Once more with wheeling

Our previous journeys brought us to Paradise. Leaving is harder than escaping Devil's Island: instead of guards & guillotines, think friendly neighbors, palm trees, Bocce ball. But adventure & grandkids call. Welcome to "once more with wheeling!" Weiterlesen

Our site is right on the Wind River. We now know why it is named that, it is windy. A chilly wind. A really gusty wind.

Also, Heather likes looking around the camp store when we check in to see what they have, what might be different. Today was a big score for me. The campground’s end-of-season sale had these one-off-kind bear comfy shorts 30% off! We snapped them right up. Question: do they make me look fat?Weiterlesen

Gordon saw a wee little sign pointing to a one-track gravel road, headed straight up a hill just west of town: Scenic Outlook. Why not. We courageously headed up, hoping the car that had preceded us was a local and KNEW that the track was manageable in a car. We put the Hilander in 4-wheel drive for the first time since buying it.

At the top we met two gentlemen outfitted with hiking poles, out for their morning constitutional following their regular coffee date. They gave us lots of tips about where we might go if only we were staying longer. The fellow in the photo reminded me in the process of the correct pronunciation of “creek”: that is, “CRICK.”

They strongly encouraged us to take the-half mile walk out to the end of the table top for some good views. Wow. Glad we could share.

Here are some artistic closeups of plant life. And.... more proof of aliens! The fourth photo shows crop circles, or something like that. (Heather disrespectfully called them parking lot circles.) And the fifth photo shows the tabletop that we drove up to. You will notice how flat the top is, as if the top of a mountain had be removed for some purpose. This is in fact where the crop circles were. And if you look at the photos in the other posts, you will see that a lot of other mounters have have had there tops removed. I suspect that Dubois was the site of an alien space port, the structures of which were scoured away in the last ice age. Goodness... it sends shivers up my spine to think that we were so close to the alien presence here on earth.Weiterlesen

Population 971, elevation 6946 feet, and pronounced “do-BOYS.” Though it is obvious the town’s business relies heavily on summer tourists and fall hunters, it feels genuine and lived in and we had more than the normal interactions with the residents. There were the two gentlemen hiking on the scenic trail just outside of town where we took all the photos of the painted hills.

There was the proprietor of the local wine store who managed to fill his postage stamp sized establishment with 2 of everything, and I’m not kidding. We walked out with three regional brews for Gordon, a lovely Chianti for me, and an explanation why he is able to stock Buffalo Trace bourbon when we have such a hard time finding it in populous Jacksonville, Florida.

There was the woman at the convenience store advertising the largest Jackalope exhibit anywhere.

We especially enjoyed conversing with Monty who owned the jewelry store and art gallery where Gordon bought Heather a gorgeous pendant of Navaho silver with gaspeite. Monte was an artist and photographer, a businessman, a gemologist, a ragtime pianist (if it’s by Scott Joplin he plays it, and a single action pistol shooter. He regaled Gordon with stories of competitions he’d been at where they had to do instant slo-mo relays so people could see what they saw. He also gave Gordon tips on where he should go to get a nice custom- made bowler hat like his. When I snapped a picture of him and then asked permission, he said sure, it happens all day long.

The headline was too good to waste. We had to break camp in the rain, but we’re promised by NOAA clearer skies ahead. Well, yes and no. Spotty. And just when we thought we were out of it for good, a purple menace formed in the south. As we approached our final destination of Manila, the clouds got bigger and more forbidding with lightening. Thrilling.

We passed through a lot of stupendous scenery, but given the weather, failed to capture most of it.

Gordon sweet talked the office staff, presenting a vivid picture our previous night’s cross-campground trek in the rain and sleet and wind, not to mention side-stepping the fierce killer cottontail bunny hanging out on the volleyball court. He scored us a site with a large tree and right next to the very nice (and very close) bathrooms.Weiterlesen

We didn’t see much of the Flaming Gorge yesterday, but felt recompensed as we drove in full sunshine toward Vernal. There were signs every few miles telling us what prehistoric fossils are common to the area. I was tempted to get out and look at the sign that touted fish scales and teeth.Weiterlesen

Ok, the last two are just cool rocks.

