Heute haben wir Kultur geplant. Für 6 Euro p. P. konnten wir die archäologischen Ausgrabungen und das Museum anschauen. Sehr beeindruckend war das schon. Mit Phantasie kann man sich gut vorstellen, wie dies früher ausgesehen haben könnte.Read more

Day 4
Delphi and The Temple of Apollo

The big ticket item today was our visit to Delphi and the Temple of Apollo and its surroundings. For hundreds of years, Delphi was the cultural and religious center of Greece and considered the center, or navel, of the world!

Delphi was home to the most highly revered oracles of the ancient world, Pythia, priestess of Apollo, whose hight of importance was between the sixth and fourth centuries, BC.

It was a long drive and a warm day, but it was worth it! We were amazed at the views from Mt. Parnassos, the temple ruins, and the atmosphere at Delphi. On our ride, Mariana, our guide, told us stories of Delphi and related Greek myths. We even had a lesson in reading Greek, which helped us at Delphi with some of the inscriptions.

After making it to the Temple of Apollo, a group headed up to the top to see the stadium that hosted the Pythian festival games (similar to the ones held in Olympia). It was a long, hit climb, but worth it! Another group headed down to the bottom and the Delphi Museum.

We all met back up and had an uneventful bus ride back to Athens for dinner. Many of us, including me, had a nice nap! 😁

Spaziergang durch die Ruinen von Delphi

Delphi war eine Stadt im antiken Griechenland , die vor allem für ihr Orakel bekannt war. Seit 1987 gehören die Ausgrabungen zur Liste des der UNESCO.

Einem Mythos zufolge ließ Zeus zwei Adler von je einem Ende der Welt aufsteigen, die sich in Delphi trafen. Vermutlich befand sich in Delphi ein Zeus-Heiligtum und ab dem 8. Jahrhundert v. Chr. setzte sich die Verehrung des Apollon durch und das Orakel entwickelte sich. Das Orakel entwickelte einen beträchtlichen Einfluss bzw. Weissagungsstätte im gesamten Griechenland und wurde vor allen wichtigen Unternehmungen (zum Beispiel Kriege, Gründung von Kolonien) befragt.

In römischer Zeit nahm die wirtschaftliche und kultische Bedeutung Delphis allmählich ab.

Einem weiteren Mythos nach wurde in Delphi die Schlange Python durch Apollon getötet, so dass die Anlage bis zum 6. Jahrhundert vor Christus unter dem Namen Pytho bekannt war.Read more

Visiting the Earth's belly button

Apparently, Zeus (Greek god of the sky) released 2 eagles from different ends of the earth, and they met in Delphi - thereby establishing it as the centre or “navel” of the World. It is also home to the famous Oracle of Pythia - consulted for millennia by kings, heroes, and tourists... there’s not much left to look at, but standing in the shadow of Mount Parnassus, you can certainly see why it inspired awe and worship!Read more

Breathtaking Delphi

A breathtaking final day in Greece at the Sanctuary of Delphi, once considered the center of the world and home to the Temple of Apollo and his earthly mouthpiece, the Oracle. In Philosophy, The Oracle of Delphi is most famous for declaring that Socrates was the wisest person in Athens, which Socrates later surmised was because he at least admitted that he knew nothing (!). Among the ruins of the Sanctuary are the Treasury of Athens, Temple of Apollo, Theater of Delphi, and Stadium of Delphi. Winding your way up the Sacred Way to the Stadium, and with its stunning views of the valley below, it's easy to imagine why the Ancients considered this location to be especially sacred. Our tour group also stopped into a very nice museum, although I haven't posted any pictures of that, and on our return to Athens, we made a quick visit to Arachova, another small town perched on the mountainside just outside Delphi.Read more

Exploring Greece!

Finally headed to Athens to lay some groundwork for the study abroad trip next May. It will mostly be checking out the logistics--the condition and location of hotels, whether I can do two sites in a particular day, etc. But of course I will also be enjoying myself as much as I can. I hope to explore the Koukaki and Psyrri neighborhoods, which are my choices for the hotel area; of course the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and other "biggie" historical sites; see what I can make of the archaeological remains of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum; take in one day on the Greek Island of Hydra; and of course enjoy some traditional Greek street food, contemporary cuisine, fine wine, and ouzo!Read more
