Der große Tag: Wedding Day 💒

      January 23, 2023 in India ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

      January 22, 2023 in India ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

      Back in Thrissur 🥳

Naja .. Next Hotel: Wir kommen dann erst mal an.Read more

      Engagement party

      December 29, 2024 in India ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Breakfast again dosas, hard boiled eggs and curried vegetables. Jim has had marmite and cheese toasties each morning! Bread very sweet. Today he put honey on his dosas.
The three of us women did a bit of shopping this morning in road side shops. I got three summer dresses for around $20 which included taking the hem up on one. The other two bought some bling to go with their outfits. Afternoon went to beauty parlour and Nikki and Alison got their hair done. Just nails and make up for me-a first! Nails iridescent blue to match my dress! Boys had day at home so a bit of a bore for them but Jim did catch up.on some sleep. Had to be at hotel by 6.30pm. About 120 people drifted in over next hour before engaged couple turned up. Family all in similar colour palette-lavender. Looked really good.
Amazing engagement ceremony and definitely no dowries though most younger people we spoke to still have arranged marriages. Really interesting process. Function was in very nice hotel near by. Very nice venue as usual in middle of lots of shacks etc. Were introduced to most of the 120+ there and a few spoke good English. They all seem to work in IT. Speeches from both James and Shantaran. Exchange of rings, cake cutting, Midhun and Anna feeding each other cake and their parents, then lots and lots of photos. We were all treated as family. A la carte meal and so much of it. Karaoke at the end and dancing. Did the indian dance for Charlie's benefit. Karaoke- what a culture clash but they love it. Young children all seem so confident too. No alcohol at all. Home by 11. Wonderful day.

      Post engagement party

      December 30, 2024 in India ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Bit of a sleep in till 7.30am. Similar breakfast but iddly instead of dosas. Lounged around then tuk tuk to restaurant early and found a bar next door so quiet beer till family arrived. Dark interior of bar attached to Hotel Garuda. Cheap in NZ terms but expensive for India. One 750ml bottle of Heineken 350 rupees. Tuk tuk ride about 1km cost 30 rupees. Authentic vegetarian restaurant that Lalitha had organised. Fantastic experience. Thalli .Individual piles of food placed on banana leaves and we ate with our fingers. Included dried banana chips, dried salty chillies, jaggery, yam curry, pineapple curry, vegetable dishes, a cabbage dish, gourd curry, coconut dish, tamarind molasses, vegetable pickle, dhal. Plus poppadoms. Wow. Also served two small containers of liquid dessert that poured on crushed poppadoms to eat. Very sweet. One condensed milk and rice. Other sugar, flour and coconut milk. Messy but ensure wash hands before and after. Also a small bucket containing an appetiser-salty broth. Other one had buttermilk. Jim struggled with only half an index finger so used both hands! Tuk tuk back to Baby and Madhu's place for cold drinks and tea and we gave out some gifts we had brought. Then ladies over to Lalitha and Shankaran place next door for Chai tea and more nibbles. Was great just to sit around table with Baby, Lalitha, Indira and Vaishu (Baby's daughter) and "chat". Baby good English and Lalitha getting so much better. Such a lovely warm woman. They are all quite tactile and like touching. Men stayed at Baby's for whisky with Deepak and Midhun. Older men don't drink and Midhun won't drink in front of father. Lalitha gave us three women shoulder handbags which I am delighted about and will use. Deepak, Reshmi and daughter Avisha back to Bengaluru tomorrow so said goodbye to Reshmi. Great bossy woman, very bright and helped a lot with engagement organisation. Also good to chat about India with.Read more

      Day at home

      December 27, 2024 in India ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Roger and Alison Thomas, from Caitlins, friends of James and Nicki's arrived 1.30am this morning. Chicken marsala and hard boiled egg curry for breakfast. Sat outside and chatted for a while .Phew still hot and muggy at 7.30pm. You sweat all day and need to constantly drink. Had a walk for about an hour and half this morning and battled no footpaths, heat, noise, rubbish, traffic but interesting to see city at work. Then took tuk tuks to shopping centre again to get dress for Alison, more groceries and lunch at United Coconut That took all afternoon, back on Tuk tuks in rush hour. Organised chaos merging traffic. Back to Midhun's parents for Chai tea and snacks. Just so hospitable. Walked back to accommodation and successfully crossed the road! Another relaxing evening. Amazing to see so many lovely women beautifully dressed up and riding side saddle. Lots of scooters, men will have helmets on and rest of passengers-women and children don't. Takes a while to get used to locals eating with their fingers. They do wash their hands before and after. Toilets interesting as often no toilet paper and there are little hand held hoses.Read more

      Thrissur

      December 23, 2024 in India ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Traditional Kerala breakfast at Delight, rice cakes, coconut sauce and a chilli tomato mixture. Ate pineapple and watermelon prepared again despite advice not too. Very nice. Same taxi driver back to Flora hotel at airport to met Nicki and James. "Calculation" driver's comment. Weaving, accelerating ,talking. Midhun came up from Thrissur to collect with driver. Two hours to get back as very busy roads. Stopped at coconut stall for coconut water, cane sugar drink with lime and ginger. Airbnb interesting with owner staying on site. Off to Midhun's for lunch. Amazing spread. Ate chicken and fish and drank water that had little salt, sugar and lime juice. All the no-nos but seems safe. Well to do family. Waited on. Parents Laleetta and Sankaran. Sister Meneesa. Lots of relatives here. All so welcoming and most speak English. Date and carrot cake plus ginger tea next door at Uncle's place. Then off to Lulu shopping mall looking for sheets and towels. Packed roads, amazing intersections where all converge cars, buses, tuk tuks, motorcycles; just push on and merge. Back here at 6.30pm. Relaxing. Chatting no dinner as full from lunch.Read more

      Heading back to Thrissur

      December 26, 2024 in India ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Jim and I both had interesting massages, mine this morning involved lots of hot oils on head, to help me sleep! Left at 11am. Indian time interesting time. Has been a great opportunity to get to know parents and aunties. Lots of laughs. James got Delhi belly overnight so pretty miserable all day but did stop vomiting this morning. Stayed in bus most of day. Rest of us okay so far. First stop heading home a beautiful Catholic church built of teak. And another wedding going on inside. Third one we have come across in our travels. Then onto elephant park. Sad and dispirited animals but could get very close. A bit of a walk but very slow with Aunts. Back on bus and an hour or so to lunch. The traffic/driving fascinates me. Can't possibly leave a gap! Driver very good but passes at any vague opportunity. Saw some magnificent houses today. Indians like white- clothes, houses, cars. My earlier prejudice has been reinforced-I have felt that Indian women most attractive women on the planet. They are beautiful. Lunch at Pandora, new franchise that was chokka but very nice lunch. 2.30pm. Chicken marsala, vege curry, chicken biryani. Had a lime juice and soda drink that had salt in it. Very odd. Jim and I paid for lunch for all sixteen 6400 rupees. I think about forty rupees to one NZ dollar. Hit rush hour traffic! Mad and entertaining. Four vehicles PLUS motorbike or tuk tuk wide on three lane highway. Ambulance tried to get through- everyone tooting horns. Back to Aunty Baby for Chai tea. Home just before 6pm. No dinner needed.Read more
