    Die neuen Bremsen waren zu stramm eingestellt und wurden deshalb heiß, also neuer Iveco-Besuch jetzt in Vila Real.
    Mal sehen ob es dann besser ist.

    Day 12

    Day 11: Wine Tour part 2

    March 22 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

    Next stop was lunch in Sabrosa for lunch and tastings of wine. We stopped at Casa dos Barros where we were served a delicious lunch of pork with mushroom risotto with endless wine.

    The winery was Colheita and they served us for our meal a white and red. I could not understand the server but both were blends. My new friend from Portugal and I were enjoying the red so we asked for a second bottle - well we fingered that too. A nice chocolate cake with tawny port was served - with espresso.

    We then went to taste the port in their cellars. The staff member was very engaging and was testing us on our knowledge but no answer stopped him serving us. Interesting the cellar had port in barrels from 1934. I did not know that for some ports, they blend multiple barrels and depending on the percentage used that is the age put in the label. Learned a lot.

    Drive back went fast as the guide and I talked about the true issues that Portugal is having related to homelessness and fires.    Read more

    Day 2

    Day 2: Porto to Pinhão

    February 28 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

    After only a few hours of sleep due to our room being between high school kids who were making noise until the early hours of the morning, we reluctantly got up and decided to explore Porto once again, focusing on areas we hadn’t yet discovered.

    Our first stop was the Porto Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace, both of which were incredibly detailed and beautiful—such a fascinating glimpse into the city’s history.

    Next, we wandered through the streets, stopping for coffee and croissants at a quaint café. As we continued, we stumbled upon a large police presence and curiosity led us to ask what was going on. It turned out the President of France was visiting, which explained the security, and there were even snippet on rooftops, adding an extra layer of intrigue to our day.

    Later, we boarded the train to Pinhão, where we’ll start our hike of the Douro Valley over the next four days. The journey was scenic, offering glimpses of the stunning landscape ahead.

    For dinner, we dined at the Douro Hotel, and the meal was outstanding. The flavors were rich, and the ingredients seemed so fresh—perfect fuel for the days of hiking ahead.

    Tag 64: Kontrastprogramm 🍇🍷⚓️

    Die zweite Nacht auf dem P&R-Platz im Randbezirk von Porto war wieder sehr gut und ich starte mit einem Besuch im Supermarkt um uns Brot und Croissant zu kaufen… ☺️ Aber?! Um kurz vor 9 ist Schlange stehen angesagt, denn hier öffnet der Supermarkt erst um 9 Uhr. Ganz ungewohnt. Aber nach 10 Minuten kann es losgehen und wir frühstücken entspannt. 😁

    Für heute gibt es einen ganz groben Plan:
    Dem Douro folgen —> Flüssen folgen wir einfach gern 😌

    Nach ca. einer Stunde von Porto aus den Fluss entlang halten wir an einem Gratis-Stellplatz. Nicht um hier zu übernachten, sondern um die Ver- und Entsorgungen zu erledigen und - das wichtigste - zu duschen! 😋 Das war nämlich dringend nötig. Die Dusche war kostenfrei und tatsächlich sehr angenehm. Durch diesen Stop sind wir somit wieder für einige Tage „unabhängig“ und können ganz entspannt auf Campingplätze verzichten. 🤭

    Nach dem Stop geht es noch ca. 2,5 Stunden weiter den Fluss entlang, bis wir unser Ziel für heute erreichen. Die Landschaft ist wunderschön, jede Kurve brachte etwas neues mit sich und die Touristen nehmen scheinbar auch andere Routen. 🥹 Somit genießen wir die Aussicht bei verschiedenen Fotostops und landen gegen Nachmittag auf dem Weingut eines Winzers.
    Hier haben wir viel mehr als erwartet: Toiletten, Duschen, Trinkwasser, Stellplatz und Weinführung - auf die freuen wir uns ganz besonders - alles „kostenfrei“. Wir werden uns natürlich mit „Käufen“ revanchieren🍷 🍇 🫒 Das Prinzip ist aber einfach toll und wird scheinbar nicht nur von uns gern angenommen, denn wir stehen auf dem Platz mit ca. 20 anderen Campern.

