    Cruise the Med.

    March 24 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Arrived on board MSC Sinfonia this afternoon and found most of the passengers are Italian. As expected many are retired and loving life. They are social, sing, dance and attend all the scheduled events. Day 2 we landed in Izmir where we went ashore to visit Ephesus. In the first-century it was the Roman Capital of Asia Minor. It has a amphitheater and they rebuilt the facade of the library. Day 3 we sailed into Istanbul and it was a spectacular entrance to see the mosques and sprawling city wrap us in a welcome hug. We visited Topkapi Palace, the center of the ottoman empire where the sultan lived. It was very well preserved with the €55 each cost of entry. Day 4 was at sea, with the morning nice and bright. We walked laps on the deck then relaxed for the afternoon. Day 5 we landed in Corfu town and walked around the old venetian town. Almost missed the bus as i was buying delicious baklava from “Rosie shop”. Day 6 we were in Bari and went to see beautiful old town called Alberobello with trulli, whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs made from dry stone. Day 7 was at sea and we had a relaxing day as the seas were calm. We were lucky enough to sit on the back deck, by ourselves, in the sun protected from the wind. There was a captain’s party with free happy hour cocktails. We had a lovely week.Read more

    Treffen mit Eda

    February 8 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Shopping day and the last supper

    November 14, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Spent the day looking around the sights and shops with my friend Serafettin, and I might have bought a magic carpet 😜
Then went out for dinner with the group for our last dinner as we had to start fasting from 6pm to get ready for surgery the next day. It was a fun restaurant with fireworks and a firey claypot dish they bought out to anoher table with singing and performing. The food we had was yummy and of course this Kiwi girl ordered the lamb chops 😁
Ben enjoyed the Turkish ice cream performance they put on when you get ice cream here from a street vendor, however I think he was over charged $15 NZD for one small ice cream seemed a bit much.

    Exploring Istanbul

    November 13, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

After havng the buffet breakfast at the hotel, I went exploring. The hotel is right next to the popular tourist areas and there was a large Viking cruise ship in the harbour so the place was packed with tourists. So many interesting food shops here with delicious looking cakes 🎂 and lots of Turkish rug shops with men trying to sell me rugs. Which is where I met Serafettin he owns a large handmade Turkish rug shop and some other businesses here and in America. We got talking and he offered to show me around, he took me on the metro underground and under the water to the Asian side of Turkey a place called Üsküdar. We had coffee in a terrace cafe that overlooked the Bosphorus. And went to a mosque, then we caught a ferry back to the European side. We spent most of the day together looking around and having lunch before my jet lag caught up on me and this Nana needed a nap 😴
In the evening Serafettin picked me up from the hotel and took me to the Hammam a Turkish bath where you have a sauna and get rubbed and scrubbed all over, then covered in foam bubbles and massaged all over while you lay on warm marble Wow!!! That was an experience and a half 🥰
So apart from the blisters on my feet from walking miles, you can tell I'm really loving Türkiye so far 🇹🇷

    Istanbul erleben…

    October 14, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

    July 22, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

    J141-145 -Istanbul - partie 2

    July 15, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

    [Eliott]

    J137-140-Istanbul - partie 1

    July 10, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

    [Eliott]

    Getting there

    July 9, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

After Shutterfly shut down their web hosting service that served as our platform for travels, I was planning to lay low this trip. Well, that doesn’t seem to be happening. So, hold on, we have some catchin’ up to do!

Leaving at the reasonable hour of 11:30am suited us well after many a trip that saw us arriving at the airport before most people were still in heavenly slumber.

Leaving our trusty Subaru in the Economy lot (21 days is a lot of parking!) we grabbed the shuttle to the terminal. Through security in a flash, gotta love Spokane, and on to our gate to begin our 3-plane, 23+ hour travel day.

I only found about an hour of sleep on the trip across the pond and an additional 30 minutes from Amsterdam to Istanbul. Kim and Myah found better success in grabbing some Zzzs while Brendan fared about the same as me.

The only things of note during our air travel was Myah's seeking of a commitment that we visit the Netherlands in the future for more than a view of the inside of their international airport and the shudder that went through the plane when a flight attendant announced that due to a luggage handling breakdown, none of the checked luggage had made it aboard the plane! Now we know why we were late taking off and this is exactly why we always travel carry-on only!

day 4- Blue mosque, Sophia Hagia, Grand

    May 26, 2024 in Turkey ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

What a beautiful full day we have had!!! walking, walking, walking - glorious weather and day one with our tour. So far we are really impressed. our tour guide is knowledgeable and communicates so much about türkiye easily. A really nice collection of people in the group too.
we began our day being dropped off in the old town - traffic is horrific - not surprising given population in instanbul is over 20 million in a space slightly bigger than new york. We went to the beautiful hippodrome- a sporting and entertainment ground built in 203 AD - with a rich roman, greek and turkish history and many monuments including the monolithic obelisk which has bronze made from roman soldiers shields during battles!!! We visited the BEAUTIFUL Blue Mosque and learned so much about architecture, islam and Türkiye followed by a tour of the Sophia Hagia of 532 which has been the grand mosque, a church and museum and still a mosque now. The mosaics were amazing, the painting and rendering incredible especially the history of what lay beneath some paint - images of christ and angels faces and the history of architecture so interesting - ie dome design etc
then we went to the basilica. unbelievable! a water filtration and storage system built underground by about 7000 slaves in 532 and held 80,000 cubic metres of water! it’s massive. it’s beautiful and obviously now empty except for the water under the walk way - the columns and arches are beautiful and now home to sculptures and art work. Amazingly over time the underground basilica was forgotten until an old lady kept complaining of hearing water dripping under her floor. they dug it up and found this basilica cistern. it has 336 columns - each one different - is referred to as the sunken palace. photos don’t do justice.
then we walked forever and ever through the busy streets and bizarre to the golden horns bridges and caught a ferry. The ferry was amazing - rocky, windy, and choppy water owing to the fact that it connects the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea and Dardanelles Strait. on one side of ferry was europe and the other side asia. Lots of boats out including two tankers on the way to the Ukraine:(
after our 1 1/2 hour ferry ride we walked to the grand spice bizarre - wow wow wow! words escape me- incredibly beautiful!
Then we walked to a roof top restaurant for dinner and to watch the sunset over a grand mosque and the old city. We have had the fullest day and enjoyed it so much.
