    Driving to Munich

    March 21 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

    On Friday morning, we had a very healthy, all natural breakfast at Hildegard Naturhaus Hotel. Then we drove to Munich. Oh my! What a drive it was!!
    The hotel where we stayed is in the middle of nowhere, Austria. We were on roads so narrow that they looked like hiking routes rather than roads. The small towns we drove through were very close to the narrow, twisty roads. We felt certain we were the only tourists on this route. It was crazy, but also really beautiful.
    Once we got on the Autobahn, Brian decided to see how fast our little Peugeot could go. It was our favorite drive so far!

    Prehistoric Alpine Pile Dwellings, AT

    June 6, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    I'm going to make this write up a little meta. Some of you know, but others may not. Emily and David put in about 5 years of research into this trip. Many weekends of downtime choosing the next country alphabetically and then finding some way to partition the country (region, state, major cities, etc.), then looking for,

    * Things to do in ____
    * Best museums in ____
    * Best day trips from ____
    * Underrated attractions in ____
    * etc.

    Every item we recorded was then ranked: high, medium, low, and that process organically painted the route of our trip.

    One late arrival to our research radar was realizing the unesco.org website can be filtered by country. Then we began the arduous process of going through each of those. During that particular process, one item completely sucked Dave in for a few days:

    Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps
    https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1363/

    To be quite frank, this is not an "A lister" kind of item. It was just kind of nebulous. The fact that these sites are littered around Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland made this tough to categorize. There are "937 known archaeological pile-dwelling sites." To call it uninteresting would be a disservice, but to choose a single worthy destination was a monumental task and FOMO set in.

    Today we decided to do a day trip to Mondsee, Austria (which eluded our earlier research) from Salzburg. It was chosen because it was in the lakes district, and because it was the closest city on the lake and it was only a single bus trip away. After the destination was already set, and we were trying to come up with sights to see, I came across a small town museum attached to a church, that an exhibit on, and had artifacts from Pile Dwellings archeological sites from this very lake.

    I have to say, someone put some love in this museum. It was probably the best museum we've been in that didn't have a sentence of English. Even ignoring that it was still a very good museum.

    A good portion of this museum was dedicated to the church itself. Now remember, this was a mostly impromptu day trip. The church itself was famous for two things. The first we didn't even know until we read an English sign inside the church. This was the filming location for the beautiful wedding scene in the "Sound of Music."

    https://youtu.be/DIc6U0wbLJs

    That isn't the most astounding thing about this church. That back altar is famous for having, on clear display, the mummified remains of a local saint, Saint Konrade II. I must have missed that in the Sound of Music. See the accompanying post on "Lakes Region, Austria" for pictures.

    Actually, I didn't notice this in person, but when looking at my picture I noticed there are actually 5 mummies in the altar. Two of them can be seen in the original Sound of Music.

    Back to the Pile Dwellings
    The Pile Dwellings are pretty amazing. Some of them date back to 6000BC. To try and make it short (too late), the dwellings were all built near lakes and on Stilts or Piles. This was to protect these ancient structures from occasional flooding. The houses themselves were usually built on marshland, which in sure also served as predator protection. The marshes also served as a means to preserve the Piles, and other artifacts from the settlements. Thus we actually have a lot of evidence to tell us how these ancient humans lived in this part of the world.

    Hildegard Naturhaus Hotel

    March 21 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 37 °F

    We stayed in an unusual hotel in Mattighofen. There are not a ton of hotel options, and I found this one online. I almost canceled the booking when I found out that one of the wellness services they offer is "blood letting." This place is named after an ancient nun named Hildegard, and they follow her recipes for spelt bread and other natural remedies. The fresh made bread was incredible! They teach classes here in this ancient bread making art. They call their baker a "bread sommelier. "
    The gardens, pond, cottages, and mini horses made for a peaceful stay. I wish we had more time here to relax. (But I still do not want to sign up for blood-letting).

    KTM Motohall

    March 20 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

    We were able to check an item off of Brian's bucket list today: we got to tour the KTM Motorhall museum. It is dedicated to everything, KTM! The museum includes the history of the company, all sorts of design exhibits, many motorcycles you can hop on for photo ops, and, of course, KTM racing history. (Both Motocross and Moto GP) Brian was so happy. When I bought the tickets online, I also reserved a 10-minute ride on the race bike simulator. He could not wipe the smile off of his face.Read more

    Mondsee

    March 20 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

    On Thursday, we began our day by driving about 30 minutes north and east of Salzburg to Lake Mondsee. This is a resort area with several lakes at the base of the Alps. We had weather that was warm enough that we did not need our winter coats! We spent a wonderful morning just walking around this beautiful lake.
    There is a large church that chimes its bells quite often. Was it on the hour and half-hour? No. It was at 10:07, then at 10:39. Hmmmm. I'm not sure how they use it to tell time, but it certainly is loud and can be heard all over town.
    By 1pm, we hopped in the car to head to Mattighofen... the home of KTM motorcycles. We did not drive the Autobahn to get there. It was driving that was the closest to our Italian driving experiences as we've had. Brian loved it!

    Sunrise, Sound of Music and Strudel

    September 20, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    This morning, we rose to a beautiful morning in Salzburg. The view for the room was another painting.

    Into town to get on the Sound of Music Bus for a tour of some of the locations they filmed in 1964. Some beautiful locations narrated by an Aussie tour guide with a classic Australian sense of humour. Some beautiful scenery as we travelled around the town and into the countryside. Learnt that Salzburg was its own country for centuries and that Hollywood chucked its own spin on the Von Trapp family as usual but a great insight into the movie and actors that could have been the potential players.Read more

    Und wieder an den See (fast)

    September 2, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    Heute ging es für uns wieder weiter, aber bevor wir dem Hochkönig endgültig den Rücken gekehrt haben, ging es zum Abschied noch auf den Natrun - zur Abwechslung mit der Gondel, da diese in der Gästekarte inkludiert war. Das erste Mal Gondelfahren war ein Erlebnis für Sophie, und dann durfte sie auch noch den ganzen Weg nach oben zum Prinzensee laufen, bzw. über Wurzeln klettern und hüpfen. Der Blick vom See auf die umliegenden Berge war einmal mehr atemberaubend. Im Anschluss haben wir uns noch kurz gestärkt, bevor es an unseren nächsten und letzten Stop - den Mondsee, bzw. ganz in seine Nähe - ging. Jetzt wollen wir die letzten Tage noch so richtig genießen.Read more

    Beim Abendessen (im Nachbar-Hotel) gabs ein wirklich phänomenales Weißbier und nach Salat und Spaghetti noch Marillenknödel.
