    The gang is back!

    19 April 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Waiting for a red-eye flight which was meant to depart at 0030hrs, it's only delayed by 30 mins, though. We are all clearly looking forward to the 8ish hour flight ahead!

  • Manila layover

    19 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

    But first, coffee... and doughnuts!

Cebu Pacific is not a great flight at all. Seats that had no recline ability, no in-flight entertainment, and they rejected our debit cards 😢

Lined up in border security line for 20 mins only to be told we had to fill out a QR code form as well. It wasn't super busy, so not so bad.

5 hours to kill , what to do 🤔

Walk to the nearest mall - they are done differently here, lots of art installations.
Capped off with some Japanese lunch, not a bad way to spend a layover 😋

  • Busuanga Airport

    19 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

A short 1 hour flight from Manila, and we touch down in our first destination, the island of Busuanga!
Lilly was not thrilled about this flight as the plane was much smaller, 2x2 seats across, and propellers instead of jet engines.
These seats also did not recline, but Jay managed a nap almost immediately.
Upon landing, the airport was bustling with locals outside trying to gwt some business taxiing passengers to their accomodations.
Luckily, we had pre-arranged transport, and Jays name was written in neat writing on a whiteboard. It would have been a very overwhelming experience trying to get a ride otherwise...

FireSky yurt glamping tent - right on the beach! So beautiful to watch the sunset from the hammock

  • Black Island

    20 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Black island was almost deserted of tourists, apart from a few boats of a couple of people and the locals.
Beautiful location, we rented a day hut for 150 pesos and paid our 200 peso each island tax and set off to find the crystal cave.

It was very cool, also deserted, and had some ladder access. See the pictures and videos. The lagoon is stunning and refreshing!

We then headed into the water for our first snorkel adventure. The reef is mostly a green colour, but there were lots of fish to look at, a few crabs, and we got stung by jellyfish 🪼

We swam around to another little beach, but on the way back, the tide came rolling in, and we really struggled to swim against the waves, but luckily, no one drowned. Jay even did a cliff jump!

Back on dry land, they had a hockey puck pool table, very fun. Also, 3 coconuts and a beer for under $5, and we were ready to head off to the next island.

  • Debotunay Island

    20 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

A short 25-minute journey across the ocean of choppy water, what was once dry was now drenched.

We pulled up to a beautiful little island beach, across the way a small fishing village with that beach covered in boats.
Here at Debotunay, there were at least 2 families worth that had come across on their 5 boats to have a picnic and sing karaoke on their portable machines.

The water is so blue just off the beach, pictures don't do it justice. This was simply an afternoon to soak in the rays, read a book (or in Esther's case, 2 books), go for a dip and unintentionally, catch a few performances of local karaoke talent.

  • Paradise

    21 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

No tours are booked today, but the roosters still woke us at 5am, so we had breakfast at 7am.
It really is a lovely spot 😍, sitting on the beach front, eating breakfast with your friends looking out at the calm waters.
As we are on the west coast of the island, the sunlight doesn't peak over the mountain until around 830, so it's quite a mild temperature at this time.

The day continued with reading books on lounge chairs, doing in the water for a dip and some Frisbee.
Before long, all this hard work had made us hungry, so we went on a hunt for some lunch at 1pm.

Our destination was closed, the next was too expensive, and they claimed to not take card payments, so we ended up in the other direction at the restaurant. we got our first dinner.
Of all the beaches and islands, we actually bunped into a semi famous person who started chatting to us. He of course as we discovered later, owned the fancy place(The Beachhouse) at the end of the beach, but he was being pretty helpful trying to come up with alternatives to get to see Coron Island. Alas, the hassle, time, and money are too much to bother.

Jess received a confirmation email for a dinner reservation at The Beachhouse for 530pm, which ironically stated it would take card payments.
It is a lovely venue, but wow, the service was something else. We were eating by no later than 830pm, that right it took almost 2.5 hours to get the food ready. We think it's possibly because they don't do food prep as they don't know how many people to expect that night, bit wow. So we got pretty tipsy with cocktails while we waited, which was also quite slow.
Admittedly, the food was well presented and mostly pretty tasty.
At the end, we were presented with a $340 bill, and the card payments would not go through...

  • Another day in paradise

    22 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

As the name suggests, another relaxing day. Mostly in part due to insufficient cash and also poor planning, but with us embarking on our next leg to El Nido, where there is going to be far more to do and see, why not enjoy the serenity and slow pace one more day?

