Carrying cash for three countries! Having to read the notes to figure which country they are from definitely identifies us as the tourist.

  • Fingerprint Fail

    July 1, 2018 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Currently, Mark is in the bathroom dealing with our latest delay. We have just landed in Singapore a little late as our pilot was missing. No he wasn’t in the bar. No, he wasn’t reading the manual fir the new 330 plane we are here now though. But it appears we have forgotten a necessary item to pass through Singapore immigration (customs). Marks fingerprints. See, he has been tiling and his hands are still covered in apoxy. Yet, no fingerprints, no entry into the country. So story full circle... he is scrubbing the apoxy off his fingers in the bathroom. Can he scrub so hard he takes his fingerprint off?

  • Singapore in Seven Hours

    July 2, 2018 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

One day.... one city.... After consulting a former expat to Singapore, we followed his tourist recommendations.

    - little India
    - gardens by the Bay
    - Singapore flyer
    - SIA hop-on bus

Outcome?! Love, love, love Singapore. From the watermelon, lime and pineapple sorbet & truffle fries to the city that is so diverse from quarters of preserved culture and buildings to futuristic masterpieces.
    I’ll be back.

  • The Longest Night

    July 3, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

I have used the phrase “the longest night” in the past to metaphorically declare I have lost sleep. This time it is literal. The last sun I saw was around 7pm last night. It is now 12 noon and the sun has now caught us again. Sure, I’m using Singapore time whilst flying over Europe but, technically, it has been dark for 17 hours. That is one long eclipse.Read more

  • Paris

    July 4, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Being surprised is never overrated. Paris surprised me. I anticipated a few blocks of Parisian architecture with scattered palaces. What I’m revelling in is avenue after street of sandstone and shuttered buildings. It’s a ‘breakfast at tiffanys’ reality. A romantic overdose. I wondered if the tourist facade was going to falter; but it hasn’t. Paris is authentic in her unique cultural indulgences and the crush of tourists declares how rich and fun that is to see.

  • Paris Fun Bits

    July 4, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

    There is lots different here... just a few are;

~ hawkers and gypsies. If they can’t get eye contact, they leave you alone.
~ washrooms. Say toilets and you will offend. In Paris, you wash and obviously don’t wee... unless you agree ie oui oui 😆
~ street signs. Every corner has a plaque declaring the section number, if it’s an avenue, street or, boulevard and the name. Always know where you are; mostly.
~ dog walkers on bikes; who carry the dogs
~ riverside green boxes. They are rented to sell from turning the river into a cultural market in the evenings and weekends
~ no cars over 20 years old. So cars, bikes, quads are shared right off the street and left where you finish.
~ lots of smokers. Lots. Odd from an Aussie perspective.
~ traffic is insane. Only rule it appears is give way to your right and if you want to turn right, ignore the only rule. (Post vid next)

  • Where in Pari?

    July 4, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The minimalism and uniformity here feeds my “ducks in a row” tendency. One building, museum, palace & church though starts to look lots like the next. So, for my sake more than yours, a list of what we have seen. Read on at your own risk of chronic boredom.

~ Parc Monceau; as a green space, so very popular. Appartments opening on to this beautiful space says community. Appeal right there.
~ Arc de Triompe; so much bigger than I thought, traffic insane... huge round about with no lanes, and centre of avenues radiating like a star.
~ Grand Palais; glass roofed convention centre
~ I ‘obelisque; bit bigger than the one in Dungog
~ Place Vendôme; appartments where coco Chanel lived and where lady Di ate just before she was killed
~ Opera; unusually situated with no road front ... facing a corner.
~ Palais Royal; was a private palace with an amazing garden and a flat fountain.
~ Lourve; massive, in a walled area on the river
~ Notre Dame; on the city isle
    ~ Latin Quarter; students, University
~ Musée Orsay; think that was the train station turned into a museum
~ Invalides; beautiful golden domed topped hospital where Napoleon is buried (I think). Has a moat around it
~ military ecole; where training horses for a jumping event this week
~ Eiffel Tower; metal not stone. A change. Is bigger again than I thought. Was going to be taken down so mr Eiffel rented it to telecommunication companies.
~ Montparnasse Tower; a view if the city with brilliant perspective.

In Paris watching, mostly, Aussie dancers. I now know where Park Ave dancers graduate to Gabs. And not only the show but the street... it’s buzzing. It is 11pm and there are more people out than live in Dungog in just this one block. Thanks for the fun. 🤗Read more

  • Pari Finale

    July 5, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

Last day in Paris. It appears to be the day to stumble on churches. Monmatre is on the site where it is said, a priest had his head cut off, walked up the hill (mon) and washed his head. So massively impressive inside. The building has to be worship alone. Found a Catholic Church with iron buttresses. Again, so impressive for the size and detail. And another with the dome featured. Not to waste our last afternoon, we walked possibly 15-20km around the Lovre, the banks of the Seine watching barges and artists. We sat on love lock bridge where love is declared by putting a lock with you initials on the handrail. Walked past dozens if police holding automatic rifles ....can’t say i wasn’t shocked each time. Even explored a grocery shop and picked food past our comfort zone; except for the bananas and cider. It was almost 10pm before we got back to the hotel and it was still light. Was hoping to see Paris under lights at the river. Specific yes but coming away not at all disappointed. Thankyou Paris. You did not fail my extremely high expectations.Read more

  • Heading to Marks Roots

    July 6, 2018 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Not a gum tree in sight. Open flat fields with clumps of rural villages, not the random house here and there. The north of France continues its minimalistic theme. Residential architecture is quaint bordering poverty but so neat it is still very appealing. Busing from Paris to Amsterdam via Ghent in Belgium. Just a stones throw from Dunkirk (for those who know their history or have watched the movie). The scenery and my audio book “pride and prejudice” are making for a very contented trip ...and of course the company.Read more

  • Ghent. Belgium Gem

    July 6, 2018 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We pulled up to a small barge behind a dirty pub and I doubted any wow factor for this travel break between Paris and Amsterdam.

    I was wrong.

What we saw was spectacular. 7th century monasteries, courthouses covering crime down to Paris, canals that were their main roads and toilets overhanging canals as they were also “washrooms”. Bridges where beheadings were convenient the disposal of blood and heads and that took heads off if one traveled too fast underneath.

Paris was rebuilt two centuries ago. This architecture and culture existed thirteen centuries ago. Historic overload.

Oh. And Belgium is proud of their beer and chocolate. The beer is thick and wine like not thin and hopsy like Aussie stuff and the chocolate......oh!!! (Says coco in coco heaven)
