Sunday was Election Day here in Costa Rica. The funny thing is when Sheryl and I were here in 1994, the same candidate who won that election was leading the polls for Sunday’s election. In between he was brought up on charges of corruption and lived in Europe for 10 years. José Maria Figueres of the Liberation National party is kind of centrist. There were a whooping 27 candidates for president!!! The top two will be in a runoff in April.

Jensy, my Tica Mamá, voted for the Unidad Social Christiana candidate Lineth Saborio. She is the ex Vice President and had a good chance of getting in the runoff. I am guessing she is right of center but not too right. We had been watching the news all morning on Sunday. Reporters were all over the country interviewing voters, candidates, and especially sharing stories about those who are old, with disabilities, and interesting stories about where and how they vote.

The process is very controlled - in a good way. Everyone in line washes their hands before entering the building. There they have posted voter roll lists to see which room you go to to vote. Typically they are in schools and community centers. It is Sunday so… this is possible. You show your ID card and mark your two ballots - one for president and the other for your representative in Congress. With very, very few exceptions everyone is wearing their masks properly. It seems rather orderly.

Interestingly, you can’t buy alcohol the day before an election. They want you sober and ready to vote. I’m not sure that it makes much of a difference. Everyone can stock up on Friday…

Jensy tells me and it was true in 1994 that the country normally has a party atmosphere for the weekend of voting. Flags fly out car windows, on buildings, and on street corners. There is lots of music and honking horns. It is fun! It is much more subdued with the pandemic now. Polls are open 6am to 6pm.

After visiting the polling place in town and chatting with some of the campaigners, I strolled back home to discover that the cough Manuel had was actually Covid. Manuel went to the gym on Thursday (with an appointment and all masked up) - that is how they think he got it. Luckily, (sort of - he is good company) I hadn’t spent any time with him on Thursday as he was at the gym and in his room working on Friday all day and stayed there nursing his “cold”. Jensy was right on it. Her ex is a doctor so was able to get him tested and medicine right away.

Mostly I was not really that worried. I hadn’t had any symptoms and had tested myself with my handy home test kits that I purchase in December for this occasion. It was negative. So… here I am in my room in quarantine avoiding Jensy and Manuel and school. Honestly, it isn’t all that bad. I have a lovely room with a nice breezy window, my pantuflas (slippers) and my iPad for entertainment. It also let me translate my loooong Monteverde post into Spanish. It needs correcting, but I’m enjoying the hard work.

My school jumped on it too getting me a test and arranging for me to have my class online. The new test was negative so I can return to classes tomorrow (Wednesday) but will need to keep in my room until Thursday. Officially Manuel is out of quarantine on Wednesday but can’t go anywhere until after Saturday. He is fine. After a nasty cough for a couple days, he was up late last night chatting with his friends by phone/video. Ah youth.

El Día de Las Elecciones y COVID en la Casa

El domingo era el día de las elecciones en Costa Rica. La cosa graciosa era que cuando Sheryl y yo estábamos aquí en 1994, el mismo candidato que ganó esta elección tiene lo más puntos en las encuestas para la elección ahora. Entre la primera elección y ahora, él fue acusado de corrupción y vivía en Europa por 10 años. José María Figueres del partido de liberación es un centrista. ¡Había un gran número de candidatos (27) para la posición del presidente! Los dos candidatos con lo más seguidores participarán en otro día de la elección en abril.

Jensy, mi mama Tica, votó por Lineth Saborio, del partido Unidad Social Chirstiana. Ella es la ex-vicepresidente y había una buena posibilidad para ganar suficiente votos para subir a la elección en abril. Estoy adivinando que ella es a la derecha del centro, pero no demasiado a la derecha. Habíamos estado mirando las noticias toda la mañana de domingo. Los periodistas estaban alrededor del país entrevistando votantes, candidatos, compartiendo historias sobre los ancianos, personas con discapacidades, e historias interesantes sobre dónde y cómo votan.

El proceso es muy controlado – en una manera buena. Todos haciendo cola limpian sus manos antes de entrar al edificio. En el lugar, hay listas de votantes en las paredes para saber cuál oficina necesita ir para votar. Normalmente, está en las escuelas o centros de la comunidad. Es domingo, entonces es posible. Hay que mostrar su tarjeta de identificación y marcar dos cedulas de votación – una para el presidente, y la otra para el representante del congreso. Con muy, muy menos excepciones, todos usan sus mascarillas bien. Se parece muy ordenado.

Curiosamente, no se puede comprar alcohol el día antes de la elección. Te quiere que estés sobrio y lista para votar. No estoy seguro de que haga una diferencia. Todos pueden comprarlo el viernes…

Jensy me dice y era la verdad en 1994 que normalmente, el país tiene un ambiente feliz durante el fin de semana de la elección. Banderas vuelan de las ventanas de los carros, edificios, y las escenas de las calles. Hay mucha música y cláxones ruidosos. ¡Es divertido! Ahora es más tranquilo con la pandemia. Las urnas abren de 6am a 6pm.

Después de que visitaba las urnas en el pueblo y charlaba con algunos de los activistas, caminé a mi casa y descubrí que la tos que Manuel tenía era, en realidad, COVID. Manuel había ido al gimnasio el jueves (con una cita y con su mascarilla) – este es cómo pensaron que lo consiguió. Por suerte, (en cierto modo – él es muy agradable) yo no pasé ningún tiempo con él el jueves cuando fue al gimnasio y el viernes cuando él trabajó todo el día en su habitación y atendió su “resfriado.” Jensy cuidó inmediatamente. Su ex-esposo es un médico así que podía obtener una prueba y medicina pronto.

De hecho, no estaba muy preocupada. No había tenido ningunos síntomas y tomé una prueba con mi prueba paquete que compré en diciembre para este tipo de ocasión. Era negativa. Entonces… estoy aquí en mi habitación en cuarentena evitando Jensy y Manuel y la escuela. Honestamente, no está muy malo. Tengo una habitación bonita con una ventana ventosa, mis pantuflas, y mi iPad para entretenimiento. También, me dejó traducir mi historia larga sobre Monteverde a español. Necesita correcciones, pero estoy desfrutando el trabajo duro.

Mi escuela arregló una prueba y clases en línea. La prueba nueva fue negativa, entonces puedo regresar a mis clases mañana (el miércoles), pero necesitaré mantener una distancia de Manuel y Jensy desde el jueves. Oficialmente, Manuel podrá salir de cuarentena el miércoles, pero no podrá ir algún lugar desde después del sábado. Él está bien. Después de una tos terrible por un par de días, él se quedó despierto hasta tarde anoche chateando con sus amigos por teléfono y video. ¡Ah jóvenes!Read more