We have our routine down now; wake up call by the roosters 🐓 at 5am, snooze until breakfast time, enjoy the view a mere few steps from our yurt, and then reading books on the lounge chairs until lunch.
As we had a terrible experience at the Beachhouse and its super overpriced, in addition to having debt collectors after us from the unpaid bill last night, we ended up back at ye ol reliable H Nice. Of course, we had an entourage of dogs at our feet and were super pleased to try the special of the day, pork burger and fries 🍟 🍔 😋

After lunch, we walked further than ever before, to the other end of the beach. We discovered a whole other world; a milk bar where we found yummy frozen treats called Ice Candy, which is basically frozen yoghurt as an icypole. Continuing on, more huts and the rest of the tourist population were down this end. And at the very end, a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the Cove (it was a tough 6 minute hill in the heat but well worth the effort)!

Later, we decided to finally use the see-through kayaks to go out to the double storey floating bamboo platoon. Jay had to walk it, though, as one of the kayaks had a crack in it, and Lilly was not even keen to try to make it, so she sat it out, and Jay walked. It was very shallow and mostly scratchy sea grass. However, then it became quite rocky and corally. The water is crystal clear, but it's still hard to navigate and easy to roll an ankle.
The platoon was pretty cool. It's also apparently a floating restaurant, but at the time, we were the only ones on there. Downstairs is a sitting booth, and some fishing equipment and upstairs is where the diving board is. This is crazy because up until about 4 metres from the platoon, it was knee-high water and then suddenly an underwater cliff down to at least 8m 😅.

After a few bombs, we decided it was time to head back before sunset, not wanting to get stuck on the water in low light. Jay was very apprehensive to swim back with the reef very sharp, so he and Jess tried to get into the kayak as a test, but it kept sinking into the water. Several attempts FAILED, and a new plan was hatched. Esther and Jess headed back while Jay stayed on the platoon watching the fish below, and Jess returned with the cracked kayak towed behind her. She took the cracked one, and they both made it back before Jess was sunk!

Dinner was at a new place we discovered on our walk and it was the type of restaurant that was again run out of someone's house, and we never knew if the food was taking a while or never coming. It was all pretty tasty regardless, and we were lucky enough to learn how dogs mate and get stuck together for a period after.

Back at the yurt, we packed and organised for the morning taxi ride... (After the platoon incident, the debt collectors came, and after 2 failed attempts with a card, we had a successful payment)!

All in all, it was a relaxing day!

  • Lio Airport and the Jeepney Ride

    23 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We had to wake up with the rossters this morning in order to catch a 550am taxi to take us to the airport for an 8am flight.

The Firesky Glamping were nice enough to prepare us breakfast the night before, and we all had chia pudding - well, Jay had 2 servings as Jess was adamant she was not hungry 😋
The 1 hour taxi ride, a strong iced coffee each, and we were ready to depart.

A very quick 23-minute flight, and we are in El Nido! Some might say it was a rather Swift flight ✈️ 😉

Marco picked us up in his "Jeep," but it was, in fact, a Jeepney!! We are all about the experiences here 🙌.

  • Sampaguita Villas and El Nido town

    23 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

Wow, we really found ourselves some nice accommodation! We were a bit apprehensive at first when we took a back road up over a mountain to come at it from the back. It seemed like it was quite in the jungle. But after exploring a little, we are a short 2 minute walk from a beach and a 13 minute walk from El Nido town. On top of that the place is very nice 👌.

We had a brief relaxer before heading out into town to find some breakfast/ brunch at a place called Brunch via some much needed cash withdrawal! The food was delish, and the majority of us ordered the same dish - savoury waffles!

Taking in some of the sites, the girls decided we were getting a massage, so that was an hour of the day. On our way back, we stopped off and got some snack supplies before having a couple hours of more reading of books.

We hit the town at around 7 pm and found some 2 4 1 cocktails and a pool table. The food was a BBQ assortment and very tasty! We tipsily made our way back to the accommodation to sleep before our upcoming tour day!

  • Entalula Island- stop 1

    24 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today, we organised a private boating tour to go around the islands, tours A and B.
After a 40-minute boat ride across the mostly ca waters, we arrive at stop 1 on our private boat tour. We pulled up to the beach, and there were 2 other boats already here. Most of the boats we have seen on the way have around 2-3 tourists on them max, so they also must be private tours.

The water was crystal clear and infested with jellyfish 🪼 of the red variety. We saw a few fish, but for the most part, the coral here is the same as the previous we had seen. Maybe blanching has happened a lot here, too. We felt some minor stings from things we couldn't quite see but nothing too serious.

We saw a young, maybe 30s, guy getting literally carried over someone's shoulder, and he was crying, we thought maybe he had been stung, but our tour guide said he actually had chest pain/ heart problems so they were taking him to the nearest clinic.

Our stop time here was 30 minutes.

But this marks our first straight off the boat snorkel experience with no shallow areas to stand. No injuries or losses here...Baca lagi

  • Shimizu Island & Twin lagoons - stop 3/4

    24 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

We arrived at a small beach for lunch, only 1 other boat was here and that had 2 people on it. The spread they had prepared for us was huge, and sooo yum!

