    San Diego 2 - Bye bye Pacific

    Heute galt es Abschied zu nehmen vom schönen San Diego und damit auch von der Pazifikküste. Zunächst haben wir aber einen für San Diego nicht unbedeutenden Part wahrgenommen: Die USS Navy. In großen Teilen des Hafengebiets liegen Militärschiffe, und auch die dazugehörige Werft ist nicht ganz klein. Am Vormittag haben wir uns dazu den imposanten Flugzeugträger USS Midway angeschaut, etwas über seine besondere Rolle im 2. Weltkrieg erfahren, und die Kids haben allesamt in einem Jagdflieger probegesessen. (Allerdings sind alle durchgefallen - alle zu groß! 😅) Es ist ziemlich beeindruckend, wie die Amis ihrem Stolz auf das Militär Ausdruck verleihen, zugleich den zahlreichen Veteranen Hochachtung zukommen lassen - nicht zuletzt, indem sie sie in Ehrenämter einspannen. Der Flugzeugträger mit der Kulisse von San Diego im Hintergrund war zwar irgendwie cool, so richtig überzeugen konnte uns das Militärgedöns aber nicht. Wir waren allesamt froh, von dem Schiff wieder runter zu sein 😅
    Dann wollten wir noch alle gemeinsam etwas Sonne, Strand und Pazifik genießen und haben uns an der schönen Coronado Beach ins ziemlich kalte Wasser gewagt. Beeindruckend und für uns befremdlich war auch hier das Militäraufgebot zu Wasser und in der Luft. Der golden(!) schimmernde Strand lag in unmittelbarer Nähe zum einem Militärflughafen und somit direkt unter der Einflugschneise diverser Militärmaschinen. 🙈
    Dann hieß es endgültig Abschied zu nehmen und gen Osten aufzubrechen. San Diego hatte wirklich was: Viel Sonnenschein, angenehme Temperaturen und Palmen. Palmen, Palmen, Palmen! 🌴🌴
    Von nun an beginnt der eher ungeplante Teil des Roadtrips. Zumindest sind keine Campingplätze vorgebucht. Doch schon beim ersten Campground (Oakzania Springs) in den Bergen hinter San Diego hatten wir Glück: Der ziemlich lustig-konfuse Platzwart hat seinen Papierkram irgendwann so auf die Reihe bekommen, dass er uns einlassen konnte. 😅 Bis wir dann endlich auf unserem Platz standen, war es schon so dunkel, dass wir die Idee, heute Abend Fisch zu grillen erst einmal verschoben haben. Dafür hatten die Mädels in der Dunkelheit noch eine Begegnung der besonderen Art: Eine Vogelspinne versperrte den Weg zu den Duschräumen! 😱 Wieder eine Tierbegegnung, die wir von der Bucketliste streichen können.     San Diego

    San Diego - Surfers Paradise! 🏄🏼‍♀️🌸

    Sit üsem letschte Itrag isch scho wieder vöu Wasser de Colorado River ab, aber üsi Täg si aktuell eifach immer vo Morge bis Abe erläbnisrich und zuesätzlech hemmer i üsem erste Nationalpark, Joshua Tree, kei Empfang gha. Aber aues i de reihe na! Ufghört het üse letschti Itrag in Los Angeles. Die Site, wo mir vo dere Stadt gseh hei, si sehr schön und hollywoodmässig gse! Witer simmer am Tag druf richtig San Diego und si nach 2 Täg früeh ufstah und de ganz Tag umelaufe, nah gsi, für e chillige Tag. Drum hemmer üses Zmorge ganz gemüüüütlich igno. Mir ässe meistens es Müesli mit griechischem Joghurt und Früchte, trinke e Orangejus (Chanti und Nädi) oder es Kaffi (Luisa), mitem stolz koufte Biagletti oder choche amene Sunntig ou mau es Ei 🥚. Üse Camper het zwar inzwüsche sehr vöu z biete, z.B. e Mikrowälle, det transportiere mer aber lieber üse Toaster, wo mer für 10 $ im Walmart kouft hei. De Alex vom Camping in Santa Barbara het das e sehr interessanti Transportart gfunde😂. Platzoptimierig isch sitem Start vo üsem Campingabentür sowieso üsi Houptbeschäftigung Nr. 1!

    Aber ebe, zrugg zu San Diego. Die Stadt het üs vom erste Momänt a fasziniert. Bis zum Strand simmer dür paar richtig cooli Ami-Quartierli gfahre - wie mer das vom Färnseh könnt. De Pacific Beach het üs de ändlech die langersehnte schöne Stunde am Strand bote und mir si sogar im chaute Pazifik go bade. D Luisa het üs s Surfe gründlech erklärt. Und übrigens; D Amis hei Nationalfiertig gha und vieli hei de Tag am Strand verbrunge. De Camping isch nachher richtig luxuriös gsi und het sogar e riese Pool gha, judihui😍. De 4th of July hemmer im heisse Wihrlpool gfiret und üsi Nachbere hei mit Liechter und crazy Deko Gas gä. 🇺🇸

