    I had two reasons to go to Cardiff for the weekend. One was that I'd been watching a Welsh TV series set in the parliament there and it is such an amazing building. And the other was that a Neil Gaiman play was being performed by The National Theatre at the equally amazing Millennium Centre.Weiterlesen

    Today was a ‘people’ day.

    Birmingham does not appear in any of the guide books under the title ‘Places of Natural Beauty’ as do some of the locations we have visited.

    We were here to see people and that inevitably meant sharing meals as well.

    First up we met Kiri Scott (née Mansfield) and little Albert for breakfast at ‘The Two Mugs’. It was lovely seeing Kiri and her growing little boy and we spent just shy of two hours (a) sharing breakfast (b) video linking with her mum, Lisa who was out in the middle of supermarket shopping back home (c) thanking Kiri for her previous Vegemite advice and (d) all heading off with Alby to the local park as he was bored with (a), (b) and (c) after an hour or so.

    We bid Kiri and Alby farewell and drove the short distance to 404 Shaftmoor Lane for our prearranged visit to the Christadelphian Office at 11am.

    We were warmly greeted by Kate at reception, then an obligatory cup of tea with Bro Andrew Bramhill and Bro Roger Long.
    Bro Andrew then gave us an extensive tour of the workings of the office. Of particular interest were some of the historical photographs, Bibles and documents from the days of John Thomas and Robert Roberts which they had especially extracted from the archives to show us.

    We met all of the other staff who were working there today, including Bro Jeremy Thomas who is stepping into Bro Roger Long’s Assistant Editor role due to Bro Roger’s imminent retirement in a couple of weeks’ time.

    We didn’t quite get through the tour before Bro Andrew looked at his watch and decided that we all needed to leave immediately for our 12.30 lunch booking at a favoured restaurant about 15 minutes drive away. There we enjoyed an excellent meal with their equally enjoyable company with wide ranging conversation and lots of laughs along the way.

    After our lengthy lunch, we returned to the Office where Bro Roger took over as ‘tour leader’ showing us some of the items of interest that we hadn’t had time to inspect before lunch.
    Back down to the ‘shop’ area where Loriene purchased and ordered some children’s books for the grandkids and a few other items, then it was time to leave, thanking them all for their hospitality and making special arrangements for our visit today.

    We left Birmingham at about 3.45pm headed for Cardiff in Wales. We knew we had crossed into Wales when we (a) drove across the very wide River Severn and (b) could no longer understand most of the words on the road signs. We arrived at our accommodation at just after 6pm, again with no sense of feeling like we have any need of dinner!
    It’s turned out a beautiful evening so we might go for a bit of an exploratory walk this evening to get our bearings before having a better look at Cardiff tomorrow.    Weiterlesen

    Weekend around Wales

    📌 We had both planned the weekend off to go and see the wombats on their home soil and they were down in Cardiff. Chloe made her way to Neath and we headed off to explore Cardiff for the afternoon. We went and tried the renowned Welsh cakes at the Cardiff market where they were making 100s fresh in all different flavours, we had a quick peek at the castle and arcades and then we headed out for a couple of drinks at the breweries before the show.

    📌 The wombats were excellent as usual, and it felt the crowd were really into the older songs which we loved, particularly given out experiences with UK crowds have been a little lacklustre. The show went for a good 2 hours and we left satisfied on a train full of drunks.

    📌 The next day was quite sunny so we headed down to Swansea and then onto a little coastal section known as the mumbles, a little town adjacent to the Gower national park. We had a wander around the pier and enjoyed a a short walk along the rugged coast lined with beautiful yellow flowers. On Sunday we chilled out and enjoyed relaxing, it was another nice weekend together before Chloe headed back to Oxford, and also nice to see more of Wales before finishing up in Neath.     Tout compte fait, le patron du camping nous a trouvé une place pour une nuit de plus. On en a profité pour faire notre lessive. L’après-midi on est allé faire un tour à vélo jusqu’à la Marina.

    Cardiff (Hauptstadt von Wales) Tag 2

    Als erstes müssen wir unseren Notplatz verlassen, der sich eigentlich als Behinderten-Stellplatz herausgestellt hat. Habe ich nicht gerafft. Ich dachte noch so: Schau mal der einzige Platz mit direktem Wasseranschluss und Entsorgung.

    Wir ziehen ein paar Meter weiter, was natürlich okay ist.

    Anschließend Frühstück und dann eine große Hunderunde auf einem riesigen Rasenfeld mit etlichen Fußball- Cricket und Baseball Feldern.
    Genau das richtige für Gonzo. Auf glattem Rasen dreht er so richtig auf und rennt wir der Teufel, hin und her.