Gordon here... I’m not trying to be an alien crackpot, but just look at those pictures! Antennas, masks, gloved hands... a lot of abduction victims have reported seeing just those kind of fiends. Just saying.Weiterlesen

  • Pintado Canyon

    14. September 2019 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Our drive from Vernal, UT to Grand Junction, CO went through Pintado Canyon. There were about a dozen pulloffs with short walks to see petroglyphs and pictographs. But we gave up after two attempts to see the art. We just could not see the art depicted on the “what you are seeing” signs.

But I did find some lichen circles. I believe that perhaps Lilliputians made the lichen circles in lieu of crop circles with their spaceships. Since tiny 6 inch crop circles would fail to awe and strike fear into the hearts of man, they decided to make lichen circles which would not be wiped out by a careless footsteps of playing children.

    16. September 2019 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

The drive from Grand Junction to Durango took us over the 11,000 foot Red Mountain Pass. We were both feeling a bit short of breath at that altitude. (OK, we were gasping.) We tried very hard to take lots photos to capture the beauty and grandure of the high Rockies. We succeeded in the first part... we took lots of pictures. But we were very disappointed in the RESULTS. Here are some that we liked.Weiterlesen

  • A day in Durango

    17. September 2019 in den USA ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

We began our day with breakfast at Jean-Pierre’s whose catch phrase is, “the FRENCH French baker since 1969.” The setting was beautiful (wood antiques, French paintings on the wall), the food delicious, and the waiters did double duty in off moments playing selections on the grand piano in the front window.

We then moseyed up and down the main street, wandering into jewelry shops, art galleries and some excellent Native American traditional arts galleries. We passed a sporting goods store with a prominent front window display of aerosol cans containing OXYGEN. Apparently Gordon thought I was kidding when I suggested getting a couple. FINE. See if I care when one of us has to be dragged, blue in the face, to Urgent Care.

As it was at least a half hour since our full French breakfasts, we popped into the local Animas Chocolate factory. We were able to view the chocolatier at work making chocolate toffee bark, and then sampled the wares with a couple of espresso sized hot chocolates smothered in whipped cream. Between bouts of licking his whipped cream mustache, Gordon engaged our guide and barista in a lively discussion of all the places both had lived. Heather managed to get a word in edgewise, telling the young man that we shared West Bend, Wisconsin as our birthplace.

Our parking meter was annoyingly running out, so we hopped in the car to find the Pinkerton Hot Springs north of town. While we were admiring the single, but beautiful formation, a young man pulling a lawn care trailer asked us if we were familiar with the area. Following his helpful suggestion, we went a little further up the road to see Bakers Bridge. This is apparently where they filmed some scenes from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, including the iconic leap from the cliff. Amazing how they could stretch the scenery even before CGI. After a bit of searching, it appears they made the leap at Baker’s Bridge, but landing into the river was filmed elsewhere.

After spending the afternoon lounging in the multitude of hot pools, we headed for dinner. We started off with our beers because we arrived before the dining room opened at 5pm. Heather had a very tasty porter and Gordon was adventuresome with an over the top Double IPA with an IBU of 110. For dinner, we started off with a delicious beet salad. Heather then had a very spicy chili relleno and Gordon had scrumptious chicken enchiladas accompanied by a more sedate IPA with an IBU of 100.Weiterlesen

  • Breakfast at the Artesian restaurant

    19. September 2019 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

We enjoyed our dinner so much, we could see no reasonable alternative but to check out the breakfast menu. I have bad news for our friend Carole who appears to be wondering about the cost of all this good eating, but GOOD news for my sister Bonnie who sat with me at the feet of our Scottish grandfather when he opined, “You cannae be a-dietin’ on vacation.” And what was I to do in the face of blue corn and piñon nut pancakes with real maple syrup? Well, what?! Thank you grandpa Nicoll!

After breakfast, we rolled over to check out the gift shop, because you never know. Gordon bought me some of the yummy Ojo brand Desert Sage body care products which I had tried in the spa and loved. (Come on ... no I didn’t EAT them! Though I suppose I couldn’t blame you if you thought I did.) Then we found a real score! A t-shirt that is long enough for Gordon (in a lovely shade of Heather green I might add). This is rare. Gordon is 7 inches taller than I am, and we can wear the same jeans. So now he is a prince of spa fashion, and I smell great!

At the cash register we must have been giddy with our purchases. The young saleswoman asked if we were married. I asked, “Why, do we act like an old married couple?” “No,” she replied. “I’d put you down more as honeymooners.” Well, giddy is as giddy does, I guess.
