    Waikiki HI

    October 21, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

In October 2016, two of my nieces flew up from NZ and OZ to celebrate their birthday month and invited me to stay with them in the AirBnB they had rented. I decided to stay in an IHA hostel near the beach instead, but we packed in a lot of adventures together.

I don't seem to have saved the photos that were on my Samsung camera phone, so I have just a few taken with my Blackberry, which I usually had with me when I walked around the neighborhood.

The plane I took from Oakland was on its maiden flight for the new livery commissioned by Disney to promote the movie Moana, which was going to open on Thanksgiving weekend.

The morning after I arrived, I got up bright and early to walk the two blocks to the beach, and later met with my oldest niece, whose birthday was that day, and my other niece and her husband and daughter for a birthday lunch in a beachside restaurant.

  • Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head

    October 24, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

One of the places we visited was the USS Arizona Memorial and other WWII sites around Pearl Harbor. Naturally, I had my Rosie the Riveter water bottle with me!

The next day, we went to Diamond Head, where I met up with a friend from Oakland who was also visiting Honolulu. I didn't climb to the summit, but they all did. However, I did walk up to the caldera from the road below and got a great shot of a couple taking a photo looking out over the channel that separates Oahu from Molokai.

On my way back to the hostel, I stopped at a Zippy's for lunch, and on my evening walk spotted this great cut out of Elvis outside a pizza bar near the hostel.

  • Tour buses galore!

    October 26, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The street running parallel to the one the hostel was on, one block towards the beach, ran past the back entrance of a major tourist hotel--a Hilton, I think. So it was always crowded with tour buses picking up guests. I liked that one tour company was named after me. And me.

A nearby hotel always had great musical guests, and the hole-in-the-wall eatery at one end of the short street the hostel was on served excellent food in modest surroundings.
