2021-On On to my 100th Country

I started this year having hashed in 93 countries, so the goal was to get to 100 . . . and I did. Finished the year having hashed in 102 countries, adding Ecuador, Colombia, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Czechia, Scotland, Peru, Brazil, and Paraguay. Læs mere

It was an early morning departure for the hour drive up to BWI, and a flight to Tampa. I arrived shortly after Noon, and had to go out and gather flour and chalk for the trial this evening. Also found some lunch, and a much needed haircut, before checking in to my hotel. A quick google recon of the area was next, then off I went to see what I got myself into. Had to prelay the whole trail, since I had not had a chance to do any scouting, and it worked out ok, so here you have . . .

It was a perfect evening for a hash trail (like always), and so many of the gathered pack of about 20 wanted to be the hare. But it was Hazukashii in the end, who took us on a little jaunt near the I275/I4 split. Finding several small parks, and a few empty parking lots, the pack eventually crossed the Hillsborough River and headed north along the Riverwalk, to the N Blvd bridge. The pack enjoyed a refreshing beer stop, before heading back under the bridge towards the night life . . . but no, they crossed an open field, looped around a building, and then headed over for a lap through Highland Park, before heading south and back into the On-In across the street from the start. KISS ran a blistering circle, with plenty of down downs, and fun was had by all. Congrats to the “Heads” who are planning a wedding, with associated bachelor and bachelorette parties later this month. And then we went home . . . 😊

We had an amazing orange full moon in the sky by trails end, but it was all trail before that. A dozen hashers gathered for this night time venture north of St Pete. It was less than a half mile to the first water crossing (not really, but it was marked for a short cut if you did). After a few more zig-zags, the pack found the Turkey Eagle split, which allowed the walkers to cut off well over a mile of trail. The eagles however, got the full 5 miles of joy running through various empty parking lots, and barren sidewalks. Heading north back towards the finish, trail cut under the highway bridge, then through some shiggy stickers, before finding the last swirl back towards the finish . . . BUT, not before one final water crossing just before the finish. Everyone managed to finish the trail in just over an hour, and circle commenced with much rejoicing. Obviously, the hare (Hazukashii) got the first down down, but then we went straight into accusations . . . and there were plenty. The two that actually did the water crossing got a frothy beverage, the late arrivals got theirs, and various other offenses . . . and then the entire pack went on to stay for the on-after at Whiskey Wings. Another great night of hashing.Læs mere

With a tinge of déjà vu, our delighted pack gathered on the shores of the mighty Hillsborough River. Our Halloween hare, KISS, set a multifaceted nighttime costume jaunt through town, to give everyone a chance to show off their stuff (not that way, THAT stuff will be an option for Saturday on the ‘other’ hash). 😃 With the exception of a handful of aw damns, trail was well laid and easily navigated. Those aw damns were; an early cross of out trail and in trail, a lost/missing/stolen on the shot stop (but it probably made a homeless camp happy for an hour or two), a mismarked beer check, you get the drift . . . but all was right in the world, when we all turned up at the on-in and found coolers of cold brewskies. Bum Chum won the best X-chromosome costume, and damned if I know who won the Y-chromosome best costume . . . shit all blended together after the 17 verse of MY NAME IS JACK. Rectal Roommate was almost anointed into MI6 as 009, but eventually was tagged for his 600th JRH3 trail. After dispensing with the circle, most everyone ventured over to Hootch & Hive for fine dining and adult beverages. And that my friends, was all.Læs mere

It was supposed to be a little more risqué, being hosted inside a nudist resort, but the often bawdy hashers turned out to be a bit too timid. Trail was an "inside the park" homerun, complete with a shot stop at first base, a beer stop at second, and jello shots at third. There were a few bouncing boobies, and even less rod and reels around the fishing hole, but it was an excellent afternoon of trail and hash merriment for the pack of about 30 hashers. After a brief circle, the party recessed, and moved over to an outside the park bull pen, where more food and beverages prevailed. Well done to the hares, and fun was had by all.

