    We are here at the YYZ airport (Toronto Pearson) early in the morning to avoid traffic and security line up. No exceptions this time, my camera backpack is fully open and throughly checked. It is just a Normal backpack. Oh well.

    There are a couple of minor turbulences along the way, seems that the plane often shakes when I take a drink, or in the washroom. True to my previous flights, too.

    The weather was good until landing. We were greeted by pouring rain and hail after landed at Bogotá airport. The high roof of T1 had a few spots leaking, making sizeable puddles on the floor near the security checking area. The airport is clean and well organized, with easy to read and clear signs.

    BOG delayed boarding 波哥大机场推迟登机

    We have already walked through the tunnel getting to the door then stopped and requested to go back to the boarding gate. The reason? Not sure, there is no English speaking staff at the door.
    Update: 20 minutes later the boarding restarted, we have been seated without issues. The flight attendants are super friendly.

    The overnight flight was smooth and quiet. After dinner I opted out movies directly fell into sleep. Overall the 1hr15min departure delay had only resulted a 15 min behind the scheduled landing time, excellent performance. Now we are ready for the flight to USH Ushuaia.

    Morning city-view of Ushuaia is exotic, snow covered hill tops at the background make the blue sky crystal clear. Outdoor temperature is 4°C, however under the sun it fills warmer. Yesterday at the USH airport we picked up the rental pickup truck, getting ready driving to Punta Arenas, Chile 🇨🇱 today.

    This morning we are ready driving to the first stop of the pre-trip excursion, Rio Grande “(English: Big River) a city in Argentina, on the north coast of the eastern part of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. It has a population about one hundred thousand, and is the industrial capital of the Tierra del Fuego Province. It is located 212 kilometres north-east of Ushuaia.” (Ref wikipedia)

    Along National Route 3 which connecting Ushuaia to capital city, about 47 kms from Ushuaia it is the viewpoint of the Garibaldi Pass. This pass is the “is the only road pass that has managed to cross the Fuegian Andes , the southernmost and terminal portion of the extensive Andes mountain range . It is located in the Ushuaia Department , in the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands , in the south of the Argentine Republic , at the coordinates: 54°41′16″S 67°51′13″W / -54.68778, -67.85361 . It is the southernmost mountain road pass in the world.” (Ref wikipedia)

    In the afternoon we arrived at Rio Grande, a colourful city of about 100,000 population. After checking in, we rested a little while, then went out for a quick sightseeing. By the Rio Grande Waterfront of the South Atlantic Ocean, there are the Monuments of Malvinas Heroes, commemorating the fallen soldiers of the Malvinas (“Falkland” by UK) war in 1982. Kids playground is located right next to the monuments.
    The city is clean, with bi-directional traffic on wider streets and oneway traffic on narrower roads.

    Rio Grande

    On our way to Punta Arenas, my husband and I stopped at Rio Grande on the afternoon of November 23rd for a night stay. Because of the language barrier, it took us quite some time to understand the landlord's email instructions before we could even opened the locker and got the key! Then we realized it’s Sunday, so the streets were quiet and no shops nor restaurants were seen open! So I went out to try my luck and see if I could find something for dinner. Luckily, I ran into a lady walking her dog. Should I ask her? I don't know a single word of Spanish, and she couldn't say much English either. We used gestures and guessing, and finally she understood what I meant. She was so nice and volunteered to lead me to a nearby convenience store. They didn't have much, but there were enough for a dinner. Later I learned that this lady's name was Noelia, and she was a university professor. After dinner, following Noelia's suggestion, we went to the city center for a stroll, which was beautiful. I have been so grateful for her and her dog’s kindness and help.Read more

    Corss border into Chile 进入智利🇨🇱

    At San Sebastián we crossed the border from Argentina into Chile. With all the vehicle documents prepared by the car rental company border crossing was easy and smooth, less than 10 minutes on Argentine side and about 15 minutes on Chilean side.

    A few hundred meters into Chilean border is this small restaurant, clean, tidy, very well decorated. It also has rooms for those who got stuck when border closed at night.
    We bought late morning coffee and continued on.

    After getting into Chile, along Rute 257 about 170 kms west then north there is the ferry crossing continuing to Punta Arenas. It costs CLP$20,000 ($30CAD) for a passenger cars or pickups, while passengers do not count. Ferry crossing lasts about 30 minutes.

