  • Packing list

    25 Maret 2023, Jerman ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

I've had a packing list 📄 for years, I started it during my studies in the 90s. 🤣

Back then I maintained it with LaTeX so I could easily comment in and out and then print it out. Nowadays it exists in the cloud ☁️ and of course nothing is printed 🖨️ out anymore. No more nice formatting in the 2 columns but what for?

I love my packing list and I extend and optimize it over and over 🤣.

Recently I added 2 things to it: hot-water bottle 🔥 and binoculars 👀 - I didn't have either of these in Hamburg and that's why I'm here, among other things, to take these things with me.

And that's when I met my old friends again: Qietschi and Quatschi 🦆 🦆 . The two have been coming by in the summer for years and temporarily live in the pond 🌊 . Quatschi is the drake and he babbles all the time - he comes to the terrace and babbles until I come out and give him some wild bird seed 🥜🫘.

How lovely that preparing for a holiday can be so nice. ❤️

  • On the road again

    3 April 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☀️ -1 °C

    ❤️❤️💗

  • Hello Mediterranean Sea 🌊❤️🌊

    5 April 2023, Italia ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

The first night was quite cold ❄️, -5 °C, but I slept well. The extra inlet and the hot-water bottle did a good job 🔥. The next night was warmer: 1 °C, I did not even close my sleeping bag and from now on I will have moderate temperatures at night 😊.

Yesterday we drove via Munich 🍻, through Austria 🏔️ to Italy 🍕 and spend the night in Bologna enjoying the Italian sun ☀️, Italian coffee ☕ and for sure Italian wine 🍷🍷🍷.

So now we are at the harbor of Ancona, it's cloudy ☁️ but we‘re ready to leave with the ferry ⛴️ to Greece and the Greek sun ☀️😊.

I'm excited to see what awaits us in the coming weeks 🤩.

  • Chalikouna Beach

    7 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today we went through the mountains and small mountain villages, which was much fun with our truck 🤣.

It was a wonderful journey and I really love the mountain villages of Corfu with their partly dilapidated charm.

Our goal was the Chalikouna beach, which separates Korission Lagoon from the mediterranean sea.

Korission Lagoon is located near the village of Agios Mattheos. It has a surface area of 427 ha and it drains into the sea through a channel which bisects Chalikouna Beach.

The lagoon was created by the sand dunes that cut the lake's basin off from the sea between 140,000 and 250,000 years ago.

The lagoon and its environs are protected by the Natura 2000 treaty, the protected area includes the nearby coastal areas, an unusual forest of prickly juniper Juniperus phoenicea, which is known as cedar, in addition to many sand dunes which reach heights in excess of 15 metres. The lagoon has over 126 species of birds thus it's a great spot for hikes and nature watching.

The beach is a very peaceful and natural beach during this season and also a great opportunity for a hike and a picnic break.

So if you are around here: give it a try!

  • Hiking around Acharavi

    8 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today I did a little hike in the olive 🫒 groves around Acharavi.

It's just the right time for hiking. It's warm and sunny 🌞 but not too hot yet.

But I've gotten a little too much sun 🤪 next time I'll put my hat 👒 on.

Everything is blooming 🌸💮🏵️and buzzing 🐝🦋🪲 - I could have stopped at every corner to watch the insects 😍.

  • Korfu city

    9 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Today we actually wanted to go hiking 🥾 again, but when we stood on the mountains ⛰️ in the rain 🌧️ and only saw clouds ☁️ instead of the sea 🌊, we quickly changed our minds.

So off to Corfu town to explore the city with a rain jacket and umbrella ☔.

The old town is pretty and the people relaxed, but I can't say more about it spontaneously. In short: the appeal of Corfu is not defined by Corfu Town 🤪.

  • Arillas, Afionas & Timoni

    10 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Today I hiked 🥾 from Arillas via Afionas to the double bay 🏖️ of Timoni.

The hike took about 3.5 hours, overcame 350 meters in altitude and was about 10km long.

I went from Arillas first along the coast 🌊 and then along the edge of the village 🏡 up the mountain ⛰️ to Afionas. This is a quaint mountain village and in the summer 🌞, I'm sure it gets flooded by insta junkies 🤡 with selfie sticks.

Luckily there are no instas in the pre-season 🤪, but the effort with which they renovated the village, gives an idea.

From the village there is an steep path to the twin bays of Timonis and since it rained heavily 🌧️ yesterday, the path was very slippery. That's why I didn't do the last piece, but instead stopped for a Greek coffee in a small, cute panorama café. What a view. ❤️🌊⛰️😍

On the way back I went along the coast through olive groves 🫒🫒🫒 and once again I stood in amazement in front of these old gnarled trees🌳. What whimsical shapes! ❤️❤️❤️

  • From Lákones to Paleokastrítsa

    11 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Paleokastrítsa is beautifully situated on the coast and is considered by many Corfiots to be the most beautiful place on earth. However, there is no actual village center there: hotels, houses and taverns are scattered loosely across the grandiose landscape and are often hidden between olive trees and cypresses.

