  • Osaka, Japan

    March 19, 2025, Philippine Sea ⋅ 🌬 45 °F

We are finally visiting the Osaka Castle! We met our guide outside in the freezing weather. Possibility of snow! It was worth it. Our guide gave us a detailed history lesson of the emperors, shoguns and how the castles were a part of this history. Hot tub after. Leaving Osaka for Hiroshima.Read more

  • Hiroshima, Japan

    March 20, 2025, Philippine Sea ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

Hiroshima was largely destroyed by an atomic bomb during WWII. Today it has been rebuilt into a surprisingly large modern city. Our tour started at the Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine, progressed to Hiroshima Castle and its moat and continued to the ruins of Genbaku Dome, one of the few buildings left standing near ground zero. Near this building we visited the Peace Memorial for a profound discussion around nuclear weapons.Read more

  • Nagasaki, Japan

    March 22, 2025 in South Korea ⋅ 🌬 63 °F

The two cities couldn’t be more different from one another. While both suffered an atomic bomb attack within days of one another, the city of Hiroshima is flat while Nagaski is very hilly. Even the Peace Memorials are very different. We toured the Peace Park here and the Atomic Bomb Museum before boarding the “slope car” (basically a funicular/monorail) to the top of Mt. Inasa.Read more

  • Jeju Island, South Korea

    March 23, 2025, East China Sea ⋅ 🌬 64 °F

Paul explored Jeju Island South Korea on his own while I nursed the end of a bad cold. Jeju Island is a popular tourist destination in South Korea, known for its beaches, lava tubes and other volcanic rock formations. He learned about the women who free dive (haenyeod divers) for abalone, sea urchins, seaweed and conch, diving for as long as 3 minutes! They also visited the botanical gardens, waterfalls and had a great lunch.Read more

  • Kagoshima, Japan

    March 24, 2025, Philippine Sea ⋅ 🌬 68 °F

Kagoshima is a seaside city known for its location near Sakurajima, Japan’s most active volcano. Apparently it erupts nearly every day, but we did not see it. We visited an historical garden and home of the Shimadzu clan at Sengan-en ( ISO) Garden, an observatory overlooking the city and a statue of Saigo Takamori, the last samurai. We visited the Museum of the Meiji Restoration, a period that restored power to the emperor and eliminated samurai governance. We found the people of Kagashima to be very enthusiastic and friendly towards us and concluded our visit with a great musical sendoff.Read more

  • Seoul, So. Korea (day one)

    March 28, 2025 in South Korea ⋅ ☀️ 43 °F

Our guide, Paul, picked us up for our Seoul exploration in his very nice car. Quite a luxury! It was cold to start but we loved seeing Jogyesa Temple!

  • Seoul, So. Korea (day two)

    March 29, 2025 in South Korea ⋅ ☀️ 41 °F

With snow flakes outside and 35 degree temperatures, we decided an extended brunch was a much better idea than touring the castle. Afterwards, we took the subway to the National Museum of Korea; what an incredible experience! This is a world class museum! Later we attended a funny, slapstick play at the Nanta Theatre and had some delicious local food around the corner from our hotel. A good day.Read more

  • Seoul, So. Korea (day three)

    March 30, 2025 in South Korea ⋅ ⛅ 43 °F

Another cold day complete with snow flurries! We decided to visit the Korean War Museum and then the Dongdaemum Design Place (DDP), a futuristic building designed by Zaha Hadid, a world class woman architect. It very much reminded us of the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao, Spain.Read more

  • Seoul, So. Korea (day four)

    March 31, 2025 in South Korea ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Today was gorgeous after all the cold. We started our tour with the changing of the Royal Guard at Gyeongbokgung Castle. It was most impressive. After visiting the castle, we drove to Bukchon Hanok Village for a very crowded but charming walk through the well preserved homes. Next, we drove by the Blue House again and climbed a large hill where we were treated to a fantastic view of Seoul. The final stop on tour was at the nation’s first market, the Gwangjang Market. We wish we had stayed but rushed to a boat ride that we never took. However we saw some nice night shots at the waterfront.Read more

  • Kanazawa, Japan

    April 5, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Finally the weather was nice, blue skies, good temps. We boarded our bus for a short ride to the Kenrokuen Gardens and Kanazawa Castle. Our guide promised the best cherry blossoms ever and, with over 8,000 trees, she should be believed. She was 100% correct! We thought nothing could top Jeju Island, but Kanazawa did. Between the gorgeous gardens and the castle with its moats, we were completely mesmerized! And then, on to the wonderful Omichi Market. Great day!Read more

  • Akita,Japan

    April 6, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Akita is known for its snow, its beautiful women and the Akita dog. Also, rice products from its rice fields and the Namahage powerful deities that live on the mountain (trolls). We visited the Namahuge Museum where we saw terrified children being scared by these deities/trolls who chase away bad luck and evil spirits. Next, we experienced their loud stomps and loud angry voices in a performance that captured their annual visits. Next we were treated to a 360 degree view of the surrounding area.Read more

