    Staff Blog - Mr Spinner

    July 26 in Germany

Years ago, a friend of mine (the super talented Northamptonshire based composer and multi instrumentalist Philip Bass) said to me, "The symphony orchestra is one of our greatest inventions".
It certainly is, and this tour has seen two remarkable groups of people sing and play some very difficult music amazingly well.
We've been faced with numerous challenges along the way - just one of them being the need to lift the harp up a lengthy staircase in the Archbishop's Palace. Recognising our need for help, a team of student volunteers immediately assembled to help lift our heavy and valuable harp so carefully, it was as if as if they had paid for it themselves.
I jumped at the chance to be a part of this tour, and I'm so glad I did. The team spirit across the entire group of young people and teachers has made this tour an absolute pleasure. A huge thank you to all of the students and staff for all of the unforgettable musical moments from our amazing choir and symphony orchestra. The standing ovations at our concerts say it all.
    Bravo. Encore!

    Wertheim II

    December 28, 2017 in Germany

There was a quite large castle here however it has deteriorated somewhat as some roofs have fallen in. The guide said it is often used for weddings and such functions. We didn’t go up to it as it was quite high above the town. One of these photos shows the ends of steel rods & nuts used to hold the wall up. Finally the Christmas lights were still up so I managed some nice shots of the town at dusk.Read more

    December 28, 2017 in Germany

This is again a medieval city with many buildings made with the timber frame and straw/mud and plaster infill. The tower was on quite a lean, it was formerly used as a goal for drunkard men and arguementative women. But as the guide explained “ in the morning the men would be sober but the women . . .”. Many buildings have second and subsequent floors with larger floor areas than the ground floor so overhang into the streets. This is because local rates were based on building floor area which was calculated by multiplying ground floor area by the number of floors. Therefore the extra overhang of upper floors they had for free. This is a town of glass blowers, many shops with beautiful glass. One of the workers came onto the ship and did a demo for us before we went to the town. Made a killing on the after demo sales and town visit to his shop. Quite pricey though.Read more

    Well I'll be blowed.....

    May 31, 2017 in Germany

After breakfast we were entertained by a glass blowing demonstration. This area is a major area for the glass industry. There are four glass industries - glass instruments (laboratory), medicinal (drug vials), fibre optics and creative (xmas decs, bowls, animals etc).
After an early lunch (all we seem to do is eat!) it was off into Miltenberg. This little village suffered greatly after the 30 years war and couldn't afford to replace its old, medieval heart with its half timbered houses. As a result it looks like it's straight out of Hansel and Gretel. Our guide assured us that we (the tourists) are the lifeblood of the village. The place looks very quaint, but Janette assures me that the shops are excellent.J&JRead more

    Stellplatz Kreuzwertheim

    July 20, 2016 in Germany

Read more