    Am nächste Tag hemmer San Diego erkundet. Gstartet simmer im Balboa Park mit wunderschöne Gebäude und em Spanish Village, si witer uf Downtown is Gaslamp Quartier und de Wolkechratzer und de mitem Schiff uf Coronado Island zu de Riche und Schöne (füre Apéro het üses Budget knapp glänget). Wie sichs so nöch ade mexikanische Gränze ghört, si Tacos ufem Spisplan gstande und ou de Cheesecake ide Cheescake Factory isch himmlisch gseh - d Kalorie ignoriere mer mau.😉🍰 San Diego, du hesch üses Härz🫶🏼🌴🌸🇺🇸🏄🏼‍♀️.     San Diego and Tijuana

    We've spent four days in our final and southernmost destination. The first two days we camped on Silver Strand State beach. A very nice place to camp, almost right on the beach with several miles of beach to walk or jog and enjoy the many shore birds. My favourite was the pelican. I loved watching them hovering and circling about five metres over the ocean and then diving straight into the water for fish.

    During the first full day in San Diego we bought all day metro passes and took the bus into downtown. We walked and shopped and then caught a train out to Fashion Valley, a large shopping centre and shopped some more. We then caught the train back but got off in Old Town to walk around. We also decided to return to Fred's for a Mexican dinner. We had been there before on our last trip to San Diego, about five years ago.

    On the second day, we had to pack up the trailer and move it to the KOA as SS only had room for us for two nights. It was only a 20 minute drive. Before doing so though, we started our day as we have on most days, with a 30 minute run on the beach after coffees.

    After setting up camp at the KOA, we hopped in the truck and drove to the Mexico US border. We parked at a large outlet mall for free instead of paying $15 at the official lot. We had no wait or trouble getting across the border and had a great day, walking along Avenida de la Revolution and up to a large farmers market and shopping centre. We caught a cab back to a spot near the border and did a bit more shopping. Then walked back to the US and shopped in the huge outlet mall where we were parked. On the way back to the KOA we picked up groceries and then had a late dinner back at the campsite.

    Today was our last day, and although it was cloudy decided to go to the beach. We went to Ocean Beach first thinking it was where we were last time in SD. It was busy with a surfing competition going on. We asked and found out we wanted to go to Mission Beach, only a short drive away.

    On arrival at the boardwalk we were approached by a family leaving to catch a plane who had two extra boogie boards they didn't want and offered them to us for a very good price. So, we now had four good boards. We all got out on the water and had a good time catching waves. It wasn't too warm though so we didn't stay as long as we might have otherwise. But it was getting time to make dinner and we had lots to look forward to doing back at the KOA.    Read more

    Road to San Diego

    Auf der Fahrt nach San Diego haben wir in San Bernardino beim McDonalds Museum einen Halt gemacht. Damals kostete ein Burger noch 15 Cent 😯 Die Menükarte war die Erste bei McDonalds, die Verpackungen ebenfalls.

    Um die teilweise traurige Geschichte von McDonalds zu verstehen, empfehlen wir den Film Founder. 🍔🍟

    In San Diego angekommen suchten wir am Abend verzweifelt ein Restaurant, welches NICHT Fast Food war und man auch nicht für ein Spaghetti Teller 35$ zahlen musste. (Köstliches / gutes Essen ist rar)    Read more

    Day 22

    Lunch With A Friend, Aquarium & Zoo

    The past three days have been awesome! Saturday I had lunch with a Harley buddy and got my first Lap of the 48 stop. Sunday morning I spent at the Birch Aquarium, followed by a St Paddy's Day fish & chips lunch by the beach and a soak in the campground's pool-side jacuzzi. And today I spent entirely at the San Diego Zoo! I've attached just a few pics to make you jealous 😉.

    So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish [and mammals and birds and reptiles!!]! ✌️

    Day 19: Santa Margarita to San Diego

    Picking up from two days ago, the wine and fire were very relaxing, and I managed a great rest despite the cold.

    The next day, yesterday, I just hung out at camp and packed what I could until around 1630, when I filled up the tank and had an extraordinary dinner in town at a restaurant called "The Range." I had asparagus cream soup to start 😋, grilled halibut on a bed of smashed potatoes and pan fried spinach with the perfect dab of a garlicy Dijon sauce all topped with ultra thin fried onion strings 😱. I decided to go all the way and finished with a strawberry trifle and cup of decaf coffee. O. M. G. it was sooooooo good.

    Another good sleep with two pairs of socks this time, and I was up at 0530 to break camp.

    By 0700 this morning, my heated gear was thawing me out and Luci and I were on the road to HDs all the way south. Taking Highway 101 to I-5, I hit a lot of traffic everywhere, so I got to practice my lane splitting skills. It is definitely not for the faint of heart 😳.

    I only had a couple of sort of close calls and got to my San Diego KOA at a out 1500. Plenty of time to set up camp and make a run to the store. Now I'm having an adult beverage, hoping the temperature stays above 50°F tonight ✌️.

    I'm having a great time and wish y'all could join me!!

    Just north of the border

    Well, so we decided to skip LA and spend and extra day in San Diego in a luxury KOA RV park ... styling. We have had wonderful weather and went to hang out in La Jollaroday. Tomorrow we set off for Guadalupe Valley for 3 nights ... yay .. wine country!Read more
