St Jean PDP the foot of the Camino

      May 10 in France ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

We arrived here yesterday afternoon and got settled in our Airbnb "Plan B" right on the main drag near the hiking store and the pilgrim's office.

We shopped for food supplies for our trek over the Pyrenees, while we washed our laundry in a machine located in the parking lot of the grocery store. We met up with our small group of fellow pilgrims that we will be walking with for the next 4 days, and then enjoyed tapas and sangria and dinner and a sunset walk up to the citadel, then back down to the river to have wine for a nightcap.

Saturday has been a day of preparation for our pilgrimage, starting at 10 am with trekking pole practice session with Nancy our guide until Pamplona. We had lunch at a creperie, and a last minute stop at the hiking store for a few supplies. Now it's time to pack it up, make a picnic for the road, get a hot shower, and a good night's rest before we hit the trail tomorrow. There will be a church service at the cathedral in the Basque language tomorrow for anyone who is so inclined, then we will meet up for pastries and cafe and start our journey up the mountain. I think the weather is supposed to be pretty warm tomorrow hopefully the rain will hold out for later.

St Jean is a quaint mountain village with steep cobblestone streets, wonderful pastries, cheeses, and tons of pilgrims walking everywhere from all over the world. This is the launch pad of the Camino Frances, although some people have been walking through France or other places to get to this point. The Pilgrims office had a line at it when we got here in the afternoon, but we waited until later and walked right in to get our credential which is our Pilgrim passport that we will get stamped each day along our journey.

All of the albuques, or Pilgrim hostels are full, and the restaurants and bars were also full. After dinner it was strangely quiet as Trina, Cheryl and I walked around town. We had all the streets to ourself. I guess the rest of the people were in bed early maybe because they were leaving this morning. That was not the case for us.

The sunset over the mountains was beautiful, it doesn't even get dark until after 9:30 here which is really nice to have the long days. The stars were amazing last night as well, I think the northern lights may be visible.

Ok time to switch our mindsets from vacation mode into Pilgrim mode and hoping for a Buen Camino. ↗️👣🤞

UPDATE: My feet were made for walking!

      May 12 in France ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

These feet were made for walking

Today is the day we are up with the roosters, getting our food together and packing our back pack. “ Cause that’s our business. “

All up in our feelings of excitement and what the wha … why’s ?!?!?🤣

I popping ibuprofen, putting ointment on our feet and drinking water to pee as much before walking.

      Going to church service.

Home for tonight is refuge Orrison
      Stay in this Alburge -

      Au revoir! 👋

WE MADE IT TO REFUGE ORRISON!

Lots of fog and mist. Beautiful scenery. Met lots of folks on the trail. Arrived at the Alburge. Checked in to our bunk rooms, I got the top bunk. They give you a coin for 5 minutes shower (time not water).

We are then immediately drank us some cold beer.in the cafe.

The fog was thick and as we got to the top of ORRISON. The owners are a married couple and their two sons run the place:

      They served a pilgrim meal.

Puree vegetable soup. Two servings. So much flavor and depth.

      French baguette

A bowl of white beans lots of flavor

      Three thinly sliced of meat.

      Glass of red wine.🍷

At the end of the dinner the owners come out and we thank them for great hospitality and they explain a. Tradition which is that every one stand up and share why they do the Camino. Everyone spoke in there antithesis languages. French, Spain, Dutch, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Japanese, American, Canada and a few more.

It was a beautiful sharing moment. Deep and heavy at times.

Amy stayed up with the Irish ☘️ and had a few nips! 🤣. I went to bed 🛌

      Day 2

      May 17 in France ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We made it to Madrid!!! Our flight from Chicago was delayed 1 1/2 hours. We arrived with 40 minutes to get from the airport to the train station. Our driver, Mauricio, was determined to get us there on time. We had 5 minutes to spare thanks to a new friend, Scott, who was in the same boat. Once we got to Pomplona, we grabbed a taxi. He drove like he was in the Gran Prix. The switchbacks did not slow this guy down. Final destination for the day St Jean Pied de Port, France. So grateful for a hot shower and dinner. Now for a good nights rest. One more rest day before we start the climb up the PyreneesRead more

      Stairway to heaven/Jacob's ladder (gospe

      June 4 in France ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    • New Friends

      August 29, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

I connected with a woman on the Camino Camigas FB page, while I was planning my Camino. We would arrive in St Jean at the same time. We connected via WhatsApp once in France. We would try to meet up the next day -- which is now today.
TSA would not allow my trekking poles in my backpack, so I left them behind. That is the first item on my agenda today. While purchasing them, three women came in to do the same. As I left the store, I received a message from Monette that she was with several women from the Albergue to going to buy trekking poles. I stopped, went back, and called her name, and she yelled back, Kathie? The four of us spent the day together exploring this quaint town! We went to the farmers' market to buy fruit for tomorrow. Stuck our feet in La Nive River. Climbed the Citadelle. Had lunch and then parted.
Tonight the Albergue I am staying in (Beilari) has a communal dinner, I plan to attend!

I know I am running on adrenaline right now, I feel like if I laid down, I would crash and burn.

      September 7, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Left Paris at 300 mph on the Bullet Train. Once in St. Jean, we visited the Pilgrim office, signed in, and got information. We checked into our albergue, did a tour of town and relaxed with an affordable French wine before we attended the Pilgrim Mass at the local church. We are hoping for a good night’s sleep in our first hostel. Tomorrow the walk begins!Read more
