    Ashwell, Hinxworth, and Caldecote

    This walk was done with the Cambridge Rambling Club, taking in 3 villages off the beaten track on the border of Hertfordshire with Cambridgeshire.

    Ashwell is 4 miles north-east of Baldock; it is a pretty town that I explore over the lunch break, with some of the sites being seen on the walk back.  It is well preserved, with many listed and other buildings of note (see captions on photographs); these include a the 16th-century town house (now a local museum) and the Maltings (now converted into flats).  Ashwell Bury, a large Victorian house, was remodelled by Edwin Lutyens in the 1920s; Lutyens also designed the Grade 2 listed Ashwell War Memorial, unveiled in 1922.  

    The village is noted for Ashwell Springs, a site of Special Scientific Interest; the site consists of a series of freshwater springs, which form the start of the river Rhee, one of the main sources of the River Cam.
    The Cam flows through the centre of Cambridge, then to Ely, where it joins the Great Ouse and eventually reaches the Wash 65 miles away.

    We leave Ashwell via the Church and follow footpaths, including part of the 12th century Ridgeway, to Hinxworth; we stop at the Church of St Nicholas and pass the home of John W Mills, a British Sculptor.  We continue on to Caldecote; this tiny village consists of a cluster of cottages around the redundant Church of St. Mary Magdalene, which dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and is currently in the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches charity.  From here, we walk back to Ashwell via Newnham Hill; it has been an enjoyable 7.1 mile walk (although the conditions were rather muddy).     Lovely little hotel in a lovely little place with lovely (not little) people!!!

    Ena and I tried to Uber outside of Sandy station, no luck. No taxi around either. Bus would have taken half an hour with a weird route. But no, an electric car stops next to us, window down, and a man asked “do you need a lift?” So nice!!!Read more

    Šī brauciena pirmais un galvenais mērķis Def Leppard un Motley Crue koncerts pasaulslavenajā Wembley stadionā - Londonā. Nopērkot biļetes uz koncertu vēl nebija nekādi plāni šim pavasarim tāpēc sanācis tāds ļoti piesātināts pirmais 2023. pusgads gan morāli, gan finansiāli. Maģistrs-būvinženiera sertifikāts - Patagonija - Rammstein - jauna mašīna - un tagad Def Leppard/Motley Crue koncerts Londonā. Gads ir tikai pusē. Neslikti grafiks...

    Multicultural night, een mooi feest!

    Wat was het een geweldig feest. Jill en de muzikanten, Sam met zijn geweldige speech: maar ook oproep om te bidden voor het behoud van ANC (financieel zitten ze in zwaar weer, door het studenten aantal wat daalt), Nath en Filiipp met hun verhalen en samen zingen.

    Erg genoten, van alle mooi kostuums, hapjes en zo leuk om te zien dat er voor ons speciaal gezinnen uit de kerk van het dorp waren gekomen.

    'k ben zo verwonderd over in hoe korte tijd 5 weken, ze me onderdeel van de gemeente hebben kunnen laten worden. Ze waren zo blij met de nieuwsbrief, een zegen om voor elkaar tot zegen te zijn!    Read more

    Day 62

    De voorbereidingen voor het feest

    Tranen voor het komende vertrek. En drukte voor de laatste assessments, onderzoeken en eindpresentaties. Een medestudent die al 5 dagen in ziekenhuis ligt.

    Tegelijkertijd staan er zulke leuke dingen te wachten en zijn de voorbereidingen in volle gang:
    Woensdag groot multicultuurnight, iedereen is als kleding van over de wereld aan het passen. Vrijdag vollebaltournament dressed up, wij zijn de pinguins. We leren hier dat je in een nieuw land een penguin moet zoeken. Een lokaal iemand die je kan meenemen en samen met je de zee in duikt. Want onder water daar zit het grootste gedeelte van de ijsberg: mensen hun waarden, wereldbeeld, verwachtingen en verlangens.
    Uitje met team van coffee en bookshop, zo leuk dat wordt allemaal gesponserd. Donderdag is er ook nog een grote vragen bijeenkomst er zijn nog mensen die niet weten waar ze over 1,5 week heen moeten en ook niet voor langer termijn.

    Studenten worden niet op straat gezet, maar voor verschillende is thuis/fam te ver weg of daar kunnen ze niet heen on de vakantie. Waarschijnlijk komt Anne met mij mee de eerste week en later komt Mai nog een paar nachtjes.    Read more

    Wimpole Estate

    We have recently joined the National Trust and our first use of our passes is to a locally owned NT property; the Wimpole Estate, comprising a listed 17th century Georgian mansion (Wimpole Hall) with its associated gardens, parkland and working farm (Home Farm). 

