    Day 76

    Nächstes Ziel - Südinsel

    Wir fuhren heute mit der Fähre von der Nordinsel zur Südinsel. Auf der Karte sieht es sehr nahe aus, aber wir sind 3 1/2 Stunden gefahren. Der Ausblick war phänomenal und der Wind im Rahmen, so dass ich die ganze Zeit draußen saß. Anschließend ging es mit dem Bus zu einem Gin- und Weintasting.
    Nach dem Tasting ging es zu einem Küstenstreifen, wo viele Seelöwen leben. Woran merkt man, dass man mit Menschen die gerade dem Teenageralter entwachsen sind reist? Der halbe Bus kreischt : “Seals, uhhh, wahhhh, seals, uhhh, wahhh, seals, uhhh, wahhh…” 🤣🤣🤣! Natürlich haben wir einen Fotostopp eingelegt. Weiter ging es zu einem Ausguck über unseren heutigen Schlafort Kaikōuna (ich liebe diesen Namen).
    Und der perfekte Ort , auf der einen Seite hohe Berge auf der anderen Seite das Meer 😍😍😍. Mit mega Sonnenuntergang und ihr werdet morgen sehen, auch Sonnenaufgang!    Read more

    Day 36–37

    Wilma wird aufgehübscht

    March 10 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    Nach einer nicht so besonders schönen Überfahrt auf die Südinsel, mussten und wollten wir uns mal wieder um unsere Wilma kümmern.

    Ein neuer Reifen musste her und wir wollten sie jetzt doch noch ein wenig aufhübschen. Gesagt - getan.
    Es wurden wieder ein paar Lädchen abgeklappert und dann ging es ans Werk.
    Die Küche sowie der Innenraum wurden gestrichen, die Decke neu gestaltet, neue Körbe angebracht und eine neue Matratze gab es auch noch. Der Reifen konnte glücklicherweise geflickt werden.

    Wir sind mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden und freuen uns auf die kommenden 51 Tage auf der Südinsel.    Read more

    Day 6

    Let the Roadtrip begin

    Heute Morgen sind wir aus dem Regen in den Sonnenschein los auf unseren Roadtrip einmal um die Südinsel gestartet.

    Unser erster Halt ist der schöne Whites Bay, an dem wir unsere erste Nacht im Van verbringen und morgen auch noch die angesagte Sonne genießen werden.🏖️

    Day 14–17

    Off the grid - 2 day hike hut-to-hut

    February 23 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    From the mountains in Makarora we went for a long car drive to Akaroa. This is a small village near Christchurch which used to be a French colony. Nowadays this mostly means great restaurants!! Good timing with arriving there on Stella's birthday so that we could celebrate this with a glass of bubbles and a nice dinner (indian European fusion). The next day we walked around in the village and also made sure to stock up and prep ourselves (mentally and physically) for the 2 day hike that we have planned. This hike entails in total 32km (first day 19km with 800m elevation gain, second day 12km with also around 800m elevation gain) and we stayed in 2 different mountain huts with no phone reach, sometimes (a bit) of elektricity and sleeping in bunk beds together with our other hiking buddies - a bit of an experience!
    The evening before the hike we were brought to our first hut; quite luxureous with a small kitchen and a semi separate (loft) room. The first day of hiking started of quite misty, cold and rainy so we unfortunately didnt have a nice view at the top and the descent through the (muddy) forrest was quite slippery. Luckely in the afternoon the sky cleared up and we could enjoy many nice views along the coast and also saw some seals! We arrived in our mountain hut were the shower was made from a tree, there was a little fireplace, and they also made a mini store (with fridge and stuff to buy for bbq!!) so we treated ourselves with a festive bbq meal with loads of protein and carbs :). The next day we started the hike early because the expected time should be around 5-7 hours and we also had a long car drive ahead of us (to blenheim, 6hours). Again, loads of amazing views and already sunny weather from the beginning! We actually made it within 3 hours so plenty of time to drive to Blenheim for a few days of wine tasting!     Havelock, Whites Bay & Marfells Beach

    Petit stop à Havelock (South cette fois ! Nous avions bossé à Havelock North dans l’île du Nord)
    La petite bourgade d’Havelock est la capitale mondiale de la moule verte ! Oui rien que ça !
    Équipés de nos bavoirs, nous avons donc décidé de les goûter en tant que bons gourmands que nous sommes.
    Thibaut a pris une sauce marinière classique et Julie une sauce au fromage bleu (ça se voit tant que ça que le fromage me manque ?)

