and gelato and we are on our way on an historic paddlewheeler on our way to the caves. The video is of the actual engine at work. In one picture, you can see the person steering the boat guided by someone up above yelling into the tubes.Læs mere

  • Into the caves for shelter from the rain

    28. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

Probably a full month's rain fell today bringing the rivers to the banks and the waterfalls overflowing. We got off at the wrong stop from the boat and took a funicular to the top of a very high mountain from which there was no visibility. Then back down to a bus to the caves, which required a 30 minute walk in the pouring reason. Yep...you quessed it. Straight up and then a 20 minute wait in line in the pouring rain. Are you sensing a pattern here? Now we are home recovering before tomorrow. Our last full day in the valley. So sad.Læs mere

  • The last full day...

    29. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

The valley was full of clouds this morning, but we have access to the web cams, and at Schilthorn, the sun was shining. So we are ending the trip the way we started...above 11,000 feet staring at the vista that happens 360 degrees around us. We are without altitude sickness this time, and our pace is slower. We savor hot chocolate and fresh apple muffins in the cafe and slowly take it all in should we never pass this way again.Læs mere

  • The "Chicken Dance" is universal

    29. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 45 °F

Still hanging out at 11,000 feet enjoying the live music and the folks dancing with great joy. Some Americans taught the Chicken Dance to the crowd. Spontaneous dancing breaks out whenever a new group shows up. And Tim and I have been practicing our new skill learned from our new young friends from New Zealand and Australia...taking a panorama picture slowly so you can be in both parts!Læs mere

  • Thanks for traveling with us...

    29. juli 2019, Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Well, friends. All good things must come to an end. Here are our final pictures from our walk to Gimmelwald. We finished our day by going to Hotel Stechelberg, at the end of the valley, for homemade spaghetti, a Greek salad, and, finally, homemade Black Forest cake. Since the next bus would not be there for 40 minutes, we walked a final time in the cool of evening along the Aare River to our home. We said goodbye to all our favorite cows, and we reveled in the sound of the river as we debriefed what we learned during this adventure. Having you all with us gave us great joy. Can’t wait to see you again soon.

    Love you all...feeling blessed.
