    Garnish Island, Bantry e rientro

    Stamattina alzati prima del solito per andare verso la floreale Garnish Island. Con un breve tragitto in traghetto e avvistamento fochine ciccione siamo arrivati a questi giardini bellissimi galleggianti. Dopo aver girato tra i diversi fiori, aiuole e piante abbiamo visitato la dimora dei proprietari dell'isola, morti intorno agli anni 50, e mantenuta dal giardiniere e dalla donna delle pulizie. Questi giardini sono sempre stati aperti al pubblico, tanto che personaggi inglesi come Agatha Christie e Virginia Wolf ne sono stati ospiti, ma lo stato irlandese li ha presi in carico dopo la morte degli ultimi abitanti della dimora Bryce.
    Abbiamo salutato il buon Ben che è rientrato prima e poi proseguito verso la ridente Bantry per un pranzetto veloce con seguente visita alla Bantry estate, una piccola reggia privata con giardini.
    Verso la via del ritorno, piccola sosta ad un oratorio di Guagán Barra in mezzo ad un laghetto molto bucolico e abbiamo così salutato questo viaggetto in compagnia del sole e amici preziosi ☀️🏞️

    A surprisingly comfy flight

    May 4 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

    The flight turned out to be only about half full... I sat with anticipation and my knees pressed against the chair in front of me as the last few folks boarded. Only enough room under my legs for my bag, leaving little space for my feet. I hoped the center row across from me wouldn't be claimed by a late boarding passenger or an antsy one sitting near me. I asked the flight attendant if I could move and she sternly told me they weren't dont boarding yet... after biding my time and making sure the coast was clear I lept across the aisle. Staking my claim to an entire row while politely trying to look as tall as I could, hoping to dissuade any fellow seat swappers from wanting to share the precious foot room with my size 12 flippers. Alas! Lift off! Two glasses of wine, my iPad and an entire viewing of Band of Brothers and ill be in Dublin! Hopefully i get a long winded nap. That's what the wine is for.Read more

    Kilkenny to An Rinn /Dungarvan

    We continued our exploring of Kilkenny this morning. Up to the Black Abbey that is celebrating 800years of community use this year. Beautiful windows and organ!!
    Then on to see St. Canice's Cathedral and the Round Tower. We climbed to the top of the roubd tower... it is 30m tall, had 121 steps and was built in 1111!!!! Obviously built and used by little monks as the doorway was tiny... not even my shoulder height and as we got to thetop it got thinner and thinner. Gary and I struggled to squeeze through the entrance to the roof. AMAZING 360⁰ view from the top!!!
    Back down and into the cathedral. Gorgeous stained glass windows and organ again as well as numerous crypts with effigies on them. A priest from Rome offered to buy the main windows for the equivilent to £1mill to take them back to Rome and the monks declined. 2 years later Oliver Cromwell arrived and destroyed as much of the cathedral as he could... including the windows. He opened the cryots and threw the bones to the dogs and allowed his horses to drink from the baptismal font. He also knocked down the top of the tower. He was a nasty man. There were many slabs in the floor dedicated to different people... too many to remember the stories of. One crypt was of John Butler 9th Earl of Ossary had a huge tomb with a magbificient effergy... he died and was burried and only his heart was brought back to Kilkenny... a huge tomb for a heart.
    We wondered back past thr last of thr medieval mole to the RV... and off we set... to Waterford.... until we saw some vintage cars going in the opposite direction to us.. so we decided to follow them... of course. We backtracked and chased them for 30kms before they ended in Stoneyford. We said hello, showed them a picture of our cars and we were invited to join them for tea and scones... they were a mixed car club so there was everything for a 1926 Buick, a 1926 Austin 10 through to Mercedes, MGs, BMWs, Worsleys, Fiat500, VW beetle, Morris 1000s and a Morris Traveller... up to about late 1980s cars. About 30 cars in total. This was their annual run.
    Tomorrow we plan on visitong their carshow in Clonmel. We may have even got another entrant for our 2026 rally in Albany (they arent Model A owners but they are excited about it)
    We said farewell and headed to Waterford... did a tour of the House of Waterford Crystal and dreamedbof the pieces we'd like to buy.... even duty free they were a dream.
    Decided to drive a little further down the coast to park up... Dungarvan... went to one RV site that has space for 10... there was over 30 already there... so we went to the lookout on the other side of the bay... in An Rinn... space for 5... only one other RV and the view was beautiful... sucked in other RV owners... you missed out.