It was Can’t Find Pussy in a Haystack’s second go round with the flour bag, and apparently it was so messed up, even his co-hare (his wife) did not even show up. Regaling us with his stories at chalk talk, he mentioned we would find some different marks on this trail . . . square, triangles, and . . . circles? This was connected to some envelopes that he had passed out to some of the pack. When we arrived at the mark, the hasher with that shape was to open the envelop, and tell us what kind of a check it was going to be (check back, boob check, song check, etc). Well, that went over like a fart in church for the runners . . . who after playing along for the first couple marks, just blew through the rest of them and ran trail. Other than that, it was a decent night time trail, good enough that some of us probably would have enjoyed to run on a bit longer. In a rare twist, we actually had THREE five timers, that were presented with their coveted whistle that they will be required to carry on future trails, and BLOW their brains out alerting their fellow hashers of the current trail status . . . two toots for a blob, three toots for a true trail . . . and one long blast for false trail. Other than that, circle was short and semi-sweet, and we recessed to the local bar that have cheap but decent food, cold beer, and it was live mike night, so we had a ragtag band on stage giving it their all. We also found the dart boards, and had a few rounds of embarrassment. Good fun on trail, and good times with good friends.Læs mere

After a full day of rain on Friday, and cooler temperatures on Saturday . . . it was nice to get out in the sunshine yesterday for this joint running of these two hash clubs down in Sarasota. Metawhorical Sunshine & Tainted Love hared shiggy laden trail of about 3 miles, that the pack of just over a dozen enjoyed. Most of us ended up covered in stickers collected in the underbrush, and I hope there was no poison ivy in there . . . cause my legs are starting to itch. We had two water crossing, first was just after the shot stop and only about knee deep to a tall Lumber Jack, the second most of us could jump over. Back in the parking lot, old Sunday School Stroker continued to refine his RA skills by leading circle for the distribution of cold beverages. After that trauma, most of the pack rejoined to Whiskey Joe’s for dinner and post hash libations. And a good day was had by all.

We also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the FIRST hash club in the United States . . . the Fort Eustis H3 ran their first trail 50 years ago on . . . 8 Nov 1971.

While I am at it, let’s also wish a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the world’s oldest active hasher . . . "Sir Nookey" . . . of the Edmonton H3, who is celebrating his 93rd birthday (DOB 8 Nov 1928). He started his own celebration by haring trail on Saturday for the Edmonton H3.

It was our annual tribute to the Marine Corps Birthday, and Veteran’s Day. Our number 1 Jarhead, Hazukashii did the honors of setting this trail complete with pushup checks, low crawl beer stops, two wall climbs and one repelling off the side of a 7-11. We had over a dozen lined up for inspection prior, only two failed, but with the follow up inspection at the on in . . . the entire pack was standing tall, covered in blood and mud, and whistling the Marine’s Hymn. Well done to the pack. Circle started with recitation of general orders and study of the rank structure, followed by close order drill. In the end, Marco maintained his tight grip on the Gomer Pyle Brainless Award for another week, KISS scored with the best R. Lee Ermey RA / drill instructor impersonation, and the pack graduated to full time hashers. We even had one virgin who was so shell shocked, she may never come back. We then marched to the on after, to the cadence of . . . If you want a piece tonight . . . IF YOU WANT A PIECE TONIGHT . . . Stomp your left and drag your right . . . STOMP YOUR LEFT AND DRAG YOUR RIGHT . . . Sound Off . . . ONE TWO . . . Sound Off . . . THREE FOUR . . . Sound Off . . . ONE TWO . . . THREE FOUR!!!!Læs mere