    We visit Wimpole Hall first and are able to see part of the interior (see picture captions).  We then look round the gardens; these include a formal grand avenue which heads south (and is visible from the top of Royston Heath, several miles away), whereas the parkland on the north side and behind the house were "naturalised" (by Capability Brown).  Here, we walk north towards Wimpole's Folly (a false Gothic Tower, 1768) and loop back via part of the multi-user trail to see other estate buildings - St Andrew's Church and the stable block.  We then look around the Walled Garden and Home Farm (home to rare breeds, including Shire horses, pigs, sheep, cows, and goats).

    The Wimpole Estate is a lovely place to visit, walk, and explore during different times of the year - we'll be back.    Read more

    Baldock

    Baldock is a historic market town in Hertfordshire less than 10 miles southwest of Royston; it has an association with the Knioghts Templar, is mostly Georgian, and also has an exceptionally rich archaeological heritage.  Malting and brewing were formerly major industries in the town, but today, it is mostly a commuter town.

    The majority of the interesting buildings are near to, or along, the High Street; we start at the War Memorial and see some of them (see captions on pictures).  After a slight diversion to walk along a street where there were originally roman buildings (The Twitchell) and an area where there was an Iron Age burial site (The Tene), we double back to see the Tesco supermarket (originally a film processing laboratory) before walking along what was the southern edge of the Medieval New Town (South Road). 

    We turn into Clothall Road and soon cross over to a footpath over a field towards Clothall Common; this field is where the Iron Age and Roman towns and several burial sites have been found.  We then head back into town along Royston Road; Raban House is at the junction with Whitehorse Street.  Then it's along Sun Street to St Mary's Church and back to the War Memorial to complete this short tour of Georgian and Ancient Baldock    Read more

    Ik hoor Giles om 6 uur naar zijn werk gaan, maar we hebben gisteravond al afscheid genomen. Na het ontbijt met Esmé neem ik afscheid en ga. Het miezert een heel klein beetje. In Kempston kom ik langs een Liddl, heb ik wel ff zin in. Ik koop 3 pains au chocolats (voor de prijs van 2) en een chocolade muffin. Als ik naar buiten wil: stortbui. Dus ik lees in de hal een stukje in mijn e-reader. Met hele vage miezer weer verder door park en bos over vrijliggend fietspad, zelfs een fietsbrug. Jammer dat het steeds harder gaat regenen. En midden in die plensbui word ik gestoken, door een wesp denk ik. Waar ik dat nou aan verdiend heb. Ik fietste alleen maar. Uitzuigen, maar het doet zo'n pijn dat ik niet goed weet waar. Gelukkig komt vlak daarna "Danish Camp", een kroeg, zodat ik mijn anti-histaminecreme kan opduiken. Doet geen wonderen, maar: ik ben niet allergisch. Lekker hoor. En ook lekker gegeten en alvast wat typen in de hoop dat het droger wordt. Helaas. Nog 17 km naar de camping......
    Na een extra capuchino wordt het soort van droog. Gelukkig maar, want ik krijg een lekke band. Flauw hoor, rijd je op versleten banden, pik je anderhalve cm. glas op, rijd je lek.... 😉. Wel snel gevonden dus. Met het weer op zijn wielen zetten, blijft een trapper in mijn jas haken. Ik krijg niet al het zwart van mijn been gewassen, dat is waarschijnlijk omdat het een blauwe plek is. Gelukkig doet die steek nog zoveel pijn dat ik de blauwe plek niet voel.
    Het wordt wel echt droog, ik kan droog opzetten, zelfs na een lange babbel met de camping meneer die ook in NZ is geweest. Deze camping heeft ook al douches waar je de temperatuur van kan regelen. Wat een heerlijke luxe.
    Live dangerously: ik heb een waslijntje gespannen en dingen te drogen gehangen!
    Zit er een kurk in mijn wijnfles, krijg ik die er zowat niet uit! Grrr. Lukt toch. Proost.    Read more

    Grantchester im Sonnenaufgang

    Heute Morgen bin ich um fünf Uhr aufgestanden. Und das alles nur um den Sonnenaufgang um zehn vor sechs in Grantchester mitzuerleben. Tomke ist liegengeblieben. Das kann ich nachvollziehen, aber ich bin auch froh, dass ich raus gegangen bin!
    Die Meadows so ganz alleine erleben zu dürfen war schon echt besonders! Da war es auch gar nicht so kalt. Viel vom echten Sonnenaufgang hab ich vielleicht nicht gesehen, aber alles wurde rosa und mein letzter Morgen in Cambridge war wunderschön! (Ich bin fast ein bisschen stolz auf mich gerade!)     Orchard Tearoom - Die Zweite

    Nach dem Reservat sind wir ein bisschen auch über die Grantchester Meadows spaziert bevor wir als letzte Kunden in dem Orchard Tearoom wieder einen Tee getrunken haben.
    Tee ist schon so ziemlich das Beste, was es gibt.
    Die Obstwiese war auch wieder einfach nur toll! Ich bin sehr glücklich und dankbar, dass ich das alles so erleben darf hier! Ich fokussiere mich jetzt auf all das, was mich glücklich macht. Das ist hilfreich für ein gutes Gefühl beim Einschlafen.    Read more
