The Black Forest - Breisach and Titisee

      May 11, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Left Basle at 07:00 this morning to sail down the Rhine, actually most of the voyage was down the man made Rhine Canal running parallel to the real river. Seeing a variety of commercial barges and some competitive cruise lines on the voyage whilst descending around 50metres going through 4 locks. We arrived at Breisach just before 13:00. The town of Breisach (means breakwater) was established to take advantage of an island in the Rhine at that location, being identified as a key location on the early trade routes through Europe. The afternoon activity was a tour through the Black Forest to Titisee where they’re ins a glacial lake. Our guides were in traditional local dress, although neither originated from this area one coming from India and the other the Philippines. Various pictures taken on the coach ride including an old traditional design farm building still in use and a small church. Some farms built their own small churches on the farms as in winter they were not able to reach the local village church. Titisee is very much a tourist town, not quite Blackpool as no bingo and amusement arcades, these were replaced by cuckoo clock shops/museum with demonstrations on cuckoo clock construction and their history and importance to the local area. We were warned not to attempt a walk around the lake as the coach would leave before you would get all way around, this is probably because the actual frontage to the lake is mostly privately owned. We eventually found a small public park were we could sit and enjoy the sunshine (did I mention we got to 28centigrade here this afternoon) until it was time to return to the coach via the numerous souvenir shops to return to the ship. At 19:00 we departed Breisach for an overnight voyage to our next stop.Read more

      Breisach, Germany

      October 7, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Arrived in Breisach, Germany in the early morning. After breakfast, we took a guided walking tour of the town which is situated between the Rhine River and the Black Forest. We toured the town's landmark St. Stephen Cathedral which was built in Roman and Gothic styles between the 12th and 15th centuries. It was almost completely destroyed during WW2. Rebuilding took until 1956. There was a farmers market where we had great grilled sausages and beer followed by gingerbread cookies and gelato. Great day.
It was our last night on the ship. Had a farewell drink and thanked the entire staff for a wonderful cruise.
Sailed during the night to Bern, Switzerland.

      Breisach und Neuf Brisach

      November 10, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

      July 19, 2020 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

      Gute Nacht

Riding the Rhine ..Strasbourg - Breisach

      August 30, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Another change of plans meant that we were stuck on the boat for the morning as it sailed down the river to Rhinau. When I awoke the boat was already underway and then as I did yoga it passed back through the Napoleonic era lock while there was a very attractive sunrise. Finally, however we made it to Rhinau and then there was the bikes to unload (interestingly it was the Ghostriders who help with the unloading not the German guests who just waited for their bikes to come ashore and then just buggered off!!!). It was 1230 by the time we were finally ready to head off and the day was warm and windy. First off we left the boat which was actually moored at a lock near Diebelshiem and headed in to Rhinau where we crossed the river by ferry and then headed back up river passing through the Taubergiessen Nature Reserve which was declared in 1979 and comprises 1,700 hectares of meadows, forests and waterways and was really rather lovely. Some of the riders (including Kirstin) decided to stop by a stream to lunch and in Henry’s case a swim. I continued on however, riding through Weisweil where I became totally disorientated looking for the mythical coffee shop (following the pink signs as per Dagmar’s instructions), I ended up following the rwrong route and doing about 10km extra along the Rhine levee into the wind! Finally, I sorted, myself out ending up on the outskirts of Sachbach where I found a beer garden where I ate my lunch and enjoyed a clensing and cooling beer. I then continued on – it what was a bit of a hard slog in the 32-degree heat and the strong headwind - finally reaching Breisach in the late afternoon – I took a brief detour to the supermarket for more wine and then made my way to the boat for dinner (Salad, Broccoli soup, fish and veggies and gateau). I was surprised to beat the rest of the group back although it was only by 20 minutes. When I arrived, we were “double parked” alongside another boat and we had to cross their sundeck and then take a ramp down to the MS Andante.
Kirstin on the other hand had followed the prescribed route from Weiseil through Whyl am Keiserstuhl and Sachbach – memorable incidents of her day included David having an intimate encounter with a strange mammal in his knicks and Henry’s fully clothed swimming experience. She also enjoyed a meeting with some French guinea pigs at a café where they stopped to get a refreshing drink.