  • Medellin H3 Red Dress Run

    13. november 2021, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

As hashing resumes once again in scattered areas around the planet, 25 hashers converged on Medellin for the symbolic event for charity, the Red Dress Run. The directions told us to be at the start at 1300, so abruptly at 1430 we circled up for chalk talk. Trail was designed in three phases, the first was prelayed, and the hare followed in trace to the first beer check. And good thing, because there were so damn many people on the streets, it was often difficult to find the marks . . . but we managed. After a 30 to 40 minute painful recess, the hare called the pack back together, and headed out to live hare the second phase . . . in the rain, and by the time 3 minutes had passed, whatever he marked, was . . . as you would expect . . . GONE. A few phone calls and convulsive phone con directions, the walkers ended up in one place, the runners ended up in another, and Mu-sick and I followed the last instructions and ran back to the hotel. 2 hours later, the pack eventually reassembled and had a circle under cover. A few empanadas and several beers later, the chiva (party bus) arrived, and we spent 4 hours driving around Medellin, dancing and drinking, and having a blast in the rain. What a day, bravo to the Medellin H3 for hosting such a crazy event.Læs mere

  • Dinner in Sao Paulo

    18. november 2021, Brasilien ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

So I am here at Hotel Uno Cinco Cinco, and relaxing today, its been raining all day anyway. So I finally start to get hungry, so ventured out to see what was on the street here close. Found a nice Italian restaurant (I have found no matter what the language is in the country you are at, you can always easily order Italian).

Well, I sit down, and the gentlemen comes over and takes my order . . . Spaghetti Bolognaise (it's fairly quick to make, and I'm hungry), he nods . . . then I order the local drink, a caipirinha. So off he goes, and makes my drink. Very tasty. 15 minutes go by, so I ordered another one. Another 15 minutes go by, I am starting to wonder what was taking so long. Anyway, about 45 minutes have gone by, I have ordered my third drink, and finally I ask if the food is coming. He looks at me quizzically, and then I see the light bulb go off over his head . . . he scurries back to the kitchen. Less than 10 minutes later, he comes back sheepishly, and I have a hot steaming plate of spaghetti in front of me. He forgot to take my order to the kitchen . . . worst part about that was, I was the ONLY person in the joint. Hahahahaha, what a day. Dinner was great by the way . . . yum.

After a night on the town, we collected our wits and donned or hash kit, and headed for the bus station. Sparky, one of the local hashers wanted to meet up at the bus station and ride out together, but the pack gathered, minus Sparky. Finally, just after our bus departed (without us) he turned up. So, after a bit longer wait, we found another bus that was going close to where we needed to go for our one hour journey. Fortunately, the hares were sympathetic, and drove down to get us for the final 5 kms to the start. Two hares and a pack of twelve set off on this 10 km trail out past the airport. Three hours and three beer checks later, we had once again returned to the start, where we fired up the BBQ and grabbed a few beers before circle. It was a great day with two old friends, Weeny Schnitzel, one of the hares, and MaBouche. Was also nice to meet many new friends here in Sao Paulo.Læs mere

    24. november 2021, Brasilien ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

After an excellent sleep in Itanhaem, it is now time to move on. It was a full day of travel first by Uber to the bus station, then a 2.5 hour bus ride to Jabaquara, all good. Then it was Uber again for the final 100+ Kms to a hotel near Campinas for a flight out of Viracopos Airport to Brasilia. The whole trip was super easy . . . the whole 200 Kms trip took about 5 hours and only cost about $60 US. Now I am concerned, as I attempted to check in, but the system does not seem to recognize my booking details. May be an interesting morning tomorrow.Læs mere

    28. november 2021, Brasilien ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

What a day, the forecast projected 70% change of rain all day, but yet the RA managed to hold it off throughout. So we had a gathering of 15 hashers to start trail at the Jungle Bar. After the usual berating from the GM, the pack was sent off on trail. With only 5 runners, and 10 walkers, it was an effort for the runners to break the checks, but it all worked out.
We found the first photo stop by the lake, and good efforts from the hares, we all showed up about the same time. From there is was back out in search of trail . . . crossing a couple roads, and grassy fields, the pack eventually found the beer check about a half kilometer from the finish on this 8.5 Km (5.2 mile) trail . . . and then it was on in for multiple air strikes on the beer cooler, as the pack refreshed in preparation for the circle.
Hash Master Opulence called in the hares, yup he was one of them, and we eventually worked over the whole pack. It was a most excellent trail, and the whole pack was so friendly . . . I will DEFINITLY be back to hash in Brasilia again. And that is not even considering that little shindig we have planned for 2023. ON ON!!!