    Mizen Head, spiagge e good vibes

    Dopo matrimonio e festicciola di ieri, stamattina ci siamo svegliati e siamo partiti presto verso le penisole a ovest di Cork.
    6 compagni di viaggio e le prime 4 ore e mezza di macchina.
    Abbiamo fatto due sostine veloci lungo il tragitto e, dato che siamo arrivati ad ora di pranzo ci siamo fermati a mangiare in un posticino con un piccolo camioncino di street food e i tavoli all'aperto, approfittando del sole.
    Finiti i panini siamo andati verso la punta più a sud -ovest: Mizen Head. Lì abbiamo visto diverse fochine e anche uno squalo elefante (Basking Shark), dato che adesso è appena iniziata la stagione. Possono raggiungere i 7 m di lunghezza e sono belli sdentatini quindi non pericolosi per l'uomo, si nutrono di plankton. Dopo aver esplorato la penisola su per giù, abbiamo proseguito per la spiaggia di Barley Cove, tra due promontori e molto collinare. Infatti per arrivare alla riva dietro la collina abbiamo dovuto guardare un un fiumiciattolo di acqua salata con la bassa marea, e scollinare camminando su infinite cacche che abbiamo scoperto essere di centinaia di conigli che abitano il posto.
    Pucciati i piedini, siamo andati in alto verso un punto panoramico per vedere un'altra penisola, e individuato dall'alto un paesino carinissimo ai confini del mondo da andare a vedere, Crookhaven. Passandoci abbiamo trovato musica dal vivo e praticamente tutta la gente del paese a godersi il sole sul mare e quindi ci siamo fermati anche noi per bere qualcosa.
    Dopodiché via verso la casa per la notte s Skibbereen, fermandoci a fare spesa e mangiando na bella bistecca tutti insieme.    Read more

    Slán leat☘️🇮🇪💚Auf Wiedersehen Irland

    Heute geht's wieder zurück auf den Kontinent. Nach genau 8 Wochen. Mir kam es mehr wie 8 Tage vor. Nein, stimmt natürlich nicht wirklich, aber irgendwie doch...
    Große Lust zu fahren habe ich nicht...dazu gibt's viel zu viel, was man sich noch ansehen kann. Sogar hier im Süden, den ich eigentlich weniger spannend als den Norden finde, fallen mir bei der Fahrt einige interessante Ziele ins Auge: eine Glasbläserei, ein Hofladen mit überwiegend Ziegenmilch-Produkten.
    Aber ich habe einige Termine, der Camper braucht die Werkstatt und auf's Motorradfahren freue ich mich auch.
    Also alles wegräumen, nochmal Wasser auffüllen, Abwasser und Müll entsorgen und auf geht's Richtung Rosslare. Im "Culletons of Kilrane" ( hier habe ich auch schon bei der Ankunft übernachtet und gefrühstückt) esse ich zu Mittag, bevor es zur Fähre geht.
    Das Einchecken auf die Fähre läuft glatt - noch nicht einmal meine Buchungsbestätigung wird kontrolliert; nur der Personalausweis. Ich komme als eines der ersten Fahrzeuge an Bord und habe Zeit, meine Sachen zu organisieren. Nur eines wundert mich: normalerweise ist auf der Bordkarte die Sitzplatz-Nummer im Ruhebereich vermerkt. Naja - vielleicht wissen die hier, daß sich ohnehin niemand daran hält. Aber wie sich herausstellt , ist das nicht der Grund. Nachdem ich den Raum mit den Ruhesesseln nicht finden kann, frage ich eine Angestellte. Sie versteht mich nicht, schickt mich 2 Decks höher. Auch hier kein Erfolg. Ich bleibe erstaunlich gelassen - irgendwie macht sich die Auszeit insgesamt und Irland im Speziellen positiv bemerkbar. Die 3. Angestellte klärt mich auf: auf dieser Fähre gibt's keine Ruhesessel. Daher die Bezeichnung "Deckspassage". Man sucht sich irgendwo einen Platz, an dem man sich wohlfühlt. Ok - auch gut...ich denk, ich bin auch dafür gut genug ausgestattet. Nach kurzer Suche findet sich eine Ecke beim Shop, die durch ein Ausstellungs-Vitrine und 2 Tische mit ein paar Sesseln recht gut abgetrennt ist. Die Sessel kann man bewegen, die Tische nicht. Ich "sortiere" alles so, dass man die Tische noch nutzen kann, aber 2 Sessel eine Verlängerung zur Vitrine bilden. Das sollte reichen. Die Fähre ist auch nicht wirklich voll. Und mal sehen - vielleicht ziehe ich wirklich noch an Deck um, auch wenn ich nur den dünnen Schlafsack mitgenommen gabe. Das Wetter soll sehr ruhig werden. Erstmal gibt's ein letztes Guinness, das ich entspannt auf dem Sonnendeck genieße - die Abendsonne macht es möglich. Immerhin bietet Stena Line kostenloses Wlan für die gesamte Überfahrt an - wenn auch mit bescheidener Geschwindigkeit. Aber für die Aktualisierung vom Tagebuch reicht es.    Read more

