      Kroatien I - Zagreb

      Zagreb H3 Trail #2355

      7 de marzo de 2020, Croacia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Awesome trail today here in Croatia. Fun pack of about 15 stalwart hashers on a super shiggy trail through the mountains. Would have been better if it were about 15-20 degrees warmer (F or C). Was the coldest trail I have run on this excursion, but well worth it with 9 Kms of shiggy trails through the mountains on bike paths. So much fun. https://www.relive.cc/view/vrqodyNpyyvLeer más

      Explore Dubrovnik

      30 de septiembre de 2023, Croacia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

OAT has picked hotels that are close to the center of the old city or point of interest for each night. I like the idea, but it can make for some interesting experiences like older hotels. OK!!!

This morning, we explored the old city of Dubrovnik (was a city-state from 1358 to 1808) and heard about the history from a local guide. Beautiful walled city (about a mile walk on top of the wall) with old buildings and setting.

It is hard to comprehend that this old city was subjected to major damage during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s from artillery bombardment. Repair work continues through UNESCO. Our travel company, Grand Circle Travel, has a foundation that also contributes to this effort.

      Plitvice to Zagreb (NYE)

      31 de diciembre de 2023, Croacia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      Hello last day of 2023!

We only had a two hour drive from Plitvice to Zagreb today so decided to break up the journey with a stopover in Karlovac. Apart from a nice coffee shop there is absolutely nothing to recommend it!

Being New Year's Eve and every man and his dog came to Zagreb + our accommodation is close to the action, parking was a bit of an issue. We eventually found a garage about 1.3km away, and made our way to the accommodation, leaving all our gear in the car for now. Across the road from our apartment is a beer garden, so we headed over there for a sausage and a beer, mainly because it was close, but also because there was a life-sized statue of Nick Cave at the entrance, which was just a little bit random!

Due to the sheer number of people still pouring into the city, we decided to leave our cars where they were and walked back to the car park and then back again with all our suitcases. Given our late lunch, our last meal of 2023 was cheese and biscuits. Craig and I headed into the main square to see what NYE celebrations would look like which included a very loud DJ playing unintelligible doof doof music (I know I sound old) etc, so we headed home again. I had read before I went out that in May the Zagreb council had opted out of NYE fireworks. Locals evidently had not because there was random explosions happening all night, included some just outside our apartment. And at midnight I heard the main fireworks display, so the council obviously had a change of heart.

I also managed to slip in one final injury just two hours before midnight trying to work out how Sam Kerr can jump so high as per a photo I just looked at. In attempting this spectacular recreation, I forgot I was wearing socks on a polished timber floor. Ouch from my wrist. The owner of the apartment had left us a bottle of liqueur. Not saying if the two things are related...

      Rehearsal Dinner

      19 de marzo, Croacia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Excitement builds! A morning drive into Arezzo (40 mins) for last minute purchases and a delicious croissant filled with pistachio cream! More of Arezzo on Friday./Saturday. Back to the villa to prep for tonight's catered pizza party for all 32 wedding attendees.
A wonderful evening and so much fun with the trivia quiz about Matt & Talia. Just a little pressure for the parents and their memories!

      Wedding day

      20 de marzo, Croacia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

The day dawned with clear blue skies and full on sunshine. Not too breezy. Simply perfect.
The caterers did a wonderful job of staging the villa; it was already perfect but the dining room was transformed with 100 pillar candles in glass jars, stunning greenery running the whole length of the dining table seating 32.
The florist brought in two massive urns full of olive branches, white roses, white ranunculas and blue centred anemones.
The emotional vows were exchanged on the upper balcony so as you watched the couple, their backdrop was the beautiful Tuscan countryside, sunshine lighting everywhere.
The newlyweds and parents went down the sweeping staircase to be showered with olive leaf confetti from friends and family above.
Most of the photos had been taken earlier so it was on with the cocktails and beautiful canapes on the front drive and entry porch.
Speeches were made prior to the four course meal so that everyone could relax & enjoy.
The evening was full of dancing, dancing, laughter and fun. The bride barely left the dance floor! Carriages arrived at 0100 and the villa residents gamely partied on until after 0200!
It was the most wonderful day. Pinch me!

      Upper and Lower Zagreb.

      11 de mayo, Croacia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

There are 2 main areas in central Zagreb. The upper town is the older town, the lower is newer but still old by Australian standards. We caught the supposed shortest (but very steep) funicular in the world to the old town and had time to see some of the attractions we just drove past yesterday. We walked back down through the old city gate to the old town. The city was buzzing today, lots of people out and about and musicians in different places. We ate lunch in one of the lovely parks and then later made our way back to our hotel for the next 2 nights.

Early this evening we met with our tour manager Marijo and the others in our group for an intro to the tour and Welcome Dinner. We have about 24 in our group.

      A picturesque Sunday drive.

      12 de mayo, Croacia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We skipped the walking tour of Zagreb this morning as we'd already been everywhere they were going, plus a bit more, over the past 2 days. We were able to catch a tram for about 30 minutes into one of the suburbs and attend church. As the tram took us past the main square we noticed a large stage had been set up. On the return trip crowds were gathering. We later learnt there was a concert and the main attraction was 28 y.o. Croatian, Marko Purišić aka 'Baby Lasagne'. He was the runner-up in the 2024 Eurovision last night. Apparently Ban Josip Jelačić Square completely filled with thousands of people of all ages.

This afternoon we were taken out of the city. Such a pretty countryside! We enjoyed lunch in a picturesque restaurant with magnificent views of the rolling, vine-clad hills and Veliki Tabor Castle! In the village of Kumrovec we visited the simple peasant house of the late Marshal Tito. The surrounding properties have been restored to represent the village life of 100 years ago.

We were surprised to see a large Harvey Norman store in the suburbs as we drive out of town!

      Birthday in Croatia

      18 de agosto de 2019, Croacia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

On the beginning of our trip we didn't know yet where we would be celebrating my birthday. And well, our need to leave Slovenia for their expensive prices brought us to Zagreb. Not bad, huh?

We took the opportunity to discover Croatia's capital with Joaco, a very nice Argentinean guy that we met the night before at the bus on our way to Croatia. We spent the day the three of us discovering the calm streets of Zagreb without a plan, enjoying and having a couple of beers to calm down the extreme heat.
A romantic dinner at night the 2 of us and a nice walk through the old city.

A break was needed so we decided to stay 3 days on the city to get some rest.

Thank you so much to all of you for all the birthday wishes ♡

      Étape 17 : Sosice - Zagreb

      2 de junio de 2022, Croacia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      Distance : 68km
