      Greek feasting with Angelique

      July 7, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

Kalimera. We only travel in style now so today we were picked up by a flash Mercedes van to go to Parikia for a Greek cooking class at the Onira hotel.

We made our Greek feast in an outdoor kitchen at the hotel with the benefit of being able to jump in the pool when the kitchen got too hot. Keyala and Ariah made tomato fritters, India made spanakopita, Dale made pork Tigania and Kylie made her favourite Orange pie (portokalopita). Everything tasted better than the restaurants and we’re thinking a Greek themed Christmas is on the cards.

Our chef teacher was Angelique, a Dutch lady who has lived between Holland and Paros since 1999.

We feasted on our creations with Greek beer and wine for lunch and also had enough to stash in our Tupperware for dinner.

      Paros - Parikia

      July 16 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

Heading South today should have been an easy sail!
Unfortunately not! As we unfurled the genial there was a loud ping as the halyard snapped and the sail came straight down, unfortunately over the side of the boat. Eric quickly put Carla in reverse whilst Cath and I tried to haul it back in. It was eventually a 3 man job as it quickly filled with water. Once safely back on board we tied it all up and continued on with just the Stay sail. A trip up the mast for Eric, in harbour when the wind and seas calm down.
Still very blowy so we decided to stay a 2nd day. Eric played with his tools on board whilst Cath and I wandered around the Greek lanes and had a girlie swim. Not sure who was happiest!

      Voyage vers Paros

      September 10, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

      22nd August Paros

      August 23 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Big day today with a tour starting with a walking tour around the castle & the old town of Paros. A short bus ride took us to the ferry to a small island Antiparos this was also a car ferry you walked on with the cars up the vehicle ramp but no where near as steep as the main ferries. A short ride saw us in the town that is meant to be the main place to have Octopus. We walked around the small but picturesque town then thought we should try the Octopus - really not a fan - maybe it was the cooking.... back on the ferry & then the bus to a village in the mountains which was also very beautiful our last stop was the very touristy town of Naoussa where we lost our bus to come back - fortunately we weren't the only ones as even the tour guide couldn't find it - think the driver had gone for a nap somewhere. Finally got back to our hotel so hot so took a swim before heading out for a wonderful dinner on the waters edge.Read more

      Day 2 Paros.

      May 22, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After a great night's sleep and a late breakfast we went in to town and spent three hours in the shops on the harbour. Beautiful narrow paved steeets winding here, there and everywhere. A real maze with so much character. Bought some shirts, slacks and scarves in the shop "Blanc Paros" great quality clothing. Lunch on the shore. The church of Saint Helene was absolutely beautiful and very spiritual.
Back to the hotel for another relaxing afternoon.
Paros people are very proud of their island and are so willing to to help in any way to make you feel welcome.
Paros is very quiet and relaxed compared to Santorini.
Another great day in beautiful Greece.

      Day 1 Paros

      May 21, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Early start, up at 6am, quick breakfast, private transfer to Santorini Port.
Quite an experience a very winding road, snaking down a sheer rock cliff to the Port.
10.10am department on ferry to Paros via Naxos and Mykinos arriving at Paros Port at 1.20pm. Taxi to the hotel.
Paros seems much quieter and less touristy.
Not so the ferry!!!!! Absolutely packed.
Getting on and off was like herding cattle. Not keen on ferries.
Hotel is very comfortable, the room is spacious and the pool bar area is small but very quiet and private.
      Another four days of relaxation.

      Parikia, Paros

      August 29 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

It was a short trip from Milos to Paros, so we stopped twice to swim and snorkel. The water is about the clearest blue I've ever seen and that's saying something. There's not a lot of fish to see. And the ones I saw were not colorful and were pretty small. I did see a very small flounder though.

Wow. What a difference. Parikia, the main town in Paros, is the most beautiful Greek town we've been in so far on this trip. And that might have something to do with the Venetians who ruled here during the crusades and had lots of money from all their looting and trading.

We found an excellent restaurant and ordered sea bass and a traditional dried mackerel. It might not sound good by my description but it was delicious.

This is one of those island cities that is just fun to wander around and get lost in. There's narrow lanes and lots of beautiful flowers. All the buildings are white and the shutters and church roofs are blue. It's what people think of when they think "Greek Island."

It's the end of the high season so it's busy but not quite as busy as I expected. A lot of Southern Europeans take the whole month of August off and now we're at August 30, so I think a fair amount of people are headed back to home and work.

We only had a few hours last night to see the island and an hour this morning to visit a museum. We wish we had more time on each island but this is a small sacrifice to pay for the opportunity to sail around the Cyclades.

Paros is known for its pink marble from a quarry in the middle of the island. I read about and saw many Parian marble statues at the museum in Delphi. The French used this Parian marble for Napoleon's tomb in Paris. We saw that amazing tomb on a visit there at the Hospital de Invalides.

Mykonos is only about 4 hours to our North and that's where we're heading now.

      24th August Milos

      August 25 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

Had 6 hours to fill in from the time we needed to be out of our hotel & when we would be picked up for our next ferry experience. Left our luggage at the hotel & headed to the beach for a few hours where we were lucky enough to find a bit of shade from a bars umbrella. Then had a bite of lunch at the bar that had provided us shade & used their toilet to get changed in. Made it to the ferry & pleasantly surprised when it was a smaller ferry that didn't take vehicles so was easier to board but complete mayhem with the luggage. It was a pretty rough trip & very hot on the ferry then lots of people got seasick. Fortunately I had packed our neck fans in our back pack so think that saved us from joining them with the help of ginger lollies. Finally got to our hotel in Milos after 9.30pm, went out for a quick dinner then unpacked & fell into bed about 12.30.Read more

      23rd August Paros

      August 24 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Had a pretty quiet day as had some washing & emails to catch up on before leaving Paros. Had a few hours on the beach & a nice dinner where the waiter talked us up to an expensive fish - good job Jeff was able to debone it & eat the eyes. Picture shows same setting on the sea & sunset as last night but different restaurant & different coloured wine.Read more

Pretty lazy day today, took a walk along the waterfront of Paros, then spent the afternoon on the beach was pretty hot & no shade so spent more time in the water than on the beach.
