    Präsidentenpalast von Habib Bourguiba

    Heute Morgen verlegten wir unseren Stellplatz um 5 km und landeten direkt am ehemaligen Präsidentenpalast von Habib Bourguiba – der heute als Museum dient. Der Palast, einst Symbol für Macht und Prestige, hat leider schon bessere Zeiten gesehen. Während die weißen Fassaden noch erahnen lassen, wie beeindruckend das Gebäude einst gewesen sein muss, sieht man dem Bauwerk an, dass es dringend eine Renovierung nötig hätte. Besonders der einst prächtige Springbrunnen im Innenhof, der sicher früher für das perfekte „Ich-bin-mächtig“-Ambiente sorgte, liegt heute trist und ungepflegt da.

    Das Museum im Palast ist dennoch faszinierend und gibt einen Einblick in das Leben und Wirken von Bourguiba, dem ersten Präsidenten Tunesiens. Von seiner ikonischen Sonnenbrille über elegante Anzüge bis hin zu einem alten, prunkvollen Schreibtisch wird hier alles präsentiert, was ihn als Staatsmann ausmachte. Besonders beeindruckend ist sein Büro, das noch immer so wirkt, als hätte er es gerade erst verlassen, um irgendwo im Palast eine wichtige Entscheidung zu treffen.

    Ein weiteres Highlight ist die Ausstellung seiner Limousine, die die Pracht vergangener Zeiten widerspiegelt. Doch auch hier wird man etwas wehmütig: Während die Erinnerungsstücke gut in Szene gesetzt sind, hätte das Gebäude selbst dringend mehr Aufmerksamkeit und Pflege verdient. Es ist schade, dass für die Erhaltung dieses Kulturguts offenbar nicht genügend Mittel bereitgestellt werden, denn die Architektur und Geschichte des Palastes hätten eine strahlendere Präsentation verdient.

    Beim Verlassen des Museums blieb ein gemischtes Gefühl zurück: einerseits die Bewunderung für Bourguibas Lebenswerk, andererseits die Ernüchterung über den Zustand dieses einst so beeindruckenden Ortes.
    Vom Palast aus fuhren wir weiter in nahe gelegene Sousse. Hier stehen wir jetzt direkt am Strand an der Sand beach bar und genießen das schöne Wetter.    Read more

    Mausoleum von Habib Bourguiba

    Nach unserer Pause im „Resto My Cocoon“ schlenderten wir durch die Medina von Monastir. Diese verwinkelten Gassen voller kleiner Läden und geschäftiger Händler stammen aus dem Mittelalter und sind von einer imposanten Stadtmauer umgeben, die einst zum Schutz vor Angriffen diente. Die Mischung aus historischen Mauern und lebendigem Treiben versetzt einen direkt in eine andere Zeit.

    Unser letzter Programmpunkt des Tages führte uns zum Mausoleum von Habib Bourguiba, dem ersten Präsidenten Tunesiens und einer der prägendsten Figuren der modernen Geschichte des Landes. Die prachtvolle Anlage mit ihren großen Kuppeln und filigranen Verzierungen ist nicht nur ein architektonisches Meisterwerk, sondern auch ein Ort der Ruhe und Besinnung. Hier ruht Bourguiba in einer beeindruckenden, mit Marmor geschmückten Grabstätte, die seine bedeutende Rolle in der tunesischen Geschichte würdigt.

    Am Abend wurden wir dann noch Zeugen eines ganz besonderen Schauspiels. Tausende von Staren versammelten sich am Himmel über Monastir und boten eine beeindruckende Tanzvorstellung. In perfekt synchronen Schwärmen zogen sie ihre Bahnen, formten immer neue, fließende Muster und flogen in scheinbar müheloser Harmonie über die Dächer der Stadt. Mal wogen sie sich wie Wellen im Meer, mal schossen sie wie ein lebender Pfeil durch die Lüfte. Es war ein faszinierendes Spektakel, das die Geräusche der Stadt verstummen ließ, während wir mit staunenden Blicken diesem natürlichen Wunder zuschauten.     Der Ribat von Monastir

    Heute stand der Ribat von Monastir auf dem Programm – ein wahres Juwel der mittelalterlichen Küstenverteidigung und eine der ältesten Festungen Tunesiens. Der Name „Ribat“ bedeutet auf Hocharabisch „Garnisonsort“, und die Besatzungstruppen nannte man Mourabitouns. Klingt fast wie eine Mischung aus Ritter und Mönch, was auch passt, denn neben militärischer Verteidigung stand hier auch die Religion hoch im Kurs.