    Punta Arenas’ vibrant and exotic street view makes sharp contrast with the wilderness scenery along Ruta 257, 255 and other roads. There are many visitors (by their tough explorer dressing style) walking on the street; shopping malls are busy; coffee shops and restaurants are well seated. Similar to Ushuaia, majority of the traffic is oneway, and some wider roads are bi-directional. Streets are clean and well maintained.
    蓬塔阿雷纳斯充满活力且带有异域风情的城市街景，与沿途 257 号、255 号等公路上的荒野景色形成鲜明对比。

    With over 500 years history, monuments and sculptures scattered throughout the seaside parks and city boulevards.

    We have been here an hour ago, however seems the ferry having issue unloading due to strong wind. In another 20 minutes finally the line started moving. Shortly the ferry ⛴️ set out sailing through rough wind and waves. All were wonderfully smoothed out.

    It has been so much fun driving through Patagonian region, hilly or flat. Paved roads are well maintained. The weather kept changing almost every few turns in mountain area, and extremely windy over relatively flat or gentle rolling hills.
    穿越巴塔哥尼亚地区的自驾旅程无论是山地还是平坦地带实在充满乐趣。铺装路面养护得比较好。

    What a nice surprise! Emily recognized me at the hotel lobby when I was checking out. In my 2024 trip to Antarctica onboard Ultramarine of Quark Expedition, Emily was a member of the expedition team. She had pointed me the rare bird flew over from 4,000kms away.

    Through out this 1,320 kms self-drive excursion into
    Patagonia region, we truly enjoyed the magnificent view of the wilderness, vastness and nothingness of the Tierra del Fuego and Strait of Magellan.
    In sharp contrast, Ushuaia, Rio Grande and Punta Arenas are rich in history, vibrant and colourful. Clean streets, orderly traffic, delicious food and super friendly locals signify our wonderful experience.
    The rental vehicle also contributes to the success. It is a Nissan Frontier 4x4 pickup truck, diesel engine with manual transmission. It is rather light, shakes a lot in strong wind, but still tough as a little beast. It has enough torque to clime up steep hills often without shifting down. Just that the steering is a bit lighter than my own GMC, took me a few turns getting used to. Nowadays in North America 4x4 diesel manual transmission pickups are extremely rare. This Frontier gives me the real joy playing with the shift stick.
    在这 1,320 公里 的巴塔哥尼亚自驾旅途中，我们真正欣赏了火地岛与麦哲伦海峡那荒野、辽阔与空无 的壮丽景色。

    租来的车也为此次行程增色不少。一辆尼桑Frontier 4x4 皮卡，柴油引擎、手动挡。车身相对较轻，在强风中摇晃明显，但仍然像一只小野兽般结实耐用。扭矩充足，爬陡坡时常常不用降档。只是方向盘比我自己的 GMC 轻很多，经过几次转弯之后才适应。如今在北美，柴油 4x4 手动挡皮卡 已极为罕见，这辆 Frontier 让我重新找回了“玩变速杆”的纯粹乐趣。    Read more

    Trip starts - embarked Le Lyrial 登上星辉号

    Around 15:30 we embarked on the cruise ship Le Lyrial of Ponant. The wind on the port was so strong that I was walking tilted and still had to lean sideways against the force.
    Crew members helped taking our luggage into the cabin, and we were warmly greeted by the crew and handed a glass of champagne. Cabin size is adapt, light grey theme elegantly decorated, very well organized, and very bright.

    工作人员帮我们把行李送到客舱，并热情迎接并递上一杯香槟。
    客舱大小适中，以浅灰色为主调，装饰典雅布局合理、明亮宽敞。

    Beagle Channel 比格尔海峡

    Le Lyrial sails through Beagle Channel towards Drake Passage. The channel (Spanish: Canal del Beagle; Yahgan: Onašaga) is a strait in the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, on the extreme southern tip of South America between Chile and Argentina. The channel separates the larger main island of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego from various smaller islands including the islands of Picton, Lennox and Nueva; Navarino; Hoste; Londonderry; and Stewart. The channel's eastern area forms part of the border between Chile and Argentina and the western area is entirely within Chile. It is 240 kms long and 5 kms at its narrowest point. The channel on north end connects Strait Magellan, and the south end opens to the Drake Passage (Ref: wikipedia).
    We watched the scenery while enjoying the first dinner onboard.
    星辉号沿比格尔海峡（西班牙语：Canal del Beagle；亚甘语：Onašaga）驶向德雷克海峡。比格尔海峡位于南美洲最南端、火地群岛上的一条海峡，介于智利和阿根廷之间。该海峡将较大的火地岛大岛（Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego）与多个小岛分隔开，包括皮克顿岛、伦诺克斯岛、努埃瓦岛、纳瓦里诺岛、霍斯特岛、伦敦德里岛以及斯图尔特岛等。海峡的东段构成了智利和阿根廷的部分边界，而西段则完全属于智利。