The best view of the bay is from the mountain village of Lákones, also known as the balcony of the Ionian Sea. From here, a footpath takes about 40 minutes down through an olive grove to Paleokastrítsa, while the winding road there is over 6 km long.

I hiked this path today and was very enthusiastic about it - if you are in the area you should definitely walk this route.

Paleokastrítsa is then located directly on a bay. It is further divided into a series of small bays by several rocky peninsulas. Most of the coast is rocky, but in between there are small sandy beaches, many of which can only be reached by boat. Everywhere the lush green reaches right up to the water, in the hinterland the slopes rise several hundred meters high.

In Paleokastrítsa I then sat down in a café right on the beach and enjoyed a frappe.

    What a nice day ❤️❤️❤️

  • From Vátos to the beach of Myrtitis

    12 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Today I hiked 🥾 from Vátos to the beach of Myrtitissa.

The route initially led over paved roads through the nice mountain village 🏡 Vátos and soon the road went over in gravel roads.

As soon as I had reached the hill ⛰️, an impressive panoramic view of the west coast of Corfu offered itself. Through shady olive groves 🫒, the route finally led to the monastery Myrtiótissa ⛪ and on to the same name beach 🏖️. Since it was a windy day, there were wonderful waves 🌊❤️.

At a glance to the monastery, I met Pappa Daniel 🙏, who made a guided tour through the monastery.

The way back to Vátos ran up along the road, later on a footpath through the olive groves 🫒.

The circular route is about 7 km long, takes about 1-2 hours and overcomes 200 altitude.

When we met after the hike for a short picnic at the truck 🚛, an olive farmer in his rusty car 🚙 held next to us. He said that he had already seen us above and handed us a bottle of olive 🫒 oil over: "From me for you and I wish you a good journey," he said and braised away. ❤️❤️❤️

    I love Greeks! 🇬🇷

  • Kanoula Beach

    12 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After today's hike we drove to the beach in Kanoula.

Kanoula beach on the southwest coast of Corfu is a small hidden paradise. On most days its waters have waves.

The relatively inaccessible road to Kanoula beach is another reason that it has not received interventions and tourist infrastructure, access is via a dirt road.

As one reaches it, the view of a kilometre of beautiful sandy beach is simply elating. Best beach for the last night on Corfu. 😍

  • Σαπωνοποιία Πατούνη

    13 April 2023, Yunani ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Today I'm visiting Corfu city once more and I have to change my mind... it's a nice little town with a nice weekly market and cosy Greek cafes just outside the pedestrian zone - just avoid the afternoon and only go there in pre-season 🤪.

While strolling around, I stumbled over Patounis' Soap Factory.

Patounis' Soap Factory is a family business for making pure traditional soap from locally produced olive products.

Their most valued asset is the ancestral recipes and practice that have been passed on from father to son for five successive generations.

Their premises, preserved with the functioning tools and equipment dating from 1891, constitute a living memory of a unique local tradition. Therefore, in recent years the soap factory has become the subject of academic studies while attracting visitors from the tourist and educational sector. It has been a listed monument of industrial heritage with the Greek Ministry of Culture since 2008.

In 2017 the soap making technique of Patounis' Soap Factory was inscribed on the National Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece and the Lists which the relevant Convention of UNESCO has set forth.

  • Travelling by roof tent truck

    15 April 2023, Italia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Here I am, sitting in the truck on my way back to Hamburg, I can see the alps in front of me and soon I will be over the Brenner pass - time to review.

I've always liked road trips 🛣️ 🚒 - this was one of them again.

I often travel around the area with my car and my tent, sometimes I skip the car and use public transport and stay in hostels or airbnbs. This time I‘ve once more been on the road with the four-wheel truck.

This truck is different compared to our own truck. When we are traveling with our own Merkur (Magirus Deutz) 🚒 called „Töffi“, we sleep in the box body: inside, because it is a mobile home: converted.

When I travel with the truck called „Adele“ or her sister „Bärbel“, I sleep in the roof tent ⛺️, because we are often up to 10 people, thus the body is not big enough for everybody to sleep and comfortably sit.

So this time I'm traveling with Adele, it's a Mercedes Benz 1222 and we are 8 people.

Life with Adele mostly takes place outside, because the amount of comfortable seats leave little room for expansion. We have seating for over 20 people, but since we're usually no more than 10 people, I have enough room to spread out on 2 seats and put my stuff in the baskets above my seat.

There are two parts of the box body: the front part, where there are only seats, the refrigerator, the heater, the guitar and the first aid kit - and the back part: some sort of shed, where we store the benches, tables, the dry food, fruit, vegetables, kitchen utilities and tools. Both have separate doors.

So we set up tables and benches, a tarpaulin against the sun or rain and cook on the stool stoves outside. The 12 tents are opened on the roof for sleeping, which takes only a few minutes and offers a lot of space.

    But have a look yourself…