    Errichtet wurde der Ribat im Jahr 797 unter dem Statthalter Hirthina, um die Küste vor feindlichen Angriffen – vor allem der Byzantiner – zu schützen. Und das Ding hat einiges zu bieten: Ein Wachturm für den Überblick, massive Steinmauern, Pechnasen für heiße Willkommensgrüße und ein Fallgitter für ungebetene Gäste. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde die Festung immer wieder ausgebaut, erweitert und angepasst – Kanonenplattformen kamen dazu, Frauen-Räume wurden eingerichtet, und irgendwann verlor der Ribat seine militärische Bedeutung und wurde mehr ein Ort der Besinnung und Einkehr.

    Heute beherbergt die Festung ein Museum, und man kann den einstigen Wachturm besteigen, der immer noch wie eine steinerne Erinnerung an vergangene Zeiten in den Himmel ragt. Von oben hat man übrigens eine fantastische Aussicht – definitiv ein Highlight, wenn man schwindelfrei ist!

    Nach so viel Geschichte und dem Herumlaufen auf jahrhundertealten Steinen waren unsere Füße reif für eine Pause. Im „Resto My Cocoon“ gab es genau das, was wir brauchten: ein herrliches Thunfisch-Omelett, frisch gepressten Orangensaft und einen Cappuccino. Gestärkt und entspannt ließen wir den Besuch des beeindruckenden Ribats Revue passieren.    Read more

    Über Kairouan nach Monastir

    Nach einem entspannten Frühstück machten wir uns voller Vorfreude auf den Weg nach Kairouan, der heiligen Stadt, die rund 75 km entfernt liegt. Wir hatten den Stellplatz am Jugendheim, den einzigen offiziellen Platz für Wohnmobile in Kairouan, als Ziel eingeplant. Doch schon die Anfahrt dorthin war mehr als ernüchternd: Der viele Müll entlang der Straßen trübte die Stimmung erheblich. Wir schauten uns an und waren uns sofort einig – wohlfühlen würden wir uns hier nicht.

    Am Jugendheim angekommen, folgte die nächste Enttäuschung: Das Gelände glich einer riesigen Baustelle. Hier zu bleiben war keine Option. Die weiteren in Park4Night eingetragenen Stellplätze waren entweder zu klein für unser Fahrzeug oder schlicht ungeeignet. Also fuhren wir quer durch die Stadt zur Touristinfo – nur um festzustellen, dass diese geschlossen war.

    Als letzte Hoffnung fragte ich im gegenüberliegenden Continental Hotel, ob wir auf ihrem großzügigen Parkplatz stehen könnten, natürlich gegen Bezahlung. Doch auch hier bekamen wir eine Absage. Der Pförtner verwies uns auf das nahegelegene Hotel Amina, aber dort angekommen war schnell klar: Der Parkplatz war viel zu klein und bereits voll. Das war der Punkt, an dem wir endgültig genug hatten. Kairouan musste ohne unseren Besuch auskommen. Wir setzten das Navi kurzerhand auf Monastir, und die Reise ging weiter.

    In Monastir angekommen, fanden wir einen schönen Parkplatz direkt am Hafen. Nach einem kurzen Spaziergang entlang der Boote gönnten wir uns eine wohlverdiente Kaffeepause. Anschließend schnappten wir uns die Räder und fuhren eine Runde durch die Stadt, um uns einen ersten Eindruck zu verschaffen. Der Kontrast zu Kairouan war sofort spürbar: Monastir begrüßte uns mit deutlich saubereren Straßen, einer lebhaften Atmosphäre und einem Hauch von maritimem Flair. Das Abenteuer ging weiter, und wir waren gespannt, was die Stadt noch zu bieten hatte.    Read more
