    Skyline Drive

    October 17, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

In the morning we went to a community center with a swimming pool, as it was way cheaper than a shower. We had a nice swim and breakfast at the parking lot.
After we drove through the scenic drive and had two small hikes on the Appalachian trail, but we were a bit afraid of the bears, because many signs were warning about them, and the day before we did see a bear family at Gatlinburg. We stopped at amazing viewpoints, and saw the sunset with beautiful autumn colours.Read more

    Last Day in Shenandoah NP

    June 6, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

On our last day, we did some more hikes, such as the Big Run Loop. The weather was really humid, but it was still very enjoyable. The Trail would take us partially to the Appalachian Trail, where we would encounter people that are hiking the trail right now (they have a little flag with the sign of the Appalachian Trail on their backpack, showing that they are taking on this big challenge to walk the length of the whole Appalachian Trail).
We kept joking that, because I am one of the fast hikers, I would be doing the whole Appalachian Trail in two weeks (average is ca. 6 months) and we were laughing while André said things like "they won't see Kayley coming" (because I would have to be inhumanly fast to actually complete this trail in 2 weeks). Or as Stefanie said, after I am done, it isn't the Appalachian Trail but the Appalachian Highway (since my speed would blast away any trees that are in my way).
We also found a snake on the trail. Since it was in the middle of the trail, we took a stick and pushed it more in the bushes, so no one would step on it. The snake was rather confused, I think.
In the evening, we packed up. Sadly, it was our last day in the NP, though we would go to a National Forest in the morning.

    Shenandoah National Park Day 3-4

    June 4, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We headed more down to Loft Mountain, a beautiful Campground, where we could wash our clothes. Around there were also a few hikes, though we had to battle with bad weather, either being to rainy or too humid, sweating through our freshly washed clothes faster than we thought. Still, it was nice and I still enjoyed evey minute here!Read more

    Shenandoah National Park

    September 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

    May 8, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Read more

    Pinefield Hut 895.6

    June 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

We slept in a bit today and started later than usual around 8. We've had our tent set up next to another one and in the morning we met the inhabitant. A hiking enthusiast from Spain who hiked all the Caminos and is now thru hiking. Besides his personal blog he also writes about his experiences for the renown news Marca. Julia had already seen that he is on the trail from the Shelter logs and was excited to meet him so she finally had someone to talk in Spanish :)
In the after we came by the nice summit of Blackrock Mountain which is covered in grey rocks. But we suppose that they look blackish from further away. There are so many parking lots and tourists along the trail here. It doesn't feel like the calm walk in the woods anymore that we are used to.

Later we stopped by a camp store to a new gas canister to be sure to make it through the Shenandoahs. From there it was just a small hike to a restaurant where we had a well deserved Cheeseburger and Chili Cheese Fries. After lunch we met Maverick (Jup, Top Gun!!) a fellow thru hiker who has seen already 8 bears today :o And she hiked the exact same trail parts as us...

Oh, and I think I got my first blister today from the socks :( It's not too bad but still hurts, I just wonder why it took almost two months :D

    April 29 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today’s highlight was hitting mile 900. Also our campsite has this great rocky ledge with a view of the valley below. We ate dinner here and chatted before bed. The orientation is perfect for sunrise tomorrow!

  • Day 21

    Til Shenandoah Skyline Drive

    July 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Camping near Calf Mountain 870.8

    June 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

We were up early as we made an appointment with a Trail Angel to bring us back to the trail. Fortunately the mobile phone finally worked. We were picked up at 6:30 so we needed to get up at 5 to get a free shower at the YMCA facilities. Tom picked us up on time and brought us back.
Julia finally saw a bear!! And it wasn't even running away, just foraging all the berries. So she were able to watch him for about five minutes.

Our camp spot was crazy crowded with insects!! We almost ate them because they fell in our Ramen Soup all the time. During dinner we needed to chase away a raccoon who got a bit bit too noisy. So we just wanted to tuck in our tent.

    4. Tag Appalachen: Nebel

    October 22, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C
