  • Vök Baths

    3 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Finishing up the day with a stop at Vök Baths, a geothermal baths that has pools that float on the river Urriðavatn.

The baths had 3 pools of varying temperatures from 36* to 41* and then a number of ladders to the lake (Urriðavatn) which was Baltic (though we were told it was 10*, I can confirm it was LOADS colder).

After we got out we had a warm tea in the cafe and then set off for our hotel for the night.

  • Höfn

    4 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

After driving over 3 hours this is the first town with a come across, pronounced ‘Hup’ with a hiccup it was what we’ve come to expect from these small but picturesque Icelandic villages a Nettó, coffee shop, guesthouses and a pool, oh and 3 MASSIVE glaciers in the mountains behind the town.En savoir plus

  • Hoffellsfjöll Glacier

    4 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

Getting our fill of glaciers today with a stop at Hoffellsfjöll Glacier. The walk from the car park to the glacier was 4KM but my god it was windiest walk I have ever done, even with my hood up, sunglasses and three layers I was frozen, we were totally wind burnt by the end.

But after walking for 40 minutes we were met with the glacier, and it was absolutely stunning. The glacier begins in the heights of the mountain and freezes in a flow as it comes down to the lake at the bottom, so even though the ice looks still it is slowly moving down the mountain. But equally these glaciers are rescinding due to global warming.

  • Jökulsárlón Lagoon | Black Diamond Beach

    5 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

First stop of the day is Jökulsárlón Lagoon, this new lagoon (only 80 years old) was really impressive as you can get really close to it. Opposite the lagoon is the black diamond beach, it gets its name from the ice that breaks from the glacier in the lagoon and makes its way under the bridge and into the Atlantic with some of it landing on the beach. Once there is scatters the beach looking like diamonds and broken glass.

While there we saw plenty of wildlife including seals, birds and Americans, one of which said “these icebergs (more like cubes) are like the ones that hit the titanic.

  • 🌊 Svartifoss

    5 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Moving on we visited Svartifoss waterfall set in the Skaftafell National Park. The waterfall reminded me of the giants causeway with huge towers hexagon cubes almost suspended in the air and the waterfall cascading down the middle.

It really was a beautiful waterfall and probably one of the most elegant of the trip so far.

  • Vík!

    5 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Quick pit stop in Vík for lunch. The guidebook said it was booming town which is heaving and loud during the summer, however, this couldn’t have been any further from the truth. It was VERY quiet and the busiest part was the supermarket 😂.

However, Vík did have a beautiful church which was set above the ground, a black sand beach and a rock formation just off the cast. This rock formation has a legend behind it, which is that it is 4 frozen trolls who attempted to steal a boat in a storm. Well sadly for us after seeing this a heavy rain cloud moved in and we had to seek sanctuary in the supermarket.

  • Skógafoss

    5 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

One of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland Skógafoss was a world away from the secluded off the beaten track waterfalls of Northern Iceland! Set in the middle of a campsite this amazing waterfall was one of the most impressive we had seen, purely because of how high it was and how close you could get to it.

The video doesn’t do it justice but it was such an amazing sight!

  • Seljalandsfoss

    5 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Final stop of the day is Seljalandsfoss, one of the few waterfalls in Iceland that you can safely walk behind it. However, what they don’t warn you for is the spray from the waterfall means you get absolutely soaked!! The last picture is Greg running under the waterfall trying to escape 😂😂. It was hilarious to watch.

I think the funniest moment was seeing two American who had worn their Sunday best and got absolutely soaked.

  • Tents for the night 🏕️

    5 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Tonight’s overnight halt is in glamping tents with an uninterrupted view of Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which last erupted in 2010 shutting much of Europe’s airspace.

It was a cold night but luckily the tent had a heater, electric blankets, hot drinks and easy access to the showers.En savoir plus

  • Selfoss

    6 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

First stop of the day is Selfoss, a bustling town on the golden circle, yes after so many days in the north and east of the country we are now firmly back in the more touristy parts of Iceland 🇮🇸.

I think the most surprising thing about Selfoss was that the Sun was shining!!!! For the first day since we got here we were able to walk around in just jumpers, it was lovely!

  • 🌋 Kerið

    6 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Next stop is an extinct volcano called “Kerið”. In the picture you can see what remains of this cone shaped volcano, which erupted 800 years (or more) ago and after doing so collapsed in on itself.

What is left is the banks of the volcano, and a natural lake in the middle. We hiked around the outside of the volcano and then around the other craters that could be spotted around the site and then came back to the car.

  • Hrunalaug

    6 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Nestled in the hills was Hrunalaug Thermal Baths, instead of the others which are normally capped and then diverted to fill man made pools. This one was totally natural, and was amazing, with uninterrupted views out of the rolling grassy hills.

Changing took place in an old shed that was originally built to clean cattle, and then you walked round to get into the pools!

Overall it was a great experience.

  • Geysir

    6 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Final stop today is ‘The Great Geysir’ sadly the most famous one has not been active since 2016, the geysir that we saw was Strokkur, this geysir erupts every 3-6 minutes of varying heights and sizes but no where on the scale of ‘The Great Geysir’.

I think out of everything I’ve seen so far on this trip this has by far been the best thing I’ve seen, it was absolutely beautiful, stunning and just bizarre!

  • Þingvellir National Park

    7 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

First stop on our final day road tripping Iceland- before we arrive in Reykjavik- is Þingvellir National Park, and despite all the beauty we have seen this is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reason is that when Iceland was being settled during the Norse period (around 930AD), over thirty ruling chiefs met here for the first time to discuss law on the island and to create a commonwealth. The chiefs in meeting created the Althingi system of governance which was in effect a de-facto parliament. This makes Þingvellir the original site of the world’s longest running, still ongoing parliament. This was the site in the photographs with the flag pole, it is called “Law Rock” and has since been used for many different Icelandic events such as when they became independent after WW2 and other significant events.

More interesting is that the national park sits between two tectonic plates, with Iceland being the only place in the world where this rift is above sea-level. In the photographs you can see that after we parked the car we went down into a valley, it is here that you can clearly see the North American plate towering above you and the Öxaráfoss waterfall cascading over the side of it.

  • Blue Lagoon

    7 juillet 2023, Islande ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Ending the day and our road trip with a stop at Blue Lagoon, a site that is filled with minerals, this is because the saltwater comes from 2000 metres below the ground and is heated to over 2000* before rising through the ground and being saturated in rich minerals. It then arrives at the surface at around 38* and is then pumped into the lagoon. Signs say that the entire lagoon is replenished with fresh water every 40 hours.

We had a great time floating round, relaxing, enjoying the sauna, steam baths, cold water showers and most of all the face masks. I don’t know why but some people decided to plaster their entire faces, heads, shoulders and backs with it. So many of them looked like the Michelin Man.

Either way it is difficult to look cool when your face is caked in white glue.
