    This 14-15th century church is known as the Bulgarian Sistine Chapel. It was built in 3 stages with 3 distinct adjoining areas. Only natural materials have been used to make the colours of the frescoes. The coloured dust plus egg are combined to make the paint durable and waterproof.     The Konstantsalieva House in Arbanasi has been preserved as an ethnological museum of the mid 17th century. The original house has been restored and contains furnishings and belongings of the era.

    A four course, Bulgarian lunch with folkloric song and dance. Menu was a salad with flat bread, tomato vegetable soup, deconstructed cabbage rolls and a type of baklava.
    With no newspapers in the village, important notices (like deaths/births etc) are placed on the front gates.Read more

    This mediaeval town has a 13-14th century fortress guarding a narrow valley which linked Eastern Europe with the Middle East. The Tsarevets Fortress was built between 1185-1393 and housed the royal palaces. It was the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and has many famous palaces. During the Middle Ages, the town was a main European centre of culture giving its name to art and literature.

    Veliko Tarnovo is built along the steep valley slopes. The town now attracts many visitors because of its unique architecture.

  • Belogradchik Rocks and Fortress.

    High up above the town, among the strange, red-hued cliffs and massifs, lies the fortress guarding the strategic valley pass below. Originally built in 1-3AD as a small fortress/rampart, it was conquered by the Ottomans and partially destroyed. Reconstruction took place in the early 19th century.
    Over millennia, the sandstone has been weathered and eroded into unique rock formations which are a great natural wonder. The way to the fort is cobbled and steep with uneven rock steps.

    The Iron Gate Lock 1 is part of a huge hydroelectric power station. We go through the lock in 2 stages and takes about an hour to get thru. Another cruise ship shares the lock.

    Sailing day through one of Europe’s most dramatic natural wonders. The spectacular narrow gorges slice through the Carpathian Mountains to the north and the Balkans to the south. The Iron Gate Dam was built in 1972 and impacted the ecology on either side of the river. Still there is an abundance of biodiversity - perch, catfish, sturgeon and salmon are found in the water. Lynx, bears, wolves and jackals can be found on land. The towering white cliffs are made of limestone and draped with forest.Read more

    The Serbian Capital, Belgrade’s name, means “white city” and refers to the massive fortress above the confluence of the Danube and Sava Rivers. Belgrade is a mix of neoclassical architecture, baroque mansions, Ottoman mosques, Turkish inns and Soviet apartment blocks. The old city is located high on one the nine hills which make up Belgrade. The new town is on the flat land near the Danube and is the centre for finance and business. Architecture is modern.Read more
