    Last Day at Ducks Inn

    May 18, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

Ducks booked all the golf in East Lothian (County) including The Renaissance (Scottish Open this year) Malcom Ducks's course. Room is fine and what you would expect from an inn that was built in 1638. This place is all about golf... you see people at the golf course that you'll see at breakfast or the bar at night. They have a great outside area, both front and back, for outdoor eating & drinking. Food was excellent, with a fresh breakfast in the morning. Jack loved all the fruit, (not so much the black pudding, haggis, or baked beans) he tried it but thought it was "bloody awful". The staff was very nice and helpful. When we came back from Dunbar with soaking rain gear they took our clothes to dry them in the furnace room (the room had a pulley system that lowered a rack that we drapped our clothes over.) Amazingly they were dry in the morning! They did our laundry and dryed it the same way. Our room had a 1/3 length glass door that swings in/out in the bathroom. Jack took the first shower but did not close the glass door to the top of the tub) water poured down onto the bathroom floor. I think Jack customized Malcom's ceiling. All around a good stay and super convenient with 9 courses within 10 minutes, and 22 within 25 minutes. Jack set his alarm for 1:30 a.m.to watch the Celtics & Miami, a true fan.Read more

    Renaissance Club

    May 18, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Rare Indeed! Aye, the wind is up today, a wee bit over 35 MPH. Home of the Scotish Open for next 5 years. The place was built in 2008, with new holes added in 2019 via a land swap with Murfield. Per the caddie, Muirfield thought they traded unbuildable land (environmental land), not only did they build on it but he cut down a forest to do it (replanted all the trees on a separate piece of land). We met the owner (US guy Jerry Susvadi) out front and in the resturant following the round. Nice guy, we looked out at the new holes and I mentioned the trees, he informed us that the ones on Murfields land were cut to open the view to the ocean...whether they like it or not...

Course is very good, firm fairways with views of the ocean. Very cool halfway house with free meat pies (I'm now in love with this place) with a 180 degree of the ocean. You can see the Fidra Light House in the distance. (The island of Fidrais reputed to have been the inspiration for the shape of Treasure Island in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. (His dad Thomas designed the lighthouse).

    The Jigger Inn

    May 18, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

On the 17th fairway, corner of the hotel. ( owned by Kohler ). The Jigger Inn dates back all the way to 1850's, when it was the Station Masters lodge for the St. Andrews train station (no longer in existence). We walked back to town and asked a local where we could "get something quick," he told us the best " chippies" were at Tail End. We ordered some chippies with salt and vinegar and had them sitting on a wall in town, a grand day!Read more

    The New Course

    May 19, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

Built in 1895 by old Tom Morris. Walked to the starter shack in 12 minutes and were on the first tee @ 6:45 a.m. We finished at 10:30 a.m. Great weather, light breeze. The Course was great with mounds of lovely greens that are well guarded, especially if you take an aggressive line. Breakfast at Tom Morris Bar & Grill. Jack gave the breakfast sandwich, with double meat, his top score of "very good". Following breakfast back to our room for a shower and to explore the town. As we walked back to the room, we met a greens- keeper, he asked us where we were playing and whe we told him Crail Craighead...he said in a thick Scottish accent "Fu'tin Bultal"...so we have that to look forward to.Read more

    Shandon House

    May 19, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

This 6 room B&B is in the perfect location . It's a 4 minute walk to the 1st tee and has a large car park (parking lot for you non-Scottish) outside. The 1st room was a wee bit small. The next room (we had to switch rooms due to pre- bookings) is bigger and has 3 beds ( Lucy & Ricky size) nice bathroom and is extremely clean. Stuart & Elizabeth are very nice, he (former banker) likes to talk a lot about the history of St. Andrews, all while she's trying to pull him away " let the boys be...they don't want to hear all this"...funny. We had dinner next door at Ziggy's (knock off of David Bowie) good burgers and fun place.Read more

    Crail Golfing Society "Balcomie"

    May 20, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Playing a double today, Balconie (the old course) in the AM and Craighead in the afternoon ( Gil Hanes design) at 3:20. Perfect weather in the AM but rain is coming. Course takes you on and around an outside loop, then inside and back up to the proshop on 12. You walk to the signature 13th, a long downhill par 3 at the life boat house...longer than it looks. After this hole you go past Constantine's Cave and play the 5 holes off the back of the Pro Shop.Read more

    Crail Golfing Society "Craighead"

    May 20, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Craighead is both the name of the course and area. Designed by Gil Hanes, difficult track, but if you play it a few times you can score. Long par 3's including #17 with a crazy green; I was over the green, (in photo) with a crazy tough shot coming back. Fun course to play, we liked it a lot. We finished the round in 3:32 minutes and as we were putting our clubs in the car it started to rain. We went downtown to the Golf Hotel & Bar, walked in and had 50 eyes on us (would appear they've not seen an out of towner in years), one and done. On the way back to St Andrews we stopped at KingsBarn...we went to the resturant and they asked us what group we were with, I told them we were meeting a group on the course. The hostess asked for the name (holding the tee sheet) and I went with Kevin O'Neal. She could not find a Kevin O'Neal so I replied "well he's on the course" she agreed to seat us. A close call.Read more

    The Castle Course

    May 21, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

The Castle Course ,designed by David McLay Kidd, was the final stop of our Scotland golf adventure. We arrived later in the morning to nice weather but gusty conditions. Jack warmed up on the driving range while Darren had to drive back to Crail after forgetting his towel (not a surprise). He came in on two wheels, took some quick swings at the range and then off around noon. The course setup was difficult with uneven terrain and long holes but the wind only made it that much more difficult. Darren played very well despite the gusty conditions while Jack was in his pocket on a couple of holes and ready to kill himself. After the round we enjoyed a nice dinner in the clubhouse overlooking the ninth hole and ocean. From there it was back to the town for one last night of exploring.Read more

    Last Night in St. Andrews

    May 21, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Above it all at the Rusacks. Jack pointed out that he found out where all the good looking women in Scotland were hiding. This place is really nice with a view of the entire 18th (tee to green) the R&A, out to the beach and Old Tom Morris' shop (across from the 18th green). We met a lot of really nice people, locals love the tourists, they are in heaven when you add a few pints, is there anything better? Finished it off with 3 scoops of ice cream, then off to bed, setting the alarm for 1:30, Celtics/Heat game 3.Read more