    Heute wollen wir mal zum Hafen und das ist zu Fuß über 1 Stunde Fußweg. Daher bleibt Gonzo ausnahmsweise mal im Wohnmobil. Kein Problem, denn es ist heute auch nicht sondern ich warm. Wir sind auch nur 2 Stunden weg.
    Ich nehme den Elektro Roller und Gabi das E-Bike. Gut so, den die Strecke dahin ist nicht besonders attraktiv und zieht sich.

    Wir kommen am Wales Millennium Centre, eines der Wahrzeichen von Cardiff.
    Auch eine norwegische Kirche befindet sich in der Bay.
    Weiter zum Technik Museum wo man viele Experimente selber durchführen kann, welches aber heute geschlossen ist. đŸ˜«

    Weiter geht die Tour, aber zurück Richtung Innenstadt und zwar zum Nationalmuseum.
    Durch den Sophia Garden, eine riesige,schöne grüne Anlage, geht's zurück zum Wohnmobil.

    Den Rest des Tages verbringen wir mit Planung wie es weitergeht, Bespaßung von Gonzo etc.

    Ein Wort zu walisischer Sprache.
    Hier werden z.b. alle Schilder in englischer und walisischer Sprache gedruckt.
    Ein Beispiel für die Unterschiedlichkeit gibt es hier unten. Man kann aber keine Zusammenhänge der beiden Sprachen erkennen.

    Last day of the Wales tour. From Tenby to Cardiff. A cooler but very pleasant day. We had a stop at St Fagans living museum. Look it up. Saw life through the Welsh ages, from stone age to 1950's. Really interesting in beautiful surroundings. Tonight I do nothing and go no where. Tomorrow morning I collect the rental car and sleep a second night in Cardiff.Weiterlesen

    In Wales angekommen, war die Hauptstadt Cardiff das erste Ziel. Mit dem Rad ging es vom Stellplatz entlang des Taff Rivers zum Hauptbahnhof. Von dort dann zu Fuß zum Hafenviertel an der Cardiff Bay. Dann wieder zurück und noch einmal durch das Zentrum. Ausser der Cardiff Bay hat die Stadt nicht so viele Höhepunkte zu bieten. Gerade zurück im Camper war das Gewitter, das man schon erahnt hat da. Schwein gehabt! War ein interessanter und kurzweiliger Besuch.Weiterlesen

    Torchwood Hub

    Torchwood Three, dessen Basis auch als Torchwood Hub bekannt ist, dient in erster Linie als Überwachungsstation für einen Riss in Zeit und Raum, der durch Cardiff verläuft. Die Aufgabe von Torchwood Three besteht darin, den Riss zu überwachen und zu kontrollieren und zu ergreifen, was durch ihn kommt. Touchwood Slogan: "If it's alien, it's ours". Der Hub befindet sich unter dem Roald Dahl Plass und kann über einen „unsichtbaren Aufzug“ im Plass betreten werden, der wegen des an dieser Stelle vorhandenen Wahrnehmungsfilters nicht sichtbar ist.

    In Torchwood: Children of Earth (2009) wurde, der Hub zerstört, Ianto starb und Captain Jack Harkness verließ die Erde, sodass Gwen als einzige verbliebene Torchwood-Agentin übrig blieb.

    Da musste ich natürlich hin, als Touchwood und Doctor Who Fan. Schade war gerade der Aufbau für eine Veranstaltung, so dass ich nicht an den Wasserturm mit dem verstecken Eingang heran gekommen bin. Aber der Hub ist ja eh kaputt, schade!    Weiterlesen

    Pause technique vers Cardiff - 30km

    Après une nuit mouvementée (l’hôtel réservé en urgence à Swansea n’était vraiment pas terrible), nous arrivons comme prévu à Cardiff en début de matinée.

    Nous montons sur les vélos pour faire la quinzaine de kilomètres qui nous sépare de l’atelier de vélo où nous avons pris rendez-vous pour faire purger nos freins.
    Le mec de l’atelier nous attend comme prévu, nous déchargeons tous les sacs de nos vélos, ce qui nous prend à chaque fois une bonne trentaine de minutes, voire plus.

    Sans nos fidèles destriers, nous sommes à présent à pied ! Nous commençons par gravir la Caerphilly Mountain (ou plutôt colline) avec une soit-disant belle vue sur la vallée et Caerphilly. Manque de chance, la ville est étendue et industrielle, nous avons vu mieux.
    Nous descendons ensuite jusqu’à la ville de Caerphilly et son château en ruine en passant par un terrain de golf magnifiquement entretenu (à noter qu’ici chaque ville, même les petites, ont leur terrain de golf).

    Après un déjeuner rapide au soleil, les vélos sont prêts, alors nous reprenons la route jusqu’à l’atelier pour les récupérer et redescendre à Cardiff.

    Cette journée est ensuite consacrée à la lessive : nous avons besoin d'un séchage record en moins de 24h, vu que nous reprenons la route dès le lendemain !    Weiterlesen