  • Sapporo (Otaru), Japan

    April 7, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

What a gorgeous sail into Otaru this morning. Snow capped mountains and sparkling water. You would think you were in Alaska. Sapporo was the site of the 1972 Winter Olympics and you can still see the ski trails and jumps today. While we stayed in Otaru (Sapporo was too far to visit comfortably), we still saw the beauty of this area. Also, still snow in places! We walked around town, saw the Otaru Canal and then visited the Aoyona Villa. Anniversary dinner at Le Bistro onboard. Another nice day!Read more

  • Hakodate, Japan

    April 8, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Hakodate was one of the first ports to open after Japan ended its 200 years of isolation through the Kanagawa Treaty in 1854. Today we explored the area, starting with the market in the Motomochi District. Just when you think you’ve seen enough markets already, we were introduced to all kinds of live seafood, from giant crabs, to squid that you fish from a tank, to a gigantic octopus! 🐙 Yikes! Next, we visited a religious part of town, with Buddhist shrine, Catholic, Episcopal and Russian Orthodox churches. Goryokaku Tower and finally the Hakodate Magistrate’s office.Read more

  • Shimizu, Japan (part two)

    April 10, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Got up super early to see Mt. Fuji. Really hazy and only slightly better than last time (bad). As the morning progressed, the view kept improving. It really is a magnificent mountain, elegant and stunning. First we traveled to the Fuji Takasago Sake Brewery, founded in 1831 where we tasted sake and rice wines made from the crystal clear water from Mt. Fuji. They were delicious. Next we visited the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center, named a world heritage site by UNESCO, both for its exhibits and the stratovolcano that is Mt. Fuji. There is no question that the highlight today was the spectacular view of this mountain.Read more

  • Tokushima, Japan

    April 11, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

A very special visit to two of the 88 temples on a 750 mile circular pilgrimage route through the Shikoku Mountains. On our ride, we saw many rice fields having just been planted or were about to be planted. The first temple, Tairyu-ji, was founded by Kobo Daishi, a monk and poet responsible for the creation of the Shigon school of Buddism. We visited Tairyu-ji temple via Japan’s longest ropeway gondola. We saw our first pilgrims today. There was a spiritual quality to this temple, high in the mountains with 105 steps leading to the temple. Then we visited Byodo-ji Temple in a neighborhood setting. This was also ethereal and beautiful in a simple way. We saw many pilgrims but were disappointed to see them hop into a van for their next stop. One pilgrim even had shiny gold shoes, somehow not appropriate for treking!Read more

  • Kochi, Japan

    April 12, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Sometimes it’s good to have no plans. We took a taxi to the Kochi Prefectoral Makino Botanical Garden. Driving there was a highlight, up a hill on the narrow road. We passed a Tori gate to a shrine and a small village area. Finally we arrived. Tomitaro Makino, known as the father of Japanese botany was its founder. Everything was labelled. Gorgeous greenhouse, filled with tropical plants and orchids. After our visit, we taxied to the Kochi castle and then back to our ship.Read more

  • Nagoya, Japan

    April 13, 2025 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

100% rain and wind all day long. Visiting 2 museums was the best choice for today. We started at Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. Sakichi Toyoda first perfected textile production because weaving in the traditional way was very hard for his mother. Auto manufacturing came next to son, Kiichiro. This museum with its detailed story was fascinating. Particularly loved the automobile portion. Next we visited the Noritake Museum with its beautiful heritage of china and porcelain.Read more

Disembarked Norwegian Spirit after a really good itinerary around Japan. Today is a Tokyo day as we stayed at the Hilton Tokyo Bay which is at the Disney Resort. We recommend only staying here if you have children with you. They have excellent ice cream for breakfast. We visited a nice park, took the subway in town, had a real sushi experience and ended with an amazing Japanese meal.Read more

  • Kauai, Hawaii, USA

    Apr 18–24, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Making our way back home, via beautiful Kauai, the Garden Island. A gorgeous, laid back, rugged island. Picked out a hot red convertible and hit the road. First two nights dinner on Kauai was at our favorite, Merriman’s Kauai. We took a road trip to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, stopping by the largest coffee grower in the country, Kauai Coffee. The canyon was spectacular and so was our road adventure. Dinner at Roy Yamaguchi’s Eating House 1849 Kauai. More exploring on our next footprint.Read more

Shaka Guide gave us excellent guidance, tour ideas and even Hawaiian background music. We used it for our Waimea and Na Pali tour on the first day; on the second day we followed the North Shore Kauai Driving Tour. Wednesday we stayed closer to our home base in Poipu, exploring this beautiful area. We were particularly charmed by Shipwreck Beach around the corner from our place. Thursday was our last day but our flight wasn’t until 8:15 pm so we continued to explore as we focused on waterfalls.Read more