While we were enjoying the serenity and the food, another tour boat, nay, a boat load of people arrived, easily 30 people piled off the boat and overtook our small space to set up their lunch. Within 15 minutes, there were another 3 or 4 boats in the same spot for lunch... we promptly finished our meal and headed back to the boat to be told we were walking 5 mins around the corner to see the twin lagoons - also because we were blocked in by the other boats.

The Lagoons were beautiful, we entered through a small entrance that during high tide would require us to snorkel up and dive underwater to enter - however this was low tide so we squeezed through, the only obstacles being the sharp rocks and the occasional holes in the ground. We took some photos in this small area that had rocks sides towering above us. Our guide was getting really into filming videos of us on the DJI.

Then we thought it would be a great idea to go out a different exit, another small opening that took us out of the lagoon and into open waters. Our guide seemed pretty happy with the little detour, and we all just assumed it would be a short trip around, given that the lagoon was so small.
Well, it happened again! It was going fine for a couple of minutes; we were enjoying the reefs and fish below, and suddenly, there was just depth and nowhere to stand on. While it was mostly fine, it became difficult again when we got to the unprotected area and the water became more choppy. 4 of us made it around the bend and were standing when we noticed Esther was still missing, and we couldn't quite see her. She wasn't wearing a life jacket this time, and she came around the corner, and we could tell she was struggling.
Jess leapt into life saver mode and swam back across the inlet to help her. Before long, we could see them holding on to the overhang of rocks. Our guide took Lillys vest and swam over to give it to her. A troubling ordeal, but she made it. We then discovered she had been biting down so hard on her snorkel that she had almost ripped part of it off.

The other lagoon was meh, murkier water and not as nice. We then headed back to the boat 🚢.

  • Miniloc Island - Big Lagoon - Stop 5

    24 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

A short trip, and we were at the kayak part of the tour. Big lagoon, for some reason, required kayak/canoes. We had 1 included with the tour, and we had to rent another for 350 ₽.
It was basically a spot that had 4 companies that did the canoe rental, and the small beach was apparently owned by a rich person and was private/ off-limits. But it was a super popular spot also and was very crowded.

There was a water passage that was low tide and walkable. Jay got out and pushed Esther in the kayak, then lilly and Jess caught up, so they also got pushed.
The passage led to a rather large lagoon, and it was HOT. With no wind to cool you getting in the water was the only way to cool off. We parked up in a shady spot and hot into the water. It was lovely until it wasn't. The water settled, and we discovered that there were many sea urchins close by, something kept grazing our legs, and we swear there was a giant octopus just chilling nearby 🐙.
Safe to say, we all managed to get back to the canoes ASAP!

All in all, it was an ok lagoon experience.

This had to be one of the favourite spots! Literally a minute away from the big lagoon was our final destination, our last snorkelling experience of the day, again off the boat into some deep, beautiful waters.

There were a multitude of different species, colours, schools, and terrain. It was like a mini highway. The more you stared, the more you noticed.
We probably spent around 45 mins here and decided to cap it all off with some beers to celebrate a fantastic day!

The trip back was uneventful, and we were all pretty tired.

    24 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

We arrived back to El Nido at around 430pm, pretty exhausted we walked back to the accommodation and just had an hour of doing nothing.
We decided to try a Mexican place for dinner, which was very tasty apart from the disappointing nachos that looked nothing like the pictures suggested. Quesidillas and tacos were the highlight and a controversial cocktail Jay got, which was Basil based. The writer is of the opinion it was delicious 😋.

We popped next door for a massage. Esther and Lilly decided they needed an Aloe Vera massage, Jess, a hardcore Swedish massage, and Jay got a foot scrub and massage (agony for a ticklish person, and he's pretty sure he has friction burn in some places)!

  • It started with rain...

    25 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Today's original plan was to get up early, head out for breakfast, and then on to a canopy tour before it gets too hot. However, the weather had other ideas. We woke to some heavy rain fall that lasted around 20 minutes, which was lovely to watch and smell.

As it had decided to rain, we left the house much later than expected and thus decided it would be too wet and hot to do it today. As expected, the rainfall made it so humid! It must have been 80% humidity today. I think we were all more drenched than we had ever been.

We got breakfast at a hostel that looked pretty bust, only to discover that it was the organising of a huge tour group. Regardless, we had our breakfast and decided to mission back to the house as Marco had said we could use the pool at the other villa while there were no guests staying up there today.

Our afternoon consisted of lounging around the pool and reading. A late lunch back in town, which was not super tasty but looked fancy, and then on to some exporing shops and roads untravelled yet. Bought some cold coconuts had a beer, missioned back to the accommodation for a refresh, and then decided it was all too hard to head back to town as we were all knackered.