    Bilan : elles sont plutôt bonnes mais tellement grandes et charnues qu’on a parfois l’impression de mâcher un morceau de steak ce qui en devient un peu écœurant sur la fin. Mais c’était un chouette repas.

    Nous sommes ensuite aller à Whites Bay, un joli campsite du Doc en bord de plage. Nous avons été surpris par la quantité de monde qui y séjournait !
    Nous avons décidé d’aller dormir plus loin, en traversant de magnifiques vignes du Canterbury pour rejoindre un autre campsite au bord d’une autre plage toute aussi jolie, mais qui était également bien rempli. Nous sommes en saison haute et il est rare de retrouver des endroits où nous sommes totalement seuls.    Read more

    Day 77

    Closing the loop at whites bay

    January 6 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    Zurück am Whites Bay Campground, wo ich bereits meine erste Nacht auf der Südinsel verbracht habe. Das Wetter ist zwar noch durchwachsen, doch der Himmel belohnt uns mit einer spektakulären Show – inklusive Regenbogen.

    In den nächsten zwei Tagen meint es das Wetter gut mit uns. Wir bleiben hier, genießen die Sonne, surfen und lesen. Ein perfekter Abschluss meiner Reise auf der Südinsel. Ich glaube, ich bin doch noch nicht bereit, Abschied zu nehmen.    Read more

    Day 300

    Noël en été

    Un sapin de Noël par ci, un Père Noël par là, ces décorations sont là pour nous rappeler la date du jour alors que nos cerveaux ont beaucoup de mal à comprendre quand nous sommes en short et petite robe et que les journées sont longues !

    La maison dans laquelle Maëva et Boris font du House sitting est vraiment magnifique et très agréable. Une super terrasse, un joli jardin, une cuisine spacieuse et toute équipée. Quel luxe quand on est habitués au van.
    Vini et Cheeka les chiens de la maison sont adorables également

    Au programme du 24 : récolte de pommes de terre du jardin, préparation des repas, promenade des chiens sur les hauteurs de Nelson et des jeux de société pour la soirée. Le soir c’était donc huîtres, saumon, samoussa de la Réunion, et poulet au four, Miam !
    Une bien belle soirée en bonne compagnie qui s’est terminée par de belles parties de Beer Pong !

    Le 25 on remet les couverts avec un gigot d’agneau. On aura des restes jusqu’au lendemain 😆 on s’est bien régalé en tout cas !
    Maëva a su nous préparer de délicieux plats : une vraie cordon bleue 🤩

    Au final on reste dans la maison avec les copains jusqu’au 27. Les deux chiens sont très joueurs et c’était la détente totale !
    Nous avons été très casaniers pour le coup mais qu’est-ce que ça fait du bien de se poser dans un si joli endroit et de simplement profiter.    Read more

