Auch in unserer letzten Unterkunft werden wir mit einem leckeren Frühstück verwöhnt. Liana entschied sich heute Morgen für Cornflakes😂 gits jo gar nöd... echt jetzt??? Aber ganz egal. Hauptsache happy😀...
Heidelberg liegt am Neckar. Die Stadt ist bekannt für die altehrwürdige Universität, die im 14. Jahrhundert gegründet wurde. Die Heiliggeistkirche überragt den von Cafés gesäumten Marktplatz inmitten der Altstadt. Die roten Sandsteinruinen des Heidelberger Schlosses sind ein bekanntes Beispiel für die Architektur der Renaissance und stehen auf dem Hügel Königstuhl. Mit der BERGBAHN!!! ging es hoch auf 548 m.ü.M😂 von dort gab es eine superschöne Aussicht auf Heidelberg. Auch schön, die alte Brücke mit ihrem Tor, die über den Neckar führt. Sie gehört zu den bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten und Wahrzeichen Heidelbergs. Sie wird rege für den Fußgänger- und Radverkehr genutzt.
Auch diese Stadt bietet schöne Möglichkeiten zum Flanieren, Spazieren, Einkaufen, Regionales zu geniessen oder Historisches zu entdecken.Read more

University town with the oldest university in Germany, founded in the 14th century. Heidelberg is an important center for science (especially research) and the arts (especially literature). This was the capital of the Electorate of the Palatinate, now part of Baden-Württemburg state.
The 1st picture looks across the River Neckar to Heidelberg with the ruins of the castle above the town. The 2nd picture looks back from the terrace at the castle over Heidelberg.
The 3rd picture is of the town hall on the market square, the center of town. Along one side is the main shopping street in town which is a 1.6 km pedestrian street and is shown in the 4th picture.
The 5th picture is the old city gate at the end of the old city bridge. The past picture is the old university building, now a museum.Read more

We found a beer and food festival in the town, with lovely musical accompaniment froma chap singing 'Lola' on his guitar to a full African-style choir. Crossing the Old Bridge over the river, we climbed nearly 200 steps to the Philosophers Way, before heading to the station to train back to Mannheim. By the afternoon the temperature was sweltering!

In Mannheim, we wandered to Luisenpark to see the Chinese Pagoda, without realising that it was a part of a huge, fenced-off park with payable entrance, and we circumnavigated almost the whole park before we found out! So tired and hot, we grabbed a tram back to the hotel.

Heidelberg Palace

Free birthday breakfast at the hotel this morning, courtesy of a kind member of hotel staff, which was lovely. We then headed out by train to Heidelberg for a day trip. As we walked along the Necker, a triathlon was taking part on the opposite bank, with loads of swimmers in the river.

Heidelberg was beautiful. Set in the hills either side of the Necker, the beautiful and unique architecture of each of the house are overshadowed by the ruined palace. The town centre is equally picturesque, with narrow, cobbled streets lined with old, shuttered buildings. We passed by the Heidelberg University jail, where unruly students were held four four centuries!

From the town centre, we headed up the (steep!) hill towards the ruined palace and its terrace gardens. Even early in the morning it was very hot, and the hill took a while to climb! The view from the terrace was stunning, looking back down the valley, over Heidelberg and back towards Mannheim.

Inside the palace, we popped into the German Apothecary Museum and the Grand Tun, a phenomenally large wine barrel! As an unexpected bonus, included in the ticket was a trip on the funicular railway, so we hopped up one stop before heading back to the main town.Read more

Pic 4 is the smallest of three very large barrels for holding wine. Pic 2 is a real sundial on the side of the wall. Pic 1, look at the plaque above the door. Twins sons of the architect who built this building fell out of its third story window and died. This is his tribute to them. Pic 6 is the king's dwarf drinking buddy Perkeo. A whole lot similar to Tyrian from Game of Thrones.Read more

Rainy but beautiful Heidelberg

Anyway, onto Heidelberg, where we free camp & Amelia and daddy (already kicking himself he didn’t have the weight limit in the Moho for a four wheeled toy) are in luck..right next to a skate park.

After a mini tour to try and find this famous castle, we stop for beer and pizza and decide the cloud is too low, we’ll try again tomorrow. Some great parks on the way home for the kids!

Another quick cycle tour in the morning and we realise that we could see the castle all along...at this point I’ll point out that we are both going old school with phones - just photos and texts to save data for work use!! It’s quite refreshing looking at actual maps in towns and tourist info spots (and taking one or two wrong turns).

Lots of Japanese tourists join us in Heidelberg so after one last skate, we head off to the Black Forest...not quite sure where we’re heading when we reach it, so definitely flying with the wind...

In other news, the ice cream tally is well underway, Toy Story is the in-journey entertainment, and we are slowly (and painfully) figuring out the dimensions of the motorhome (thinking about starting a head bumping/toe stubbing tally to boot!)...Read more

Heidelberg Castle - Appothecary Museum

This museum was set up showing the history of the pharmacy and dispensaries. The collection includes a complete pharmacist’s office, a laboratory, pharmacopoeias, manuscripts, a wide array of vessels, mortars, and technical flasks and over 1,000 raw drugs representing medicine from the 17th to 19th centuries.Read more
