    The Wellington Quarry, Arras, France

    June 25, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

This afternoon we toured ancient caves at the city of Arras. They were originally constructed in medieval times. During WW1 the Australians build 20 km's of tunnels connecting them all. By times over 20,000 soldiers were living in these tunnels and caves. Doug's Great Grandfather John Kennedy lived in these tunnels from April 1st through the 5th in 1918. So far two carvings from his battalion have been found in the tunnels.Read more

    Place des Hero's, Arras, France

    June 27, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This is the Grand Place and Place des Hero's. Basically the town squares of Arras. We were lucky and hit market day. The foods in the booths were amazing. Much of the buildings were destroyed in the two world wars and then rebuilt. There's still bullet holes in the columns. John Kennedy spent a day during the war in one of the buildings in the Grand Place.Read more

    Les Boves (caves), Arras, France

    June 27, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

There is a cave and tunnel system under the village of Arras dating back to the 1100's. It was very interesting touring and hearing if it's various uses throughout history. Of special interest of course was the fact these were part of the system that housed 24,000 men during WW1. This meant all these men went undetected by the Germans. When it was time for the battle they all poured out of various entrances right in front of the unsuspecting Germans and they won the battle of Arras.Read more

    Le Foucrepes Restaurant, Arras, France

    June 30, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We were reasonably sure this would be our last dinner in France so we decided to walk to the creperie in the Petit Place for dinner. We ate outside facing the square. In the middle of our first course we heard bagpipes in the distance. Eventually a pipe and drum band came around and into the square and stopped right in front of us (they were going into the restaurant next to us). As we finished our desserts they got into formation again and performed a whole show in the square. They were bearing flags from Canada, France and Britian. Amazing Grace was fantastic to hear like that while you stood in the very square where John Kennedy had been. What a fantastic end to our stay in Arras!!Read more

    Town Hall Belfry, Arras, France

    June 27, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Doug went up to the belfry of the town hall but I did not. If you look very closely you can see me in the middle of the town square in the one picture he attached.