    Day 16

    Marlborough wine tour

    Today we got pissed while having a guided tour through several of Marlboroughs finest Vineyards. We were on a bus with our guide Vic a couple from Canada and an annoying lady from SE London who was cycling the length of NZ.
    We started the day at 10 in the morning with the first glass of wine in the gardens at Nautilus estate, where we tasted some Pino Gris, Chardonnay, pino noir and new one to us called Albariño all of which were delicious but nothing jumped out at us as anything that we wanted to buy.
    We then moved on to Lawsons estate where we learned a bit more about the Marlborough wine region, and its different soils and weather which effects the tastes of the wine. We had a delicious Pink Pinot rose which we bought a bottle of.
    We then moved on to our lunch stop, and on the way we picked up another couple from Manchester. We went on to Saint Claire estate which was one of the first vineyards in Marlborough. We had a really tasty lunch Derry had the fish of the Day and Freya had a Lamb dish and more wines throughout the Lunch.
    The next vineyard was Freya’s and my Favourite. Gibson Bridge vineyard was run by a husband and wife duo who grow all their own grapes for their own wine. A small vineyard in comparison to the the others that we have been to. Both in their 70’s the husband tends to the vines and the grounds mostly by himself while his wife runs the cellerdoor and tasting rooms. The way they talked about how they set up and looked after the property showed in their wines- they were all delicious! They had even won loads of awards for the qualities of their wines. We ended up buying 2 bottles from them- a Pino Gris from 2024 and a bottle of their Gewürztraminer 2018 desert wine which after first sip we both turned to each other and said that we were getting a bottle.
    Our next stop was No1- method traditional- a winemaker from champagne who moved over and set up shop here making a sparkling wine in the traditional French champagne way. We weren’t too fussed with the sparkling wine we tasted there.
    Our last wine stop of the day was Whitehaven a large family run vineyard and winemaker. Here we had lots of delicious wines and came away with a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc.
    On the way back to the campsite the guide stopped at Makana boutique chocolate factory here we got to sample some really tasty chocolate and came away with a box of toffee macadamia brittle something or other.

    Yes that was a lot of vineyards and a lot of wine was consumed. It’s a good thing that we weren’t driving anywhere tonight.    Read more

    Day 13

    30 Monate - Hand in Hand 🫶🏻

    Um 6:45 waren wir wach und bereit für den nächsten Tag - es ging zum Abel Tasman Nationalpark. Unsere 11km lange Wanderung durch einen kleinen Teil des Nationalparks bescherte uns schöne Aussichten auf das Meer, schöne Strände und einen Muskelkater 🥾

    Als Mittagsprogramm haben wir und für eine Führung und Verkostung in Pic‘s Peanut Butter World entschieden🥜 Philipp strampelte anfangs am Rad, um uns die erste Verkostungsreihe in unser Behältnis herunterzulassen. Nach den Verkostungen der verschiedenen Sorten bakamen wir sogar ein Glas geschenkt 😍

    Auf dem Weg zu unserem Campingplatz machten wit nochmal Halt, um die Aussicht über Mahau Sound zu genießen 🏞️

    Für den Abschluss hat Philipp sich nochmal in die Dunkelheit begeben und einige Aufnahmen der Sterne geschossen. Das Ergebnis lässt sich sehen 🌌    Read more

  • Nieuw Zeeland 2024.

    Dolfijnen en wijnen.

    Half vijf, de wekker loopt af!! Het is koud, te weinig slaap en de goesting is ver zoek... Maar nog geen 2 uur later spelen we in de oceaan tussen tientallen dusky dophins, het was het allemaal waard! De oceaan is maar 10 graden maar hier voelen we niets van door onze swim suit en de excitement. Uiteindelijk ga ik 4x terug het water in, de rest 3x om te zwemmen met deze prachtige beestjes. Ik heb ooit op de buik van een dolfijn gezwommen op de Britse maagdeneilanden maar in het wild is alles toch veel spectaculairder dan in gevangenschap. Na onze swim with the dolphins varen we nog wat rond tussen echt super veel dolfijnen voor de laatste foto's en filmpjes. We varen in hetzelfde gebied als waar we gisteren zijn overgevlogen. Raar dus dat we gisteren zo weinig gezien hebben. Nog even ontbijten voor we een 4 à 5 tal uren moeten rijden naar Kaiteriteri. Onderweg rijden we terug door de wijngaarden. We stoppen even aan Spy Valley Wines voor een kleine tasting in het zonnetje met zicht op de wijngaard. We proeven enkele witte, een rode, een roséke en een schuimwijn. (Yves niet, die is onze bob.) Allemaal best lekker en we nemen een flesje wit en rosé mee. Gisteren had ik ons al een plekje geboekt op de 1ste rij van de camping met zicht op het strand. We hadden zin in bbq maar we mogen hier geen open vuur maken dus chef Arno maakt onze burgers dan maar in de pan. Het smaakt naar meer! Wat een fijne dag weeral.
