    September 27, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

TrenItalia has now run out of electricity. Seems to be a common issue down here. Only issue is 124 sweaty people in a tin can with no windows makes for an interesting atmosphere.
Journey time extended by 41 mins. Glad we have no transfers this time.

    La Spezia sehen und schmecken

    October 14, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Ach so, auf ein Schloss und vorbei an historischen Gebäuden und der Uferpromende ging es ja auch noch aber das war nur Nebensache. 😉

    Le Spezia, Italy

    April 20, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Another day that did not go as planned. We all waited for the guys who were taking photos on the gangway to finish and then we all headed out together to go to Piza to see the leaning tower. We knew we had to take the train for an hour to get there and that was about it. We got outside and talked to the information desk, they gave us a map and circled the train station which was a 25 minute walk. When we got to the train station it would have been a 40 minute wait for the train. So we looked it up online and it would have been a 25 minute walk again after the train to get to the tower. So we strapped the idea and decided to just relax in Le Spezia instead. We are all now relaxing in a Café called Tripoli with wifi and waiting on our lunch.Read more

    Cinque Terre

    November 24, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

    Last day in Riomagiorre,
We had a nice relaxing stroll around the town centre, had coffee and a look good look at Riomagiorre itself. Then Roberto, our porter came to heave our heavy suitcases, one on his shoulder and the other in his hand like it was so light, along the narrow paths, down to the paved area where he could roll the suitcases, to the train station for our journey to Bologna. Roberto told us that his grandmother had to walk to La Spezia 2 to 3 times a day with grapes in a basket on her head, when there weren't any trains at Cinque Terre. La Spezie is twice the distance of our hike to Portovenere.Read more

    La Spezía, Italy

    March 30, 2018 in Italy ⋅ 🌫 14 °C

Today was a disappointment. I had requested a tour to go to Florence which I didn’t get. So Jackson and I just went out to explore La Spezía instead. There however was nothing here. There was the beginnings of a boat show for the weekend along the harbour but everything everywhere was deserted. There wasn’t much to see, we’re just sitting in the cruise terminal using the wifi to fill in time until we start work. Coming back here I would push harder to get on the Florence tour.Read more

    Cinque Terre

    December 26, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Got up early to catch the 8:15 train from here in La Spezia to the Cinque Terre towns. We started at the one farthest north called Monterosso. We played around there a bit before jumping on the No. 2 trail to Vernazza. Ok it was pretty tough on the uphill part. It took about 2 hours but we were rewarded at the end with charm and food! I loved that the cook/owner/everything man was a native of Vernazza. He said he's one of about 350 that live there in the town. Savannah was not feeling well😔 and the rain had really started so she and Donn took the train "home.". The boys and I decided to take the train to the next town (Corniglia) and hike the 21/2 hours up up up then down down down to Manarola. We caught sunset. We are beat! No family game of spades tonight. 😀The pics say it all. The towns/hikes are even more amazing than described by books and google.Read more

    Aosta to La Spezia

    December 25, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Midnight mass last night in Aosta turned out to be a trip to a really cool cemetery instead😀 Apparently not all Catholic churches have a midnight mass. Who knew? Today started with a full Christmas breakfast at "home" then the trek to LaSpezia began. It's about a 4 hour drive. We stopped in Genoa on the way. That city is big (6th largest in Italy). We walked down narrow streets and ended in a marvelous Piazza with coffee and chocolate. I was the only one really in love with it.. apparently the narrowness of it all caused the hair on Donn and Wyatt's back to stand on end. I could only think of Sherlock Holmes and dark alleys of intrigue. The next stop was Camogli And...well.....WOW...the pics say it all. Italian Mediterranean coastal city. The newest Airbnb place is beautiful. Every Airbnb has been beyond expectations. FYI driving in Italy is challenging! Donn has used much colorful language today. We are on navigator #2. How long will she last?😀😀 Merry Christmas to all!Read more