The compromise was a little close by outdoor family business out of their house, which had great reviews - Mia's Bistro. It lived up to the name and was very tasty.

  • Activities, Poolside and Gambling

    26 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

It was difficult to wake up this morning, but we rallied and headed out by 830am.
Our breakfast was consumed at a restaurant that was a collective with an art studio above. The place was not very busy at all, and we were able to enjoy a delicious breakfast of waffles and rosemary toast while watching Ultimate Beastmaster on Netflix.

Next at the Canyon Walk, with Jay being nervous about what to expect, imagining a high ropes course type scenario as a worst case that is suspended in the canyon. When in reality it was really easy and not scary in the slightest. We got some great views and plenty of pictures with a bonus of the Dreamcatcher route back down (that we paid for).

The villa above us was still not guested, so we were able to make use of the pool again for the afternoon.

Dinner was taken back in town, at The Food truck - which was Thai cuisine and delicious. Once again, Jay fell for the trap of wanting to order something and only being told - "Sorry sir that is not available", 😪 - why can't they tell you what is not available before letting you order?!

Post dinner, we found an interesting gambling area and decided to partake. Turns out Jay and Lilly are keen gamblers but responsibly bailed out when we stopped breaking even.

We finally bought some waterproof bags, Lilly and Jess got more massages, Jay and Esther found a Ukrainian bar that made craft beer, and we all reunited to walk back home whilst booking a tour for tomorrow 🧜‍♀️🧜‍♂️

  • Helicopter Island - Stop 1

    27 April 2024, Filipina ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

"Begin your journey at the stunning Helicopter Island, known for its unique limestone formations that resemble a helicopter from a distance. Dive into the turquoise waters and be mesmerized by the vibrant marine life."

Aka Chicken Drumstick, AKA Alligator Island - named so for the shape of the island at a certain angle. It was a 25-minute boat ride to this beach.

It had a pretty beach, but the snorkelling, hate to say it, was quite boring. The coral was all dull coloured, and there weren't many fish around. There was a school of what looks like a smaller version of a swordfish that was quite near the surface. Esther saw some interesting fish with a hood of some description, and there were a couple of jellyfish around.

The guide of the day, Daniel, gave a speil about not touching the coral as its alive and to watch out for; box jellyfish, stonefish, sea urchin, sea snakes and more (Australia has some competition) during the days adventures.

  • (Not so) Secret Beach - Stop 2

"Step into another world at the Secret Beach, accessible only through a small gap in the rocks. Here, you'll find a secluded stretch of shoreline and serene waters that invite you to relax and unwind."

What would probably be a really cool area is littered with tourists. There was almost a scum in the water, potentially from lots of sunscreen, but it made the water pretty unclear.
Enough of the negatives now on to the positives.

It was a deep drop-off point. A few schools of fish surrounded the area, and a huge one of potentially sardines?
The Cove opens up from a relatively sized entrance way that has high walls and a small beach at the back. It's a pretty spot except for the negatives mentioned earlier.

We stopped here for lunch, the same spread as earlier, but as Esther had gotten sick the last time and she suspected a rogue prawn, we were weary to eat the chicken or prawns.

The spot was an abandoned shrine that used to be home to nuns of a Catholic church. There were many statues to honour religious icons.
The temple was very run down and unsafe to enter. Daniel stated that they were starting renovations on it this year to restore it.

  • Hidden Beach - Stop 5

"Discover the elusive beauty of Hidden Beach, nestled within a dramatic limestone cove. Reach this secret haven through a small crevice during low tide, where you'll find crystal-clear waters and a tranquil, hidden paradise."

    Our final tour destination.

An almost, not really, very hidden Beach. Shallow waters lead down a channel of precarious snorkelling. It's more about the journey to snorkel to the beach because there are a few things to see. Of note, Jess had a fight with a fish who was guarding its territory and nibbled her ankle on her way past it, there were a few small families of clown fish, Jess swears she saw a small orange octopus 🐙, Jay saw a small lobster 🦞 (no one can corroborate his story), there were sea snake plants, a scary looking spiky coral coloured fish that looked like a night club bouncer, and some weird gelatinous looking things on the sea floor.

Lots of people yelling, laughing, screaming, and most of all, walking around churning up all the dirt, which made it very murky 😔.

Our first destination, Nacpan Beach. Famous as one of the nicest stretches of beach around, white sand, some restaurants and a few fancy accomodations.
Only 1 place was serving breakfast, it was already hot, the sand burned, and there were so many jellyfish type creatures in the sea - luckily we found that they did not sting, but they were very weird when it brushed past a body part.
We spent 4 hours here, eating, lounging in the sea, reading books under a palm tree and Jay did a great job of getting a burnt back 👍.