    Day 7–8

    Dublin

    May 1 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    Am Donnerstag ging es wieder einmal quer durch Irland zurück nach Dublin🚘. Angekommen in Dublin machten wir noch einen Ausflug an den Hafen, bevor wir unser Auto zurückbrachten.
    Abends erkundeten wir das lebendige Viertel rund um die bekannte Temple Bar und stürzten uns in das Nachtleben von Dublin🍻🎵. Zum letzten Mal genossen wir auch den typischen Pub Food bei (zu lauter) Live Musik.🍔🍟
    Dementsprechend ging der nächste Morgen etwas gemütlicher los. Die verbleibenden Stunden nutzten wir für eine Shopping & Sightseeing Runde.🛍📚
    1017 Kilometer, 5 Unterkünfte, 67 Cider, einige Oreo's und viele unvergessliche Momente später sind wir nun auf dem Rückweg in die Schweiz.🇨🇭    Read more

    Let the real adventure begin.

    Did some food shopping, checked out of the hotel, picked up the motorhome and hit the road. Motorhome is very basic... but it will do.

    Having trouble with phones and internet so it is making navigation interesting.
    Spent the night outside the Moone High Cross Inn... a little pub suggested to us by the service station owner. Met 2 Yorkshire gentleman, Dermitt and Guy, and chatted for about 4 hrs on Australia, sorts, families etc etc.

    Today we traveled to the Cliffs of Moher.
    One of the most unique and precious aspects of the cliffs is the local wildlife that calls them home. Those with a love of bird-watching will be spoiled here: think countless sad-eyed puffins; elegantly dressed razorbills; chattering kittiwakes; and if you’re lucky, even an elusive peregrine falcon.

    The surrounding landscape itself is a marvel of natural delights, with delicate sea campion, blushing sea pinks and wildflowers dotting the springy coastal grass around your feet. On a calm day, keep an eye out for any ripples in the water – breaching basking sharks and friendly dolphin pods are a common sight. Tonight we are staying in Ennis.    Read more

    Day 6

    A Day in Galway

    April 30 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

    Heute morgen begann der Tag etwas später als sonst. Nach einer wechselwarmen Dusche und einem ausführlichen Frühstück startete unsere Galway-Entdeckungsreise mit dem Hop-on-hop-off-Bus. Dieser führte uns einmal quer durch Galway, vorbei an alten und historischen Gassen, zum sehr auffälligen “Spanish Arch”, entlang der Promenade und vorbei am Stadion bis zum Quartier Cashelmara und dann wieder zurück, durch den Golfplatz bis zur Uni und der “Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven & St Nicholas”.

    Nach dieser sehr sonnigen (fast schweisstreibenden) Tour ging’s zu Fuss weiter durch die Innenstadt. Jeden Wollpulli-Laden und jeden Book-Shop abgeklappert, brauchte es in der brütenden Hitze irgendwann eine Ice-Coffee-Pause.

    Mit Büchern, Spielen und Strandtüchern bewaffnet suchten wir uns ein bequemes Plätzchen an der Flussmündung.
    Nach ein paar Runden “Phase 10” an diesem sehr belebten Plätzchen, wurde es uns zu heiss (Um halb 6 brannte noch immer die Sonne nieder, als wär es 12 Uhr Mittags.)

    Ein erfrischendes Pint Cider und ein leckeres Znacht mit äusserst guten, schaligen Pommes passten uns hervorragend ins Programm. Die gemütliche Atmosphäre mit irischer Musik lies die Zeit äusserst schnell vorbeiziehen.

    Ein kurzer Besuch in der Hotelbar mit Schlummertrunk führte dazu, dass Julie sich im Hotel verirrte und Sonja beinahe von eine Spinne gefressen wurde. Diese Nacht und ihre Träume können ja nur spannend werden …    Read more

    Cliffs and road to Galway

    April 29 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    Gestartet haben wir den Tag mit einem "Full Irish Breakfast". Danach ging es per Boot zu den Cliffs of Moher. Per Auto und zu Fuss wurden die Klippen von allen Winkeln und Ecken bestaunt!
    Als Stärkung gab es Milkshakes, Cookies und Cafés. Fotos wurden von Cornelia und Julie geschossen und Snacks wurden auf dem Weg nach Galway gegessen. "Erkundungstouren" nach Rahel-Art aber auch "mal schauen" á la Sonja durfte nicht zu kurz kommen. So ging es den ganzen Weg nach Galway, wo wir den Tag mit Cidern, Whiskey-Sour und guter Pub-Musik ausklingen liessen. 🫡Read more