    Wie genießen hier die Sonne, grillen, schlendern durch die Weinreben und spielen. 😇 Zu gestern ist es wirklich ein absolutes Kontrastprogramm aber die Ruhe und wundervolle Natur dazu sind einfach herrlich und lässt uns den Großstadttrubel gut verarbeiten …    Read more

    Douro

    Nach einer 3-stündigen Fahrt sind wir im Tal des Douros mit seinen unzähligen Weinreben angekommen. Die erste Nacht haben wir mitten in den Reben verbracht. Am nächsten Tag machten wir auf einem Weingut eine Führung mit anschliessender Degustation. Schlafen werden wir heute auf einem anderen Weingut.Read more

    Day 8–9

    Quinta do Monte Travesso im Dourotal

    Nach ca 600km Fahrt mit teilweise starken Regenschauern Ankunft in der Weingegend Dourotal (sieht aus wie an der Mosel).
    Hoch ca 6km den Berg hinauf in die Pampa zur ausgesuchten Quinta de Monte Travesso. HUBERT mit Köbis kommt auch noch. Die Besitzerin empfiehlt uns ein Lokal 15 min zu Fuss.
    Sind erstaunt wie nobel es aussieht. Essen fürstlich mit Vor und Nachspeise mit vinho und Portwein und zahlen 30 Euro pro Person. Der Schwerpunkt ist tief beim zurücklaufen 😄😄😄    Read more

    Day 5

    Rolling Hills and lasting Memories

    March 3 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

    Today’s hike was a bit easier—only 14km, and all downhill! We started in Alijo and hiked through vineyards, passed some friendly dogs, and descended into Casal De Loivos.

    We stopped at a charming little café for pastries and water before heading to our hotel. We knew we’d arrive early, but the staff was kind enough and let us know we would be able to leave our bags, but when we arrived, everything was ready for us.

    The welcome we received felt like we were visiting a friend’s home—warm and personal. They gave us a tour, and welcome drink. The terrace overlooks the breathtaking Douro Valley, and honestly, no photo can capture the true beauty of what we’re seeing in person.

    We spent some time chatting outside until the rain began, then headed down the road to the D’Origem Olive Oil Museum and winery for a tasting! It was fascinating to learn about how they produced olive oil until 2001, and we had the chance to taste three of their wines and two varieties of olive oil—the best I’ve ever had.

    Afterward, we returned to the hotel for some downtime, playing cards and sipping drinks before dinner.

    Dinner was unforgettable—it felt like a dinner party! Guests who signed up all sat together at a communal table, where we enjoyed a four-course meal. We shared stories with a couple from Montreal and two ladies from Switzerland, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

    Tomorrow is our final day of hiking, and it’s a short one, so we are looking for alternative route to make it longer    Read more

    Day 4

    20km Hike Through, Rain, Snow and Hail

    March 2 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

    Today marked our second day of hiking. We trekked 20km from Vilarinho de São Romão to Alijó. Along the way, we had a few moments where we missed the trail and had to backtrack or take alternate routes. The weather was wild—grey clouds, rain, hail, and even snow!

    Despite the challenges, Deb and I powered through, chatting the whole time as we steadily climbed uphill, gaining 726m in elevation.

    We’ve now arrived at our hotel for the night and are enjoying a lovely rose port with tonic in the bar area. It’s still raining here, but the on-site restaurant is highly rated, so we’re planning to settle in and enjoy a cozy dinner tonight.

    Tomorrow’s hike will be another long one, but thankfully, most of it will be downhill!    Read more

    Regenprobe...☔☔🌧️🌧️☔☔

    Wie angekündigt, regnet es heute den ganzen Tag. Es ist die Probe für meine Dichtung. Abgesehen von ein paar Ausnahmen verbringe ich den ganzen Tag im LT. Ich sortiere meine Bilder, aktualisiere meine Homepage. Dazwischen etwas Filme sehen am Laptop. Ich teste auch das Tablet. In das WLan von der Quinta kann ich mich ohne Probleme einwählen. Warum das Netz meines WLan-Routers nicht erkannt wird, weiß ich nicht. Aber das werde ich schon noch herausbekommen...
    Die Dichtung scheint zu halten - aber die "richtige" Probe kommt erst heute Nacht. Da soll es nicht nur regnen und stürmen (90km/h), sondern auch leichtes Gewitter geben.
    Am Abend ist es plötzlich dunkel im LT... Stromausfall...na toll...an mir kann es nicht liegen - im Moment läuft noch nicht einmal der Heizlüfter. Vielleicht meine neuen Nachbarn aus UK? Ich muss wohl draußen mal nachsehen - und das bei Regen 😠🥴
    Dann fällt mir aber auf: nicht nur auf dem Stellplatz ist der Strom weg, auch die Beleuchtung der Quinta ist dunkel. Haben die wirklich nur eine Sicherung? Ein Blick nach links und ich sehe, dass das ganze Tal dunkel ist... Das beruhigt mich: zu einen, weil der Stromausfall nicht an mir oder den Nachbarn liegen kann und zum anderen, weil sich, wenn ein ganzes Dorf ohne Strom ist, jemand darum kümmern wird. Und richtig: ca.10 Minuten später ist alles wieder hell. Und die Dichtung hält immer noch... vorsichtiger Optimismus kommt auf... Mal sehen, wie es morgen aussieht...    Read more
