Our guide takes us to the Bier Oktoberfest Museum, off the beaten track through a maze of alleyways. It tells the history of beer and the Munich Oktoberfest.
The museum was opened on 7 September 2005 and is housed in an old town house in the old town built in the year 1327. The building is accessed inside through a staircase, which is nearly 500 years-old, it has 43 steps and extends over four floors.
The original door is shown on the left of the photo and the new entry is much larger.

  • Hofbrauhaus

    15 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

No trip to Munich would be complete without going to the Hofbrauhaus, the most famous beer hall in Munich. Hofbrauhaus means the Brewing House of the Royals. It has been on this site, brewing beer since 1589. It was almost totally destroyed in WW2 but has been rebuilt. Inside it is very noisy and smells of beer even at 11am - and it is packed!
Beer in Germany must be brewed under the German Beer Purity Law. This has been in operation since 1516 and has only been amended once since that time. All German beer can only contain 4 ingredients - barley, hops, yeast and water.

  • Opera House & Royal Residence

    15 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The National Theatre on Max Josef Platz is a historic opera house, home of the Bavarian State Opera, Bavarian State Orchestra and the Bavarian State Ballet.
The Residenz is the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria. The Residenz is the largest city palace in Germany and is open to visitors for its architecture, room decorations, and displays from the former royal collections. The complex of buildings contains ten courtyards and displays 130 rooms. The courtyard is a particularly peaceful area. In one particular corner, I spy some very unusual tiny gargoyles.Meer informatie

  • Hofgarten, Munich

    15 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Continuing on our own we walk through the Hofgarten, the Royal Gardens. It was built between 1613-17. In the center of the garden is a pavilion for the goddess Diana, built in 1615. The garden was destroyed during WW2, and was rebuilt with a partial redesign which compromised between the landscape garden character it had acquired in the 19th century and the original formal design of the 17th century. It's so pretty.Meer informatie

  • Englischer Garten

    15 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We continue walking through the Englischer Garten , a large public park reminiscent of Central Park in NYC. It was created in 1789. As we walk along the shady paths we see the Monopteros (Apollo Temple) in the distance; we follow the Eisbach (stream) through the park past many ponds and man-made waterfalls.
We end our very long walking day with a great lunch in a courtyard restaurant just behind the Neues Rathaus.

  • Surfing in the Englischer Garten

    15 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

In one of the artificial streams flowing through the Englischer Garten, there is a standing wave produced by change of water flow. Surfers line up along the bank taking turns entering the water with their boards. After a minute or so, successful surfers will voluntarily drop out returning to the end of the line allowing the next person in line an opportunity. The signage states that surfing should only be done by expert or skilled surfers.Meer informatie

  • Deutsches Museum, Munich

    16 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The Deutsches Museum (built in 1903) is located on a small island on the Isar River & is just one stop away from Central Munich and Marienplatz. This huge building, the largest museum of its kind, is given over to all things technological & scientific. It's a fascinating place with thousands of exhibits. As there are no shops open on Sundays, the museums and open spaces are all very busy with families.Meer informatie

  • Deutsches Museum : Marine Navigation

    16 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Here in this hall, the prime exhibit is the 1880's fishing vessel, the Maria, which remained in service til the 1950's.
There's a cool collection of kayaks and canoes and a Portuguese fishing boat.
The round ring, with pants attached, is hooked onto ropes (like a flying fox) to rescue people safely from a sinking ship.
There's also a U1 Submarine built in 1906, Germany's first submarine. Its hull has been cut to display the vessel like a cross section. Very interesting.

  • Frauenkirche - the Church of Our Lady

    17 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

This Roman Catholic Church is seen as the Munich Dom (Cathedral). First started in the 12th century; it was consecrated in 1494. It's twin onion-dome towers mostly survived the bombings during WW2 because they were used as landmarks by the allied bombers. The roof fell in and was reduced to rubble. Restoration was completed in 2004. The plaque to Pope Benedict XVI is because he had earlier been the Archbishop of Munich. The exterior walls are inlaid with tombstones recovered during restoration. Almost all churches in Munich have these on their walls in remembrance of the graveyards that used to stand beside the churches.Meer informatie

  • Augustiner Brauhaus

    17 september 2018, Duitsland ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Two visits to the Augustiner Brauhaus - coffee at noon and lunch around 3pm. The Augustiner Brewery was founded in 1328. They are one of the big 6 Munich brewers under the Beer Purity Law. The fruit photo is of the Physalis. I had this for dessert with lemon sorbet - it's similar to a tomato and is often called a ground cherry or Cape Gooseberry (but is not a true gooseberry). The horses towing the old brew kegs are here for the Oktoberfest celebrations.Meer informatie
