    Old city walk part 2

    In Ahmedabad there is an annual kite flying festival. This festival is held next weekend! This is the locals colouring the string for the kite looms. The string is coloured with a chemical product that creates glass shards on the string. The aim of kite flying is to cut the string of other kites to make them fall and have your kite flying the longest.Okumaya devam et

    Riding on an auto!

    The bus can’t get to the narrow parts of the old city, to get back to the bus we experienced our first ride on an auto!
    The streets here are very hectic! There is very limited public transport in this city. So the easiest way for the locals to get around are on smaller vehicles like 3 wheelers and motorbikes or scooters.Okumaya devam et

    Walk along the river.

    While many of the group decided to go to the large western shopping mall, we decided to walk along the river and experience some interesting sights!
    The machine in the water is a rubbish collector. It collects any rubbish floating on the top of the water and puts it in the bin at the bottom of the machine.
    We met some locals during our travels and played some cricket!

    Law Gardens

    The law gardens are a huge community garden! It reminds me of Hyde Park! Which shows the British influence in the community.

    There are children that ask for money in the park and the streets around this area. We met one enthusiastic hilarious little boy who tried to sell us colouring in books for money or food. During our walk to a nearby food stall he was speaking his mother tongue asking for what can only be described as new shoes! It opened my eyes to the fact that the beggars on the street are just people trying to better their own life!! You can see the little boy with a few other childrenOkumaya devam et

    Mahatma Gandi International School.

    The school follows the philosophy of Gandhi with project based learning which covers multiple disciplinary learning areas. The international program used in the primary years like a curriculum is the Cambridge system. This program outlines learning requirements that the students are required to carry out over a 4 or 5 year period. Each grade carries out a single project over the course of a year with the students involved in every step and participating in the planning and direction of their own learning, similar to a student centred or play based learning style in Australia.

    The teachers make home visits to each of the students in their class to outline expectations and assist parents in becoming involved in the learning process at the beginning and end of the schooling year.

    At the end of the school year, the teachers work for another 3-4weeks to reflect on the program and projects completed discussing what would be changed, what worked well, etc for future references.

    Each class has a student council and the younger grades have a duty chart to outline who is responsible for different duties.    Okumaya devam et

    MGIS Yr 2 class

    This class runs from 9-11 with recess between 11-11.30 when the children eat and play before returning to class from 11.30-1.30.
    The older children stay at school until 4pm, the younger children finish at 1.30.

    The project the class is carrying out is a project about their city. This began with the students learning about their own personal history, exploring change through interviews with grandparents and foods of the community.

    The class is planning to end the project with a play about what they have learned about their city.

    The assessment is criteria based, the children and teacher decide if they have met the criteria or not and continue to work towards the completion of the these criteria through activities and projects. The aim of the project is to develop skill levels.

    Yesterday the class visited the flower show as an excursion, today they are continuing this experience with the exploration of plants combining other learning areas like maths through measurement, English through language, science through the types of plants, etc.

    The lesson expanded from drawing a plant in the school yard, to comparing the heights of plants and entering data in a graph to exploring the different types of plants and their similarities and differences.

    The class doesn’t have behaviour issues, the students are all engaged in their learning. When there are issues that the students pick up themselves, they ask for a council meeting to discuss behaviours or issues that arise in the classroom. The council meeting resolves the issues with everyone able to share their opinion and help come up with a consequence or resolution.    Okumaya devam et

    MGIS Kindergarten

    The kindergarten program is more structured than the play based program observed in year 2.

    The students are encouraged to work independently on their counting activity. Putting 1 bead on a single string then 2 beads on the next string, aiming to create string for the kites they will make.

    The children worked on their problem solving skills working out how much glue they needed on their fingertips to stiffen the string and how to thread the string onto a bead.

    This experience was more structured and the children became bored easily, refusing to complete the activity. The children remained seated however they were disengaged.    Okumaya devam et

    Overnight stay.

    The overnight stay was at an educational campsite. This campsite is used for tourists and school groups to share the local area and educate students on appropriate habits.

    The toilet block had a mixture of western and Indian toilets.

    The dorm rooms were like small jail cells.

    We had the option of sleeping on a mattress on the floor or using a bed frame with our mattress. I chose for the more authentic experience of sleeping on the floor! It wasn’t too bad, but having a flat pillow didn’t help my already sore neck and shoulders.

    Raj, the man who runs the campsite explained his reasoning for locking his dogs up. In India there is a large number of stray dogs and they wander around freely, the nature of the Indian people is that if I have too much I’ll give it to someone else who needs some. So it was strange to see these dogs in a cage. When we went on our walk around the local area Raj explained how farmers use dirty electricity to make electric fences around their crops, these fences are to stop the buffalo and antelope from eating their crops but have killed lions, leopards and people in the past, so it’s not safe for his dogs to be free, incase they chase something into this area and get killed.     Village school!

    On our hike from the campsite around the local area we visited a village school. The school ranges from grade 1-5. The children only learn their mother tongue (Gujarat) and their linking language (Hindi) until standard 5 where they are introduced to English.

    The school has 72 students that attend from 10.30-5pm in winter and 7-12 in summer.

    For the students to continue their schooling hey have to travel to the next village where their school ranges from standard 1-12.    Okumaya devam et
